At least I think so. Give me some names of those working on it and I suppose I could possibly be swayed, but not feelin’ it.

Boo! They’ve messed with the original cartoons enough as it is (un-colorizing and redubbing particular characters…)

  2. Gatis

I dont know how about CGI project, but Tom and Jerry was my favorite cartoon at my childhood.
Any way – thoes two are uncreadably great characters!

  3. Edge

i’m with you scott….totally gonna suck

this sounds like typical boardroom “innovation”…hey lets see if something that used to make us lots of money still can make us lots of money

  4. Eric

Can you say “Rocky and Bullwinkle”? Bet ya that they’ll have voices. The best part of T&J was that those two never spoke.

  5. bunnyrut

i’ve always hated tom and jerry.

  6. Icesnake

It will suck. No amount CGI is going to allow T&J to blow up an entire house, which is a typical example of how over-the-top their animated violence was pre-Dr. Spock.

  7. TD

Well, I was scared about Alvin and the Chipmunks when if first heard about the movie, but it turned out really well. I’ll give this one the benefit of the doubt, just because of Alvin :P

    O_O

Well, there’s always “Up” to look forward to for CGI films…

When I read the title of this post, I breathed in a heavy gasp and said “Oh no!”

WB ruined Bugs Bunny with Space F’G Jam, and now this. It’s an atrocity. A total travesty. I sit here shaking my head wondering WTF studio execs have for brains, and I’m sure the F certain it’s nothing anything consisting of brain cells.

The next big thing is hand animated cels, just like Tom & Jerry originally was, but in a modern setting using things we have today to play off of visually. So much more can be done now. Total awesome awaits. Crap Scott. I hate you. My dander is up. I love classic animation and this is like spitting on graves.
    .
Screw you, whatever studio is doing this. I will never see another movie by you, and most certainly NOT this.

I love classic animation and Tom and Jerry in their prime was some of the best. I rate the early stuff as on par with Max Fleischer’s works like the 1939 animated production of Gulliver’s Travels or his 1942 Superman serials, or even early Disney productions like Snow White or Fantasia. All of these productions involved hand painted cells, frame by frame, and painted by artists that really loved what they do and cared about their work. Well as to cgi, we have seen some works created by modern artists that have shown such love and care for their work that I would rate it as on par with those old masters of animation. I consider Wall-E and The Incredibles as being on par with anything that Fleischer or Disney produced. Therefore a great cgi Tom and Jerry movie IS possible… provided that the creators really CARE about the material. So until I see a trailer, i shall reserve judgement. In the meantime i’m going to Amazon to buy some classic Tom and Jerry on DVD. :-)

Noooo! I hate hate HATE CGI! Even CGI cutscenes in video games! It gives animation a bad name.

Why do they keep green lighting these movies?? Didn’t Garfield and the Chipmunks totally flop? It’s like they have these dumbass movie executives, who have NO creative intuition, putting forth these “brilliant” CGI remakes. Quit! There are tons of brilliant young artists and animators out there who would kill for just a fraction of the money put into these movies. And their stuff would probably blow our f’ing mind!

  13. Bearbutt

In my mind, CGI & cel animation are totally unrelated animals, and cannot be compared to each other. I’ve worked in CGI. One can’t compare Pixar to Fleischer.

  14. TheChao

nothing good will ever come of this

  15. Cantonkid

The track record of transitions from 2d to 3d is not all that good. Garfield, Scooby-do, Old Master Q, most have been big dissapointments to many fans.

Even though my favorite Simpsons’ episode is Homer3, it is simply becasue of the nature of that episode. I don’t think I would want to see a fully 3D CGI Simpsons series or movie beyond what they already do with some of the cartoon rendering.

  16. TD

@Bearbutt How can you hate Space Jam?? One of my all-time favorite movies O.o

  17. Stephen Schleicher

Tonesbroke2 sez: Didn’t Garfield and the Chipmunks totally flop?

and I sez: Chipmunks was a huge success. It only cost $60 million to make and brought in $360 million. Hence the, “Let’s greenlight everything, and rape those bastards’ childhoods!” decree from H’Wood.

  18. Tonesbroke2

    @ Stephen:

Sigh…you’re right. I guess when I think of success, I’m thinking more about the movies artistically.

Been trying to think of a CGI / Cel comparison. Here’s an attempt:
    .
Cel is like a fine wine.
    .
CGI is like a quad, venti, half-caff, one pump sugar-free vanilla, two pumps sugar-free hazelnut, extra-hot, ristretto latte, with half soy, half lowfat organic milk, with two paper cups from Starbucks.
    .
Attempting to turn one into the other can only end in one thing: Complete and utter failure.

Comparing Chipmunks with T&J is not as straightforward as “they were both animated hits in the day and were/are being translated to CGI for today’s big screen”. You also have to look at WHY each of them were hits. I watched chipmunks to see what kind of adventures Alvin and co. would have and to hear the crazy voices, which is easy to translate today: all they had to do was make sure the story was “epic” feeling and that the CGI as closely matched the cartoon style as possible.

I watched T&J to see what kind of crazy cartoon violence Jerry would put Tom through before the end of the day and to see if they’d blow up the house again: thanks to today’s censorship taboos, this does NOT translate into a kids movie. Maybe if they slapped an ‘R’ or ‘PG13′ rating, but the chance of someone taking an American animation and making it only for mature audiences has about a -3% chance of happening. So most likely, we’re going to get another “kid friendly” T&J movie which has the characters in it…and none of the biff/pow slapstick real fans would want.

They can make the characters look as authentic as they want: if they don’t include the violence of the original (and thus settle for a higher MSRB rating), I find it very difficult to believe that fans are going to enjoy the movie longer then the title screen.

People who have never watch T&J, of course, had a wide selection of other good movies to choose from, so why should they waste time on something that their fanboy friend says sucks royally?

*sigh* If I could draw I’d make my own R-rated animated film…

  21. eternalson

I don’t see the problem with making it CGI, Tom and Jerry were not that great to begin with. It was just graphic cartoon violence without much humor or storyline.

  22. Eric

@Bearbutt: I dunno. I’ve seen what these kids drink here at the U. Any caffeinated alcoholic beverage is bound to be very popular with the college crowds.

  23. JerrKat

The better question is which version are they adapting. I love the old T&J that was being airs in the early 80s but the recent stuff ( late 90’s 00’s) I’ve seen is just awful.
