Once in a while I get something that really gets me fired up. I live in Utah, one of a handful of states that were asked to give specific help to some of the folks displaced by hurricane Katrina.
In one case, we have a local army base called Camp Williams that was one of the first in the country to accept a few thousand evacuees from down there. This place is about 15 minutes from where I live.
They began arriving last week and were greeted with food, medicine, showers, comfortable beds, and other much needed help. I have actually stayed in Camp Williams as a teenager for a camp that they hold for youth and its top notch stuff.
I see people from New Orleans all the time down at our local Smiths grocery store, buying items, shopping, etc. Its about 8 or 10 minutes from the base. They are freely bused there and were smiling and happy as one might expect for a group of people who were without homes at the moment.
Then I get whiff of the following article sent to me by a friend today. Here is a taste:
Utah’s Governor Jon Huntsman has taken in some of the New Orleans refugees, at Camp Williams. Replete with barbed wire, armed soldiers with weapons at ready, police and sheriff with weapons at ready, and hell, they must surely feel right at home. In America yet. What bullshit! I’m not done with this outrage, not by a long shot. I’m actually just getting started.
Wh….what?? Dude! It’s an ARMY BASE! Of COURSE it has barbed wire, and armed soldiers! It has ALWAYS had these things! What did you expect the place to have? A shrimp bar and shuffleboard? They go on:
The Hurricane Katrina insurgency from New Orleans is tucked safely away behind the 6-foot chain link fence with the accommodating barb wire atop chain links. The ONLY entry into Detention Camp Utah is through the highly secure military gates that are guarded by armed military guards twenty four seven.
The ONLY access to the New Orleans insurgency is granted to military, government officials, and MAINSTREAM media.
Insurgency? What the CRAP????
Detention Camp Utah is located about 20 miles from downtown civilization. There is no transportation, public or otherwise, for the New Orleans insurgency.
Again, I am not sure what to say to this total fabrication. There is a HUGE population out there. They make it sound like its in the middle of the Sahara. Again, I see the buses and therefore the people at local stores all the time!
Detention Camp Utah is a windblown and barren military installation atop the foothills of what is known as the Oquirrh (pronounced ochre) Mountains. It is isolated and surely quiet.
What a freaknut. How does he explain the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of people that live all around the base, yours truly included?? I can ride a BIKE there! Here is the best part, all the local wards and churches are doing volunteer time at the base. This Thursday my wife is spending 4 hours there helping with whatever work they give her to do, and there are 12 of my neighbors that are doing likewise. The entire state has bellied up to the bar on this deal and are clamoring to help where they can.
To get into the place we have to bring a picture ID…that’s it! Real hard to get in…sheesh. The author of this article is a total and utter crackpot. I just don’t get it.
