8. Space Tourist Richard Garriott
For just $30 million you too can visit outer space. Texan computer game developer Richard Garriott paid that lofty fee to Russia’s Federal Space Agency for a chance to blast off aboard a Soyuz rocket in October. The son of former NASA astronaut Owen Garriott, the younger Garriott became the first American second-generation space traveler when he took a 10-day vacation to the International Space Station.

Didn’t garriot take up some DNA from stephen colbert? why wasnt that in the list?
i thought that hadn’t happened yet…maybe it did.
Water Bears? Cute? Are these scientists insane?
Yup. DNA sequences (not the DNA itself) went up with Ole British: http://www.richardinspace.com/ I think it should be noted that it wasn’t just a vacation, though. RG takes the space program seriously and realizes that the resources up there are far too precious for some layabout to monopolize. He pitched in his share of labor (in addition to the PR, which is expected from all of the ‘nauts). He (like the others) also served as a test subject in the ongoing research of spaceflight. The studies continued past his landing (and started before launch), so his “vacation” was longer than 10 days if one categorizes his stay up there as a vacation.
…
I just wanna know how many times he threw up on the trip.
I think its funny that the dna thing was a tabula rasa desperation ad campaign… Only to have Garriott resign once he got back, and Tabula Rasa is to die in a few weeks. I wonder if the DNA will be shot into space or something…
Richard Garriott was awesome up in space. He’s also the first second-generation ham radio operator to operate from space. He happened to be up in the station during the annual Scout Jamboree on the Air and talked to a bunch of Scouts from all over the world. Now if you’re a young boy, how cool is it to talk to a video game legend who’s on the space station by ham radio?! And you were always told that video games were a waste of time…
Well, his latest game completely failed…
Meh. He had a good run in video games. Ultima since the Apple II days (talk about staying power), Bioforge, UO, Lineage, CoH/CoV… Let’s not forget that (like U8/U9), RG’s original TR concept was never implemented. Like SWG, it suffered a complete rewrite (though it was before launch, unlike SWG). Sure, he has some lemons under his belt, too, but who doesn’t?
Bugsss … iiinnnn …. spaaaaace!
What’s next ? An incoming rock from a certain bugplanet ?
I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.
duuude they didn’t mention the bag of tools? in a few thousand years someone’s house is going to be obliterated by a monkey wrench asteroid.
