We all love our lists here at Extralife, and thaks to Next-Generation we have another one. They’ve posted a the Top 100 PC Games Of The 21st Century. The list has a little twist on it, and isn’t just based around what editors personally believe to be the Top 100 games. The list was ranked entirely on unit sales. It makes for some very interesting, and suprising, reading. For instance, who knew Barbie Pet Rescue out sold the likes of Far Cry and Max Payne. The list also includes other information on each title, including Revenues, Franchise Sales, Estimated Sales, game ranking and more.
The list seems is pretty controversial, as I find it hard to believe that some of thos titles managed to sell so many units. What does everyoen think the biggest suprise is?

This the why they dont do these top 100 charts these way.
I mean the sims? cmon!
and HL2 got beaten by a backyard basket ball game?
Sure WoW desearved it i mean,it happens to have one of the most sold amounts and people just wont stop playing it,i mean how long did it take for the sims to run out of fashion?
Barbie Pet Rescue
Publisher: Mattel
Developer: Human Code
Released: Aug ’00
Estimated Sales: 500,000
Franchise Sales: 5.0 Million
Revenues: $12.6 Million
……die
What does “Franchise Sales” mean?
I think its an interesting look on *ques high comedic voice* piraaaacy.
As much as we all love to deny it, we are hurting the game industry when we download games. Even if you yourself just “download them to test it out” or whatever morale grounds you use to try and not look like your stealing, what happens if your friend borrows your RIP from you?
I torrent and i realize what i am doing.
The problem is, the list doesn’t take into account, for example how many times HL 2 was purchased over steam, only how many physical units were sold. This probably accounts for why HL 2 was outsold by Who Wants To Be a Millionaire.
This is indeed proof that piracy hurts the industri. I mean, look at the list. How many of the “surprises” have sold their way into the list becouse they are games that appeal to a part of the population that doesn’t pirate on a regular basis?
If this list had been made to estimate how many copies existed (including pirated stuff) it would look very different.
In a way it makes a whole lot of sense that The Sims is the top game on that list, it was one of the few games that both cater to “true” gamers and the casual gamer, heck my mom, my little and bigsister and me all played it
The list is off… WOW is known to have over 7 million players… yet unit sales are only at 1.6… The same with The Sims which is the most grossing game ever… yet “only” has 126M in revenue… And then to think that the gaming industry is about as large as the movie industry these days… I do not believe anything on this list…
7 million players worldwide, that is.
“This list is for the U.S market only.”
Although I’m pretty sure I heard that WoW cracked 2 million in the U.S. recently.
And Mike, did you just justify your piracy by saying you know its wrong…
The problem with find out how many compies really exist is that 1. Not all the serial codes are legitamate, and 2. not all the games are registered (legit and no so much legit)
But still, yeah, I can see some of the games being on there simply because I didn’t buy a game…
I get the feeling that games exist that did way better than half those games on that list. (like, where are any of the hitman games?) Hard Truckers 2, although in the 100th spot, still can’t possible be good enough to beat out a game like Hitman
It’s not about how good these games are. Hard Trucks 2 is absolutely horrible. I mean really horrible. Barely playable. That doesn’t matter though because it’s 10 bucks at WalMart and the amount of uneducated (on the subject) casual gamers FAR outnumbers the “hardcore” crowd (or even “normalcore”).
That’s why these games sell better. Piracy has little effect on that. It’s simply because of casual gamers. Simple as that.
I just can’t believe that Starcraft isn’t even on that list….
I was about to ask the same thing. Where the hell is Starcraft?
Flawed List.
Starcraft is not on there, because it came out before 2000.
I am not suprised at this list really.
No. Im not justifying myself, Im sorta predefending myself.
See I torrent so what right do i have to say “Torrenting is bad” unless I acknowledge it myself.
So what im saying is “torrenting hurts the industry” and “I know that when I torrent, I hurt the industry”
In no way am I justifying myself.
…oops, my bad, I didn’t notice the date window…
Perhaps the list is correct… no… No… NO the list is evil!
Ok… I know that people have varying tastes and all, and I know that there is a lot of little girls that begged mommy to buy them a barbie game, but it definitly hurts to see Morrowind back in #62 and barbie pet rescue at #38
Starcraft should be on the list, even if it was before ‘00 Starcraft is the BEST PC GAME OF ALL TIME, AND NO SALES CHART WILL TELL ME OTHERWISE.
