This is a good read.
Today, many digital effects are so subtle that movie audiences often don’t notice them — but it wasn’t always so. We asked industry insiders to pinpoint the biggest breakthroughs in digital F/X history.

and of course, the matrix isnt there.
I dunno about The Polar Express… The whole movie was computer generated. That takes it our of the realm of special effects in my book.
I agree with Zathras, Polar Express should not be on this list.. I’d say it falls more under “Full Length Animated Feature” – F/X Scenes should be defined by their ability to realistically enhance REAL scenes.
yeah I heard The Polar Express was really crap..
The list just went to hell at number 7. 7-10 are not FX milestones
I woulda put T2 above Tron personally.. and left 7, 9, and 10 out altogether
Polar Express should not be in the list it is a CG cartoon, and a rather bad one at that.
If they were gonna stray from the idea of the article anyway and put any CG cartoon in there, it shoulda been Toy Story imo.
Yeah ditto on Matrix.
The Day after Tomorrow, come on who made this list?
I agree on Polar Express but I can’t see why the Matrix should take it’s place – it didn’t feature groundbraking DIGITAL effects.
The Fifth Element, anyone?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Star Wars shot looks like it’s from the 1997 Special Edition rather than the original theatrical version. I don’t think they had CGI X-Wings in the 70’s.
I can’t tell from that little pic if its from the special edition, but the point is they used computers to control camera movements so they could do much more complex blue screen shots than was previously possible.
Sorry – while Star Wars was incredible for 1977, nothing about 2001: A Space Odyssey? (sp) – 1968 and smoother effects. . .and NOT in the top 10????
Lord of the Rings at #8???
sigh. ugh.
@Dellen.
Bullettime.
Yep the Matrix used bulletime. It was the first to use the freezetime technique effectively and they practically invented bullettime
I think they did invent the bullet time effect, if not that, then the effect where the motion stops or slows and you pan around the action.
