Seems that CAD is getting an animated series! Its all independant, but it looks really good! High quality stuff. You can see trailers and stuff here.

But he’s charging for it… that’s so lame.

I’d make it free just because with the amount of site traffic that thing is going to generate (Tim has craploads of traffic already though) he could kick up the price of advertising on his site and THEN after the series is finished sell it on DVD.

I mean 90% of the people who are going to see the series will do so through BT or filesharing anyways.

  2. Scott

yeah, not thrilled with the pay model.

If anyone out there owns an animation studeo and wants to work on an original project with me, you know how to find me. :)

  3. Abby Normal

Paying for some cartoon if lame. Money grubbing bastard. Would rather see it as a free thing, or with adds but I am not paying for a damn 30 minute cartoon.

  4. Sep

The episodes will be on bittorrent the day after each one comes out… I dont think its Tim who is doing the charging though, if i had to guess it would be the blind ferret guys behind it :P

  5. Andrew

You have to realize that he is independant, he is living off his comic right now and he has to pay for the animation and hosting costs somehow.

  6. S

He did have an explanation for why he’s charging for it:

Why are we charging for the animation, you ask? Well, the comic strip is a one-man endeavor. I create this comic four times a week because I absolutely love to do so. I am fortunate enough to make a living at it, and I do well enough, so it’s ok if not everyone that reads the comic supports the website.

However, fully animated shorts take a whole team of people, from animators, to directors/producers, to voice actors, all of whom need to be paid. So as much as we’d love to give it away, the bean-counters won’t let us.

Makes perfect sense to me, at least.

  7. Frankydoody

You know you love the Star Wars-style poster!

  8. Johnny

He could do what the RoosterTeeth team did/does with redvsblue. Have paying members, but also release a free Lo-res copy. Then release all the Hi-res with extras on DVD.

However, like mentioned above, Tim is living off the comic where as the redvsblue team all had jobs when they first started. They mostlikely don’t need the jobs but you know what I am saying.

  9. Kleedrac

Johnny is seconded … I think Tim is money grabbing with this. He’s been pimping his Premium Services like cocaine for the last bit here already, never mind now. Why is it I’m expecting a near-future story arc to include how the boy who didn’t pay for Tim’s medical bills got herpes?

    Kleedrac

  10. TheKeck

Yeah, I’m with the majority here. Cool idea, but I’M certainly not going to pay for it. Oh well.

  11. S

Johnny: Well, the people at Rooster Teeth do everything themselves as far as I know, including voice acting. Tim has hired people who will expect some money for their effort. So I think the CAD thing will demand more money. Especially since it will be animated, and not just recorded with an Xbox, PC and Halo like Red vs. Blue is. So I don’t really think one can make that comparison, since there’s quite a lot of difference between the two projects. I for one think that the CAD series will need a heck of a lot more financial support.

And regarding DVD’s… those would be sold a long time after the series have begun production. I don’t really think Tim’s “workers” (hehe) would want to wait that long to get some money for their work. It will require time and effort from them, and they also need money for rent and food, like the rest of us.

Sure, I have absolutely no idea of how much money Tim makes thanks to his comic, but surely he couldn’t pay for that whole project all alone with what he’s earned? After all, it seems like a really big project.

Not that I want to claim to have any inside knowledge about this, or anything. I’m just putting my thoughts and guesses into words.

  12. Johnny

No it is okay, It makes sense. I guess it wasn’t the best comparison.

  13. Anubis

i strongly agree with this strip, http://www.checkerboardnightmare.com/, he says things that are very true.

  14. TofuTheGreat

I don’t think it’s fair of people to demand that Tim (and the others involved) to give away his work for free. People are crying that a 30 minute cartoon will cost $2.99 (or $1.66 with a pre-pay subscription). Put down one less mocha latte and you’re there. As he stated he’s got production costs to cover.

“But I get the Simpsons for free”. B.S. Cable bills aren’t free (not to mention the price of the crap being advertised that’s actually PAYING for the show).

“But I get 5 bazillion channels on cable for my $”. Yeah but how many do you watch at ONE time. Divide your bill amount by the number of hours you watch the tube a month. Tell me how much you’re paying an hour to watch the tube.

Face it people stuffs not free no matter what you think. The old “no free lunch” applies to EVERYTHING.

And as for the comments about BT’ing the episodes. (grabs soap box) That’s one helluva reason why the fee is that high. If it weren’t for effing greedy thieves a lot of things in this world wouldn’t be so expensive. (puts away soap box)

  15. TofuTheGreat

Anubis: Straub is a great guy. I check on SSC daily. But to wonder why CAD can be a success when PA and PvP are around? Come on. The Simpsons was around before The Family Guy and TFG is successful (so I hear anyway as I don’t watch it).

  16. Sebastiaan

    ow the paragraphs….

  17. Scott

the whole thing seems to be generating much talk.

  18. PurrNaK

It comes down to this. Money. Yes. You don’t want to pay it but the guys gotta pay rent right?

CAD is one of the better comics around. It’s well done and hits the target market. People visit the site because they like it. But honestly how many of you have bought one of his shirts or clicked on one of his ads?

