A quote:
Over the past few months, I decided to go back in time and relive the days of old. Instead of wasting my day doing things that just weren’t productive, I decided to get all of my old consoles out (NES, Genesis, SNES, 3DO, 32X, Sega CD, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 1 and 2 and the Nintendo 64) to finally make the decision on which console is truly the best of all-time (so far).

Bah, this guy is just trying to light the Genesis vs. SNES flame war again. Genesis forever!
I’d have to say that it’s a close one between the Genesis and Super Nintendo. One has Splatterhouse, Gunstar Heroes, uncensored Mortal Kombat, and Sonic games when they didn’t suck and the other has Super Metriod, Chrono trigger, and Super Mario RPG.
Besides Sega does what Nintendon’t!
Like releasing a CD and 32 bit add on that they didn’t support.
I definitely like the SNES better than the Genesis, but I don’t think I would say the SNES is the best system of all time, and if I did, it would just be nostalgia speaking.
Personally, I think the Playstation 2 is the best system of all time. Thinking back at the SNES, I can only think of a few games that I absolutely love: Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Donkey Kong Country. All Nintendo games, you’ll notice.
On the PS2, there are countless games that I love: MSG2, God of War, Devil May Cry, RE4, Beyond Good and Evil, Guitar Hero, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, to name a few.
I think that people love the SNES because it was probably the system they grew up with, but it is one system that I have not gone back and played very often.
I think you’ll find only Americans would class anything Nintendo as the best ever.
I never owned a SNES ***blushes***
I started buying consoles from the ps1, so I grew up NOT having a SNES
That makes it THE console for me
(playing chrono trigger right now on emu on macbook)
I had a Genesis but I gladly traded it with a friend and got his SNES instead. Now I have a Nes,SNES,N64,Gamecube AND Wii (Plus gameboy color and a DS) My beatiful Nintendo collection. Yes, I am a nintendo dork
And I would have to agree with this one. The SNES Is an excellent gaming system with a huge variety of classic magnificent games.
Go Go S-N-E-S power!
Was there any doubt agains this fact? ô.o
i still play mine. best system ever! SUPER FAMICON!!
Atari 800.
Whatever console has Final Fantasy 6, is the best for me.
In second that one that has Final Fantasy 7!
Wait, there are people that DIDN’T KNOW THAT?
#O Raposo so SNES it is!
I didn’t own an snes either… my game console started at pong -> atari 2600 -> nes -> then I got my first PC and it was all over until N64 -> GC -> PS2 -> Wii
There was a smattering of handhelds in there too – Atari Lynx, bought it the day I played a demo of it at GenCon. Gameboy, GBA, and a DS in there somewhere.
Even here at college my SNES is just on the other side of my TV, accompanied by my PS2. There are numerous awesome games for the SNES that few contemporary games have achieved, in a lot of areas. FF3 (US), is without a doubt the longest game I have ever played, perhaps only rivaled by other FF games. Chrono Trigger was the most ingenious games I’ve ever played. Super Metroid was one of those fun-as-hell games, as was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. And then, of course, the fighting games: Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.
Although I have to agree with Clive in saying that the PS2 is definitely an awesome system, the SNES was even better for what it was.
It’s all about the PSX for me (that’s the big grey clunky box, not the smooth edged little baby they made) – Although the only other platform I’ve owned is the PC. I’ve played enough XBox (both of ‘em), GC, Wii, PS2 and PS3 to know that my PS1 kicks all of their butts. As others have mentioned, the PSX was the start of the ‘graphics before gameplay’ releases. But there’s not that many of them – that’s what ruins the later consoles for me.
Oh, and for the record…. I’m 20 years of age and only got my first console (sorry, only console!) at the age of 14, so SNES and NES etc are a little before my time…..!
In summation – PLAYSTATION ONE ALL THE WAY BABY! Ahem.
n64 all the way
SNES it is!
Atari 2600 FTW!
No
¡Make a POLL!
Although I loved my Genesis, I must agree.
SNES wins this one and i’m too young to have grown up with it. Aside from having an incredible library of games like everyone else is saying, it has amazing stories behind each one. There are great games like Earthbound (my personal fav.), Chrono Trigger, or any of the Final Fantasy games for it. Each of those is an in depth game with a long story that keeps you wrapped in it.
As for the PS2 it may have a number of good games but when you pump out games like it and all the third party companies do you are bound to get lucky.
To be honest I would disagree on his stance on the original playstation. I mean some of the greatest games I can remember playing were on that old gray box, Metal Gear Sold, Resident Evil, FF 7-9, FF Tactics, Suikoden, Grand Theft Auto, Tekken, And i will admit the first Warcraft game I got my hands on was Warcraft II for the PS. If i had to pick between never playing a SNES game again or never playing a PS game.. I think I would pick the good old PS.. Call me a fan boy if ya want to.. But there were a lot of really good games on PS I am very glad I didnt miss.
I wanted to register and say that the who article was bias but almost everybody who commented on that article did it before me so…
*who = whole
Also, I wonder if that guy got payed to say that the snes was the best console ever… ( Could help Nintendo make a statement about the quality of their products to boost sales ) I think it’s not the first time I read articles like that litteraly promoting the goodness of everything nintendo.
If a gaming console is good it’s because of the games you can play on it. Show me the games and I will tell you if the console is good.
MEh none of those systems would exist if it weren’t for the original NES. Mario, zelda, I remember people losing their jobs over that game. That was the original “crack” game. However, the best system… so far… is the PS2 it had the most games that were elite and cutting edge. Which the funny thing is… We keep debating the games on the systems… not the systems themselves. Which just goes to show that the games make the system not the other way around. (However it does help.. look at nintendo now… the only games they have are made in house because the system isn’t good enough to keep up with the big boys and multi-platform games.)
I still play my SNES, Castlevania 4 ROCKs!
I’m still haven’t played “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island”, and my gaming life will not be complete until I do.
Between the playstation and the snes (both for the capabilities of the platform for the day and the quality of the titles released) I would have a tough time choosing. They both have a plethora of titles that I still play, along with an excellent ability to bring the extremely varied game-styles to life.
They were both released at a time of major technological innovations allowing for far more than what came before them. The newest consoles are just minor improvements of what these two consoles built (the 360 and PS3 simply do them with “better graphics”).
Then again…I’ve been saying as much for a while now. While the visual quality (and in some cases the audio quality as well) of current games have been increasing…very little else has been truly improved upon. Take any style of game out there today and take an honest look at what is so truly “new and different” from previous games.
It’s sad. The industry has become ripe with the same sort of “meh” inspiring re-invention that brought the gaming industry to its knees over twenty years ago.
That photo looks like optimus prime’s face.
I’d have to agree, SNES is pretty much the best ever. I hated the genesis, I don’t know why.
I greatly preferred the Genesis over the SNES. Sure the SNES may have had a few of the Best games, but the overall library for the Genesis was far superior.
Genesis was my fave I think. I didn’t own a SNES until I could get one at a pawn shop for cheap. I think Genesis always kicked ass with more adult oriented titles over the weaker versions on SNES like the Mortal Kombat stuff. I truly laughed at anyone who had bought that crap for there SNES. One giant WTF?
