A quote:

Cho Seung Hui, the troubled young man whose nightmarish assault on his fellow students will most likely be studied for years to come, doesn’t seem to have been someone who had any involvement with video games in his recent history. Despite certain idiotic claims by both the man who needs to stop using my surname and Dr. Phil, it seems that he actually didn’t own any video games… violent or otherwise. According to the search warrant, Cho’s dorm room revealed the following items to authorities:

my favorite part is where at the bottom of the screen it give Thompson’s name and then refers to him as a “school shooting expert” how the heck does he become a expert at this. The only thing Jack is an expert at shooting off is his mouth.

    On a sidenote:
Jack claims, that Erfurt would have impacted the german race for chancellor 5 Years ago:
    1. In Germany there is no such thing as a “race for chancellor”, we elect our parliament, THEY choose the chancellor out of their ranks. Each party elects a candidate before head they will choose if winning, but we do not elect the chancellor directly.
    2. I have never EVER heard ANYONE mention before that Erfurt would have impacted said election. Common understanding in germany is, that the two big events that made Gerhard Schroeder chancellor for a second time were a flood in eastern germany happening in summer 2002 and his decision to strictly oppose the war in Iraq.

lol I’d like to see his face when Microsoft sues him for doing such a stupid comment and tells him that Valve makes Counterstrike, not Microsoft.

Everywhere I go, I see gamers blasting Jack Thompson for his extremist views on video games. I’m a hardcore gamer myself and I play shooters. While I detest Thompson in general, I would not go so far as saying video games have zero effect on gamers’ psych. Why does the military use video games to desensitize soldiers? While it’s true that only inherently sick people will actually go out and shoot people, we can’t run away from the fact that violent video games do further condition these sick people to do sick things. That and the ready availability of guns.

The military uses video games to desensitize soldiers??? I must have been at sick-call that day, ’cause the only video game I ever saw during Basic was a SNES with a light-gun M16 and NES-quality marksmanship ‘game’.

What does the Army use to desensitize soldiers? Drill Sergeants.

Scott, I am scared about the whole thing, but the first thing that came to my mind was why were you on gaygamer.net???

This guy [i]had[/i] to have “rehearsed” it by playing Halo or whatever, which most likely “pushed him over the edge and actually, literally, [i]train[/i] him to do what he did.” Of course, the dumbass news anchor introduces Thompson as an “expert in school shootings” rather than “anti-video-game activist” and praised him as being, “so eloquent.”

“The worst school shooting on the planet’s history prior to this was in Germany. Robert Steinhauser killed 16. Authorities in Germany went to his home and found 52 shooter games that he’d immersed himself in, most notably Counter-Strike Half-Life, which was his game of choice even to the point of dressing up like the hero of that game for his assault. So that involvement of video games in that instance actually changed the elections in Germany and has changed the law in Germany because of the central role of these murder simulation games in that event.”

So many things are so wrong with that, the least of which is that there’s no particular “hero” in Counter-Strike, and that it actually sets a stage where you get the opportunity to prevent terrorist acts. Asshole. Oh, and by the way, the nutjob in Germany was dressed basically like any ninja/robber. He was in all black with a ski mask. I do not feel guilty when I hope that Jack Thompson meets an untimely demise in a comically absurd, embarrassing, self-inflicted manner.

Well, it looks like BB Code doesn’t work here :)

Come on, does anyone really take JT seriously anymore? He’s taking a seriously horrible situation and spouting the same old rhetoric. If any lesson can be taken from this it’s this, be a friend. Maybe if Cho did play some games with other students, he wouldn’t have been so depressed, and this week would never have unfolded like it did.

And when the Locust Horde rises up from the depths of the earth, ole Jackie boy’s gonna be wishin’ he had dropped the $$$ for a 360. Seriously though, back in the day, someone modded a star wars text game for the apple IIe replacing villains with our high school staff. The game was passed around more than a beach ball at lollapalooza, yet NO ONE ever shot (or took a light saber to) our principals. It’s always the exceptions, never the rule.

    school shooting expert?

he has first hand experience on that then?

Seriously unless you actually hold a rifle/handgun in your hand and do walk through abandoned buildings a video game is not going to teach you anything about how to use those weapons… Also firing a rifle/handgun in real life totally different then having your crosshairs on the screen all the time… A video game might give you the general mind set of what to do, but till you actually start practicing in real life you have no idea what to expect… Also tell me how many times does a gun jams in a video game and how do you resolve that issue…

If you want to use video games as an example for training then I can fly an f-14 tomcat better then most pilots in the airforce now.