Obviously there’s enough clicking on the links to fund the comic and a bit more. But like all of us, he probably wants to live a little better. So he’s working his butt off and getting something new started up. I’m amazed he can do it so cheep.

Reference to the simpsons. The voice actors alone bring in well over 100 grand a year. The animators probably more. The ads that run during those shows pay millions.

Personally I’m considering funding the animated CAD. The more money that he gets the better the toon will be right? If everyone just goes and gets it for free then the comic will stop and all will be sad because we lost something cool.

I tried doing a webcomic once. It’s hard work and finding the time is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. purrnak.endofinternet.net shameless plug? No an example of a wannabe. So I give respect to anyone that does a webcomic.

  19. TheKeck

“However, fully animated shorts take a whole team of people, from animators, to directors/producers, to voice actors, all of whom need to be paid. So as much as we’d love to give it away, the bean-counters won’t let us.

If you can’t afford, or aren’t interested in CAD Premium, don’t worry. Ctrl+Alt+Del as you’ve come to know it will remain free. You’ll still get everything you’ve become accustomed to getting (comics, news, reviews, forums, etc).

CAD Premium is just extra stuff for those fans who want to pay for a little more CAD in their lives.”

I read this over on CAD’s website. It really changed my opinion of the whole issue.

as much as i dislike the idea of paying 30 bucks for 3 to 4 min chapters of a comic, im not complaining about that, the fact that someone would charge for something devoid of quality doesnt get me either, his comic is really subpar, mildly funny at best, yet thats not what bothers me, what i really dont like its his attitude, i kinda get the vibe every now and then that tim is jealous and that he is incredibly desperate to shine over PA, i mean he literally mimics everything they do, the digital overload thing, is a crappy PAX, his charity drive its a Crappy childs play, and so on, dont get me wrong, those things are cool, but somehow i kinda catch a glimpse of stupid childish rivalry in the way he speaks of such things, i dont know maybe its just me, to each his own

  21. Johnny

I still respect him and all webcomics-persons for what they do. I don’t see you doing what they are doing?

I mean disscussing the idea of charging is one thing, but totally trash talking a guys work is another.

Anubis: Do you have anything that is even close to Digial Overload or PAX? Are you trying to help the community in any way simular?

  22. Anubis

I forgot to mention i also dislike how every male character has the legs the size of barrels

  23. beftman

Tim Buckley doesn’t deserve a fucking thing he has. that rich asshole has no talent and way too much money.

  24. Sep

Anyone ever checked out CAD’s advertisemnt charges?

Ze stuff charges $2.99 for the top banner per 1000 views of the web page and $2.49 for the big side one… Now CAD Generates 250,000 Unique Visitors Every day. you can do the math on how much that adds up to a day. now the Zestuff Website is no longer linked for advertising since Blind ferret took over that section…but i wouldent imagin they would just change the format of charges.

    http://www.blindferret.com/mediarep.php
and for more accurate numbers… http://extremetracking.com/open;sum?login=absathx

  25. Sep

Also to note thats before you add in t-shirts, posters, and 2 books.

  26. S

Heh, someone has sure enough made the right career choice. Damn…

  27. realityintern

I would like to see the pilot for free before I consider paying for it.

  28. Anubis

Johnny, In fact I do, iam a chef and I own 2 restaurants and i organize food drives for the homeless almost once a month

  29. Anubis

sep, ZeAds is no more, i think they were bought by blind ferret, or they are blind ferret, so its kinda the same.

  30. Lord_Mabalon

Personally, I agree with reality interns idea of seeing the pilot for free, or maybe one or two episodes for free in low-res – if we have to pay for this sort of thing we should be able to see a sample of the work before we shell out our hard-earned cash. I like CAD but you can never tell with comic-to-TV show adaptations, it could very well end up as a bunch of mindless crap.

  31. Johnny

Well, Anubis. I owe you a huge appology. Please ignore me, I’m a n00b.

  32. Windy

    Ah, the joy of capitalism.

  33. Fallen

I have been a very long time reader of CAD and I “donate” money to alot of different entertainment*cough*. Since Tim has givin me free entertainment for a while, I dont mind donating alittle bit more. What if Podcasting had a high price tag that Scott had to off-set with a surcharge. I, for one, would definatly pay for the high quality entertainment ELR provides.

  34. Anonymous

Okay it’s not like Tim is forcing you to pay for it. Stop getting your panties in a knot over this thing. If you don’t feel the animation isn’t worth it then don’t get it ffs.

  35. Sep

    Anubis i know…i even said it :P .

I think Tim is lucky realy… creating something he likes to do and earning alot of cash for it.

  36. dxtx

Red vs Blue is something RoosterTeeth can (and probably do) produce entirely themselves, since Halo serves as their medium. The CAD animation is something he has hired a studio to work on — animators, voice talent — and to expect it to be -free- …

If you don’t like CAD and/or refuse to pay for things, that’s your choice. But to question the necessity of charging for something that probably cost him quite a bit of money to produce, expecting to get everything you want for free, is more than a little selfish and unrealistic, in my opinion.

  37. Anubis

hey i would pay for myextralife podcast if i had to, its one of the few things that actually makes me laugh like a madman every week

  38. Adult dating

I read this over on CAD’s website. It really changed my opinion of the whole issue.
