Next time I go to a Dodger/Giants game in LA with my Giants gear, I’m taking this guy. Made my day.

Amazing story and makes me think of a quote I remember from GTA4 of all things.

“War is were the young and stupid are tricked into killing each other by the old and bitter.”

  2. Tom Merritt

This stopped me cold during me pell-mell prep before TNT. Samsung Galaxy Tab’s going to seem awfully insignififcant for a bit after watching this. But thanks for passing it along man.

  3. Scott (not that Scott)

    Thank you Scott.

  4. Tim

… why in the world would you have Giants gear? They’re the devil

  5. WIlliam Doran

Hard not to get choked up after a story like that…

  6. Moobie

    Beautiful! :-)

  7. Tolwyn

2 piss-poor soldiers. First of all, the guy disobeyed a direct order and derilection of duty, not to mention putting his platoon in harms way. And for the German soldier, equally didn’t do his duty.

War’s hell, kids, but when you’re in the armed forces, you have a JOB to do, and this isn’t one of them.

  8. Tolwyn

If all of our soldiers had this touchy-feely attitude, we’d be speaking German or Japanese. Think about it.

  9. Kyle Voltti

    wow Tolwyn…… wow… I mean Really?… Wow…..

here’s another video with the guy a bit more detail on the story

    And Tolwyn….. wow…. I can’t come up with words

  10. Twiggy

I don’t think Tolwyn has ever learned the meaning of Humanity. Perhaps studied up on trolling, though.

  11. Jaramide

Well at the risk of feeding the troll. I’d rather think that if all soldiers were like him maybe we wouldn’t have wars in the first place.

  12. TJ

    WOW, that’s an amazing story.

  13. Tolwyn

I could have worded my post/opinion much better, but humanity has no place in the military. That’s why it’s military. And especially in WW2. Maybe some revisionist history is killing the perception of what it was like, but it was brutal, and the men fighting on our side had to be brutal too. Follow orders, do you job. This story could have easily ended up with every single man in his platoon dead because of his “inspired” humanity in a place where none should be.

    • Dutch JaFO

“I was only following orders ” … that’s what Hitler’s men also said.

  14. Tolwyn

So although a touching story, I agree, it could have easily been a tragedy. To glorify the behavior seems very foreign to me. I apologize for the way I worded my first post… Carry on.

    • Dutch JaFO

but if we didn’t glorify the war then there’d be no one stupid enough to want to start one …

      • Tolwyn

War has formed this country (the US), otherwise, we’d still be in Europe. Nothing of Importance Happened today… Some king said that in 1776.

Kids that don’t know their history are ignorant.

      • Tolwyn

Find a WW2 vet somewhere in your town and explain to him your perspective. Report back.

      • Dutch JaFO

        Perspective ?

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
        Pro patria mori.
        - Wilfred Owen (WW 1 veteran and poet)

  15. Tolwyn

There are thousands of quotes of the nessessity of war. WW1 was the last war… until WW2 occured (to end all wars), then Korea, Vietnam, etc. ad INFINITUM.
From the time before JESUS there has been, and ever shall be war, wrath, bloodshed.
And heretofor there will always be.
Unblind your eyes to the necessity of evil that frees mankind for we have not the need for weak men in the time of ultimate need.

  16. matty peeps

    that was beautiful…what a guy

  17. Robin Vick aka Hordecurious

Name of that song is Lili Marlene. We used to have to sing it in History class in college.

  18. Soldiermadness

That just made me burst into tears… I would have done the same thing if I was him. There are some things more powerful and meaningful than surviving. Music is one of them.

  19. Secretary

“Piss-poor soldier”? I think that comment is disrespectful and in really bad taste. Did you not see the medals on his chest? Silver star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air Medals and a Presidential Unit Citation. They don’t just hand these out to any “piss-poor” soldiers. The man is a genuine war hero and he has more than earned the respect and gratitude from us.

    • Tolwyn

      Yeah, you read that right.
Sorry, I take a page out of Brig. General Robin Olds book on this one. Look it up and learn something.
