I don’t know how to say it but the more real the looks of games become the more unreal I find their looks. Maybe when the gap between illusion and reality gets smaller it becomes even more obvious. The comic-like looks of the PS2 GTAs are much more immersive, imo.
?!
Wow, thats amazing – confirmed (by ign, take that how you will) that its gonna use DX10…. and I swear if my 7800GTe doesnt support it when it comes out im gonna cry like a bitch..
If I’m not mistaken, they don’t have the IP license for Far Cry but it’s still a spiritual successor to the game. Correct me if I’m wrong.
I know it’s DX10, but I still haven’t read if there’s a DX9 path or not. If not, then your 7800 GT won’t support it. It’d be surprising if they didn’t, but I guess that depends on when they release it.
Developers are beginning to realize they have to add some tech to reduce detail at certain levels to make CG more believable. Depth of field, motion blur, soft shadows — these are some first steps towards that goal.
Realistic shoulder-mounted camera movement would improve the immersion, but it can be detrimental to gameplay. But the more realistic, the more sick you’re going to get looking at it while sitting still. heh.
Just to nitpick, this isn’t actually FarCry 2. It’s a new game called Crysis.
Although, yes, it’s made by the Crytek and looks to have a very similar theme to FarCry.
(Oh, and it looks AWESOME! I need a new video card.
)
it’s gonna make my computer “cry”.
Far Cry has a space in it.
Ouch, Oblivion just got pwned…. O_O

These screen shots are nothing compared to the video. It all looks so much more impressive when its moving.
“Far Cry has a space in it.”
Perhaps. But the official logo certainly doesn’t. There’s some ambiguity there.
You know what makes me cry? Terrible puns.

Would you honestly want to play this without DX10, though? It wouldn’t look as good and/or run as fast.
Dellen is completely right about games, the more realistic they get the less “real they seem, thats due to uncanny valley.
PS: Uncanny valley is : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley

Yeah, that sounds pretty reasonable.
Thanks, Anubis. Very interesting article – and nice to know I’m not alone with my opinion.
