Extremely interesting blog post from my friend, Scott Fletcher, regarding some of the things we 30-somethings ponder from time to time. I know there are quite a few of you that will benefit from the reading of this:
My old online name has been “AVnerd” since my dial-up bulletin board system (BBS) days in 1985. It’s hard to believe that I have used that name online for over 20 years, and now think that I have outgrown it. Its even harder to believe that I’m using the term “outgrown it” while considering replacing it. If I had truly outgrown it, I would just quit playing these stupid online games and start acting like an adult.
The whole thing. (Great stuff, Scott.)

As long as he leaves Lifeisaglitch alone
I’ve been using the nick LaVaGoD since Quake 1 and I’m shocked that I really never had a problem getting it on most online services.
Before Quake I used dumb names like STmark (Back in the Sierra Network days).
Ah, your lucky then, in most cases Coconut is taken, so I use hafta use Coconutsu, or other names derivative of the fruit/nut thing.
Growing up is for boring people… Pwninstein for life!
Ah yes, the Pong generation.
“AVnerd” makes me think of the “Angry Videogame Nerd.”
I can’t even remember the usernames I used back in the BBS days… weird since that was something that I did every day. Scott, do you remember the old local (Utah) BBS ‘Lower Lights’. Over 100 lines of chat. To a kid in middle school, it was the greatest… I would assume it’s much like the texting of today.
Let’s see…
Knyght – ’81-’85
Errant Knyght – ’86-’97
EK – ’98-’99
Eeek_the_Kat – ’00-Present
My online life in four lines.
I think he should call himself P-Fletchy
Not to be mean to say anything about Scott…. but most people Ive known and myself trasnlate “AV” as Adult Video~~~~ just saying….. Maybe changing the nick wouldnt be bad. I remeber when I “retired” my old online nick, and Iam only 24!
If you look up the old RealToons Scott used to do, you’ll notice they’re signed with
Scott ‘BP’ Johnson.
What’s BP stand for, Scott, and what ever happened to it?
I’m getting tired of the correlation between video gaming and adolescence. I wish we’d get past that as a society.
That said, I’ve used this moniker since 1995. I have thought about changing it a few times. Not because I feel that I’ve “outgrown” it but because I think it would be interesting to try changing it after all this time. It would be hard to adjust, though, so I don’t.
That would be “BuddyPickle” Steven … (sjees. .. the kind of stuff one learns on the internet and still remembers after years … it never ceases to amaze me)

Speaking of nicknames … I’ve been JaFO since I got on-line. The only change was the addition of Dutch as JaFO was already taken. And the origin ? It’s mentioned in the movie ‘Blue Thunder’ and it kind of stuck.
While I don’t use it on here (due to branding purposes
), I have used the name online name bombtrak since about 1992 or so. I had to come up with an 8 character name, so I grabbed a music magazine and flipped through until I ran into a review of RATM’s first album. I plucked the song title Bombtrack, dropped the ‘c’ and never looked back.
I’ve used that name on many a game and website.
I read this book back in the day by Samuel R Delany called Dhalgren. It’s a trippy book, but I’ve always thought the name was cool. So, when I can get it, I use Dhalgren. I don’t always get it first, though
