Does everyone think Riddler will be the next baddie in the series?

  2. Dahcheet

I’m not gonna lie, that’s pretty frickin sweet.

I’m not sure who the next villain will be. Did I miss any kind of clues at the end of Dark Knight that might have shown who the next one will be?

  3. Rachel

Call me a stickler for details, but the small print hasn’t been changed. It still says “Dark Knight” and has Ledger listed in the cast.

How about some speculation on who the riddler will be?

  4. Turtlepants

The title reminds me of a harlequin novel.

  5. Dami

    Batman 3 needs Bane.
I don’t see how Riddler can possibly top Joker.
Send Bane in to break the bats spine!

  6. Boot2TheHead

I heard Catwoman (Cher, yes really) and Riddler (Johnny Depp). I hope that what I heard was wrong. I know I’m in the minority, but the dreariness of Dark Knight coupled with Cher as Catwoman will make me write off this series.

Frank Gorshin is dead too. Is there no end to this Dark Knight curse!?!?!?!

“Gotham Knights” sounds like a night time soap opera, and the riddler looks like a pimp. I don’t see how the third batman can have the riddler though. Isn’t he just a tamed down Joker? Despite the Dark Knight being one of the best movies of this decade, there were some cheesy/leap of faith parts. There is a very thin line between great and corny super hero movie. I think the riddler would cross that line, if only because it would resemble the Joker and because of Ledger’s performance being very hard to top.

if catwoman is gonna be in the new film i think pfeiffer should come back as her.
though i tihnk it would be quite cool if the story was based around The Dark Knight Returns – an ageing batman comes out of retirement to clean up gotham.

  11. chris

I hope its not depp, he overacts everything, which is beneficial to some performances but it doesnt fit in with Nolan’s batman series.

  12. Bullistics

I heard Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin… I really like that choice. (Please… no flipper hands alla Danny Devito)

Also, I heard Angelina Jolie for the Catwoman (crap, I don’t know if she or Cher is worse).

Johnny Depp=Terrible Riddler (Jim Carey was perfect, but won’t fit this style of movie)

I’m gonna say that I would like to see the best villain ever… Man-Bat.

  13. Ransom

There are two candidates for Riddler that I really like. One is David Tennant, the current Doctor, playing the eccentric canon version of the character. The other is Jim Carrey, playing E. Nigma as an homage to the Zodiac serial killer.

  14. William

    Killer Croc and Clayface

  15. Dustin

It’s been said a million times, so I’ll make it a million and one: there is as of yet no script, so NO ONE has been cast or even considered. I want to see Penguin, and I think PSH would be great, I’d rather not see the Riddler, but we won’t have any idea for a long time.

  16. Groober

    found this on http://nickmilne.wordpress.com/2008/07/22/more-on-the-dark-knight-spoilers/

“There’s another foreshadowing though, that’s a bit more peculiar. One thing that’s been good about Nolan’s restrained approach to things is that we’ve been spared the many villains whose real names just happen to match up with their eventual criminal vocations (as with Victor Fries [Mr. Freeze] and Edward Nygma [E. Nygma - The Riddler]). Jonathan Crane (the Scarecrow) had a nice gothic name, but other than that we’re cool.

Or are we? We have reason to think differently. The character of Reese, the too-smart consultant who follows the money and figures out that Bruce Wayne is Batman, seems to have been introduced for no good reason at all. This is not to say that he’s unwelcome, by any means; his arc is both hilarious and effective, particularly after the Joker invites the people of Gotham to kill him to save their own skins. His name is a strange one, and was obviously chosen for a reason. What might that be? Well, let’s say it fast. Mr. Reese. Mysteries? Very similar to the Riddler’s other nominal justification (”Mr. E.”), wouldn’t you say?”

  17. Esta

    Well done. Nice Riddler costume.

  18. mentosboy

Although i think the poster is awesome and i love the riddler, however There was only one case in the entire movie where i think that it was hinted toward the next bad “guy” in the next bat man when he was getting his new armor from morgan freeman he asked will it keep out dogs? morgan freeman said “well it might keep out a cat” draw your own conclusions just thought id throw it out there and see how you guys see it

  19. mentosboy

never thought about the Mr. Reese idea thats a good one still i lean toward catwoman again with my before mentioned statement about a cat and also they have to sex it up in the next one i think last two have just been mind blowing explosions and crazy fights, throw a ninja cat with skin tight clothes i think you have the next sequel not that i want that it just seems like the logical place for the movie to go

  20. codemonkey

    Dude thats pimp

  21. anony

The poster is very convincing, and the whole “Mr. Reese” deal was smart, but I don’t think he’d fit into Nolan’s universe.

Why not Deadshot? After the end of the Dark Knight, he seems like someone who’d fit into that story.

1st of Dustin is right, secondly i read this comment on the page and i happen to agree A LOT.

I think Michael C. Hall (Dexter) would play an excellent Riddler.

Now tell me that isnt a brilliant idea.

  23. Lifeisaglitch

Not to be confused with Anthony Michael Hall who was rumored as the Riddler but played a journalist instead.

I think I’d like an older woman vision for Catwoman. I’m tired of the Chinese gymnasts with implants version.

