That is f’n awesome. That’s something I should absolutely not have on my phone, but I have to have it. Is that actually coming out? My girlfriend will “accidently” drop my iPhone out the car window.
What’s the issue? Your girlfriend drags you shopping, goes off to buy shoes. At least you can check your AH or Post or run around on your lunchbreak getting some stuff for tonights raid.
Secondly, the frame rate is way too high for the power of the iPhone. The graphics quality (from what I could tell) seemed to be a bit high. That’s quite a high view distance in Mulgore.
Looked like he fired off a lightning spell (I’ve not played shammies ) without even touching the screen (the second time), and the first one he seemed to touch the melee attack.
I doubt blizzard will allow it… I mean, maybe it’ll show up for ones that have been Jail Broken, but they’re not going to allow them to do this, when they could make so much money from this themselves.
I think that blizzard will almost definately come out with their own version of this… Just because they can. and what a perfect platform!
Anyone consider that maybe Blizzard has a hand in this as well? Or if it’s given away for free, would Blizzard even care? My initial question was whether it’s against the EULA to modify a client enough to run on the phone. It’s awesome to see something like this on the iPhone, even just as proof of how far technology has come. I remember my first cell phone, green and black screen, no downloadable ring tones or backgrounds, hell, there wasn’t even text messaging.
The game is hosted elsewhere and streamed. The youtube post, not by the author, erroneously states that it’s running on the iPhone but if you take a few minutes to google Vollee you’ll find information about what they do. Stream hosted games to 3G portables. That explains the deep view distance. It explains high texture detail. It explains the choppy framerate. Most of their work was obviously in the interface coding and the layer of gesture interpretation translated into WoW interface commands.
Not exactly mind blowing stuff. I was a lot more impressed by someone’s homebrew adaptation of the Wii controller but this is more practical for just wanting to check the AH or send messages to guildies, since Blizz still doesn’t have any form of IM client that bridges the gap from the game world to the rest of the world (which is likely a good thing, from a spam and exploit standpoint).
I’d like to also point out that he’s connected to a wireless network, not running this off of a 3G or EDGE internet connection. This isn’t that impressive, considering that it means no WoW on say, the bus. Or at the very best a horribly unplayable WoW.
@Coldarm: He hit both the attack and lightning bolt buttons at the same time. During the second lightning attack, the button was out of camera, so he could have hit it without us seeing it.
As for this being feasible for players, it would probably be a lv 1-15, bank, AH, and traveling type function. As you pass level 20, the number of abilities you get would be far too many to handle on the iphone. Maybe fishing, mining, and herb gathering too.
Hmph. Looks like Wow:Postage-stamp slideshow edition to me. It’s sort of impressive in its own way, but it doesn’t really seem to be anything to get overexcited about.
@ Sensei Szota Spell check dude, or at least make an attempt to use the full keyboard that you have at your disposal, Enough with the texting shorthand!, Seriously, I had to read that note 3 times before I realized what you were trying to say.
Blizzard could not care less about them running on the IPhone. It’s your account, they don’t care if you run it on a Mac or PC. Now I would not want too run an instance on it, but for checking your auctions at work or in line at DMV, no problem at all.
“And there you have it. My first reaction is to flail my arms around and scream “WAKE UP SHEEPLE” when asked about its authenticity, but there are factors that point to its possible validity. The first is that Vollee has already been contracted to port Second Life to the iPhone; the second is that Vollee had previously announced a partnership with Activision; the third is that Vollee had also indicated that they’d be working on the iPhone.”
I’m pretty sure it’s not meant to be for raiding and PvP… It’s just supposed to be able to perform the basic functions of WoW… I’m sure those high-end players would be willing to sacrifice their add-ons on the iPhone to be able to access the AH…
Quote Bloodharpon: As you pass level 20, the number of abilities you get would be far too many to handle on the iphone.
I don’t think thats really a concern unless your raiding or pvping, which i dont think is a smart thing to do on an iphone. I’m a hunter and i really dont use more than a few abilities: hunters mark, serpent sting and arcane shot and steady shot, the occasional volley and concussive shot. What really worries me is, what will they do with hunters and locks? how will they do the pets? because i really think i use more abillities on my pet than i do my actual hunter. (btw i’m only lvl 52 so i don’t really need that large range of abilities)

The framerate is more indicative of the bandwidth necessary to stream to the iPhone and the feedback loop. It wouldn’t matter where you were or what was onscreen from the iPhone’s perspective this is being handled by a remote host. The iPhone is not really having to work that hard at all. The remote host could likely run at far lower settings than what most players operated at anticipating the result being scaled down to such a small image.
People are completely missing the point when they fixate on the framerate. Completely.
Even if it played, would anyone get something productive done? Maybe fishing in some backwater…
Better for Blizzard to give us a “low-fi” option for walking through high lag/latency/population areas so that the game does not stutter. ie. Whenever in a “rest” area the game dynamically drops spell details, character skin, animations down to a really gimped level. That way we can move through high pop areas without delay.
I know of people on 56k (poor souls) or throttled bandwidth who can’t log in to Dalaran; without an immediate disconnect. Imagine how piss poor this handheld version would be in the same.
Thats Nuts!
That’s both, an incredible achievement and the worst, laggiest way of playing Wow imaginable.
if all u cud use it for was cheking AH, it wud be so worth the lag.
That is f’n awesome. That’s something I should absolutely not have on my phone, but I have to have it. Is that actually coming out? My girlfriend will “accidently” drop my iPhone out the car window.
Questionable if you can’t stop playing a game for some hours…
What’s the issue? Your girlfriend drags you shopping, goes off to buy shoes. At least you can check your AH or Post or run around on your lunchbreak getting some stuff for tonights raid.
I think it’s pretty damn cool. GIEF PLX!
confused
or do you load the massive wow folder onto your phone?
perhaps it piggy backs off the version on your main machine
but i agree, being able to manage the AH when out and about would be cool, or even just lurking in the game seeing what is going on etc
Seems pretty fake to me.
For a start, Blizz are unlikey to allow it.

Did I mention I don’t believe it?
@Coldalarm
Why would Blizzard not allow it? They are proprietary? They have the authenticator on teh iPhone…why not?

If that is real , there goes my marriage, my job, my friends…..

I forsee a whole new type of Warcraft tournament gaming in the making…
Mind blown.

being able to play WoW while out and about just might be enough to get me started in the game again. I hope this is available on other phones.
Soooooo, its like onlive for your ipod? sounds cool, vollees site is down right now so i cant find out how much it cost or anything >:(
lol, Scott Digged a website, without Digg. All the Instance WoWers stampeded (not sure if thats correct) over to Vollee and crashed it. HA!
rofl, probably

O…M…G… FREAKIN awesome dude
Where do we get this and how much does it cost? Those are the two most important questions in my life until I can get this.
Lets see him run around Dalaran on that thing. My own system can bearly handle Dalaran on a heavy night.
Hmph. Looks like Wow:Postage-stamp slideshow edition to me. It’s sort of impressive in its own way, but it doesn’t really seem to be anything to get overexcited about.

First Peggle and now this…I am doomed.
Just seems really impracticable only because most high end players go ape s with all the add-on they require to play the game

What? That framerate would drive me insane.
It would be like using this!:

Put me in with “I don’t buy it.”
If this was a legit blizz development, I think they would be trumpeting it from the top of the world…of warcraft…(.com).
I don’t believe it, personally.
I could be wrong. Still calling “hoax” on this until Blizz legitimizes this.
Even if it played, would anyone get something productive done? Maybe fishing in some backwater…
