That’s not actually what Valve is working on. Their art director may be but Valve itself is developing HL2:EP2 and Team Fortress 2 and Portal. I think.

  2. jeremy

God i’m so excited by team fortress 2 and portal, never really got into hl2 though, being a console gamer not a computer gamer.

  3. Rasnarok

Valve isn’t actually working on this game. It’s a development studio called Arkane who made Dark Messiah – Might and Magic. It looks great and I can’t wait to find out more

  4. The HellJack

    Whoa…

I think I get the concept. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like you can play a single player story line while other folks involve themselves in multi-player combat.

Sort of like if you were trying to finish a level of “Halo 2″ while 10 other jokers were playing capture the flag.

Might be cool, but I would get royally pissed if some jerk fragged me just as I was about to complete a level I had been working 2 hours on.

    We’ll have to see.

  5. Aramax

How can you possibly cross multiplayer with single player… they’re opposite!

You play alone or you play with other peoples, make up your mind.

  6. farmer_j0e

you ladies just discribed what any MMORPG is, gratz. For example WOW.

Now think of something bright, outside the box, you might be along the lines of what they were thinking.

  7. J.L.Jones

I’m assuming that you’re playing an operative in some sore of group in that you take a mission and at any time during the mission, An opposing operative that, instead of being controlled by the computer, is controlled by a person, can pop in at any time. Also, Operatives from your own crew can join up and help if you wish.

Leaving the game online and linkable during a single player game would be fairly interesting. And if you just want single player without some random dude hunting or helping, Just shut off the connection.

    I like it.

lol, Crossplayer. Probably I’m the only one laughing but its funny nonetheless.

For anyone who doesn’t know, people who dress up as characters from anime at conventions etc. are called cosplayers (a portmanteau of costume and play). People who dress up as characters from the opposite gender (e.g. a guy dressing up as Sailor Moon) is refered to as crossplayer (again a portmanteau of cosplay and crossdresser).

  9. Sollstice

    @ Chaosof99
Isn’t it called a crossdresser when the person dresses up like the opposite gender?

  10. Flare576

    @ Sollstice

Yes, unless they’re dressing up as a character of another gender. That’s considered “more” weird, and therefore gets a new name! (no offense meant to cross dressers or players)

  11. HellJack

    None taken…

    I MEAN…ummmm…dammit!

  12. BrokenMind

All I know is that if they are working on a way to combine a single player experience, with multiplayer mayhem, things are gonna get interesting.

Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, well, only time will tell.

Personally, I’m hoping for good thing.

  13. Jeremy

my guess is that it’s basically a single player campaign, but in a mmo way. I think that you are trying to complete a single player story, and have other people who choose to be bad guys playing a single player mode as a bad guy, which includes trying to kill you instead of just AI enemies, it’s real intelligence enemies

  14. Mike

lmao crossplayer. Here we call it co-op.

  15. Radeus

isnt Crossplayer basicly a MMO ? pretty much all MMO games have single and multiplayer elements…

    talk about hyping something ancient…

  16. Shaymus22

Maybe it’s that you can play single player, but instead of bots for enemies, you have real people!
    I win!

  17. Atlantis1982

I’ve seen this been done with other games, such as Perfect Dark on the N64: with the modes co-op and counter-op.

  18. farmer_j0e

Yay, perfect dark was the first to initialize a setup where you could be the bad guy and the main goal was to stop Joanna Dark from completing the objective. I also believe this will be the case but instead it will be like

Operative: Transport 10 people from point X to Z, 5 must survive
Counter-Operative: eliminate 7 hostages before the operative reaches Z.

It looks like it going to be fun.

  19. Dustin

Yeah, I took it to mean that it would be a counter-op game. It would be neat if you had all your campaigns lined up and each time you took one it randomly paired you with a different online nemesis working on completing their objective. I will admit that “single player…multiplayer…crossplayer” is the stupidest line I’ve ever heard. Just say “a new type of single player game.”

  20. PurrNaK

It could be just that the single player game never really ends.

    Your mission: Kill 2000 enemies
    - If you play single player the enemy runs around and you shoot it. Then you get bored and go into multiplay for some CTF. While in there your enemy count gets complete.

    OR,

You mission: Located Dr. Floyd and take him to his office.
    - He can only be found in a multiplayer map and you have to exit a certain point with the dr. to continue your game.

Quake 2 did cross maps sort of. You had to go through a couple of different levels to get back across a bridge or something.

  21. Jonas(Dr.D)

Whatever it is… Its obviously useing the source engine. Didnt might and magic use it so therefore valve does has there hand in it right? Anyways They never dissapoint me

  22. Mat

    i’m thinking this:

    One person is main char.
everyone else is random thug/ baddy.

but with checkpoints and the like, so a set number of lives for the baddies for each section. the single player must then get through areas, just as a single player game would. I’d also imagine no chatting from baddy to single, as it takes away from the single player’s experience.

    just my thoughts…

  23. Doctorsoul

Whatever it means, the thread is filling with speculations… mission accomplished….
not my cup of tea though…

  24. Flamov

You know why this pisses me off….

Valve; why the fu*k are you not working on EP2? You are bringing all this crap into Steam, including CSS Dynamic Weapon pricing (Which was a failure) and you might of forgotten this, but Half-Life was rated ‘The Best Game Ever’ and you can’t even be fuc*ed to continue it.

This just pisses me off… and advertisement in CSS and 1.6 isn’t their best move yet…

  25. ackblom12

You do realize there are are such things as multiple development teams right?

  26. JaFO

It looks like they’re inventing a pretty stupid reason for single-player titles to have an on-line connection active.
It does indeed describe what MMO’s really are except for the ‘massive’ part.
Testdrive Unlimited has tried to do it and it sort of works there.

And co-op seems to fit as well, but I don’t see how they can make this concept ‘fun’ if instead as a co-op you get an extra human-controlled enemy.
Imagine playing on ‘easy’ and then having the kind of no-life near-aimbotter as your opponent …. lots of fun … not!

Never mind it probably means there’s no way you can deactivate Steam this time.

  27. D

Meh, it looks quite cool but I hate online games. Far too many dickheads out there ruining it for the rest of us. Would rather play a decent single player any day.

  28. Masterwabbit

I remember a while back that some game was working on something a bit single/multiplayer like. I believe it had to do something with a mob like game. Anyways, there were multiple positions that one needed to play. Read *one* needed to play. For example, in the sniper mission part of the job, you knock off some bloke guarding a door 10 minutes into playtime. The next step where you might be a thief sneaking into the building, 10 minutes into the game, the bloke guarding the door is sniped, via you before hand.

I have no idea if that’s what this Crossplay means, but hey, it’s a guess.