My favorite villain has always been Mr. Freeze, since I grew up watching the animated series which turned him from a punny gag character into one of the deepest comic book villains since the Joker. Since he’s geared to cryogenics and biochemistry instead of magic he might yet fit with Nolan’s universe. Mr. Freeze’s motive would resonate with Batman after losing his love in The Dark Knight and would contrast two different ways of dealing with such loss: Freeze with denial and hope, Batman with acceptance and despair. Watching Batmans analyze his own situation and Freeze become an emotionless husk would make for a fine movie.

Watching a CG chick in a wetsuit playing a purring prostitute? That sounds weak and routine. Something Nolan’s not done with The Dark Knight.

My favorite villainess is Harley Quinn, and I would have loved to have seen at least a cameo with her and Joker in the next movie.

  25. mercator

PS Hoffman as Penguin would be awesome. Catwoman bleh. If it had to happen I would want someone interesting, like Kiera Knightly or Demi Moore or Natalie Portman. Riddler… Whew so many good choices there. What about Robert Downey Jr.? I know he’s already tied to Ironman, but it could be interesting…

I wonder if there is a villian that Harrison Ford could do. I think that would be interesting…

I’d like to see Guy Ritchie do a Batman movie (and not give Madonna a role).

  26. WarlockJA

I would love to see the Riddler in the next movie. It would be a good opportunity to see Batman as what he is, a detective. Make the Riddler a vicious egotistical serial killer that the cops can’t catch and put Batman on the trail.

We have seen batman train to be batman (body) and we have seen him make the hard choices in Dark Knight (soul), this next movie could be about the mystery to solve (mind) which would completely round out the series in my opinion.

  27. Rex Hondo

I think Riddler as the primary baddie would almost be a step backwards, after two movies with MAJOR Batman villains. You almost need somebody in the league of Bane or Hush, and since Hollywood seems to have a compulsive need to give every superhero a love interest in every movie, we’d be much better off with a well written Catwoman in the mix than with any of the disposable blondes from the 80′s and 90′s Bat-flicks.

Just please don’t make it Cher. That’d be way too Shades-of-Eartha-Kitt for me. With luck, Nolan will once again find somebody who we would never expect, but will absolutely nail the part.

  28. Kazziuz

The Riddler is a stupid villan, I don’t think Nolan is gonna use him, as he is not going to use Robin or Batgirl, EVER. I think the next one is going to focus on Harvey Dent (I am sure that he is not dead)

  29. Dboy

“Guess who?” should not have a question mark as it is not a question.

  30. loki

I Agree the Riddler is a stupid villan.

  31. Lex

    I liked this take more:

    http://www.themovieblog.com/2008/08/dark-knight-sequel-poster

    Feels more like Nolan’s Batman

  32. Lesley R.

You know who I think would make a pretty good Catwoman (if you have to go that route) Charlize Theron. Although I wasn’t fond of Aeon Flux on the whole, she’s got a good grasp of the acrobatics involved. But the real kicker is she can really do dark (think Monster). She would be able to put on that mask and really bring an essence to the screen.

Ok, and she’s hot too, which would play into all that sexual tention that Bruce/Batman always felt for the Catwoman.

  33. chris

The poster LEx linked is WAY WAY better, thats a good poster for a fan to make, the idea is professional standard.

Also the Mr Reese thing? a stretch at best, trying to say he wasnt a neccesary character, you might as well look at any of the cops besides gordon or the mob bosses as they has just as big a roll, reese also provided a crutial part in the shift of narrative for the joker from just adversaries to nemesis.

also the wordplay is a stretch too. I think its likely he’ll be back with the information he has especially after the end of the dark knight, but not as the riddler.

  34. Eons_past

I’ve got my fingers crossed for the Riddler.

For those nay sayers, I think you need to consider this: Johnny Depp has that odd ability to adapt to any character. Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, he plays convincing roles. He would be awesome

  35. Rex Hondo

Now, if it were me, any B-level villains introduced in the third movie would be used in a similar manner to Scarecrow in Dark Knight, as a short opening action sequence, a warmup for the real conflict. Even a (I almost dread to say it) montage showing some of the new criminals that have popped up in the year or so since the last movie ended.

I’d still go with Bane. Picture it. Batman has been labeled an outlaw, had public opinion turned against him, and is being hunted by his former allies in the GCPD. A new costumed avenger starts his own war on crime, proving to be equal to Batman in every way, if not superior, a true bane of criminals. (Get what I did there?) With every crime boss Bane takes down, the public loves him more and he gains a stronger grip on the underworld he claims to be fighting. At some point, he vows to break the Bat. Gordon has his suspicions. Toss Catwoman into the mix for even more gray area, and you’ve got yourself a movie.

  36. Aroinak

Riddler: Best choice for the next batman movie.
Hush: Runner up to riddler for best villain for the next one.
Zsasz: 3rd place. It would be nice to see how they would handle him.
Penguin: Eh, I don’t know. It might work, but it would take quite a bit of work.
Dr Freeze: It would be rough. He’s highly unrealistic.
    Poison Ivy: Please, please no.
    Killer Croc: Hell no.
    Clayface: HELL no.
    Catwoman: Oh god, please no.
Man-Bat: I can not put my intense distain for that stupid thing in writing.
