Ok…here’s the deal. For a while now I have wanted to do this project. But it needs a flash animator, or any kind of animator, who is fast, talented, and has a good sense of timing and visual comedy. What we want do to is this:

We will chunk out segments of the ExtraLife Radio Show, say 2 to 4 minutes in length, and then have the animator take that audio and create a short film out of it. But its not simply just animating characters posing as us and talking. The idea could include some of that…but the result would look more like this. You would cut away to show a funny visual representation of what is being said. In other words, if we are talking about Dean Cain, or Shortround, or some crappy B-movie, you would create funny little cut-aways that would match what we are saying, etc.

There was a show on Comedy Central called, “Shorties watching shorties” that did this sort of thing, only they used the soundtrack of someone’s standup routine. Does this all make sense? We want REALLY good work, someone who has actual talent in the area of animation. Someone who is good enough that these could eventually be compiled into DVD’s and such other things. We know the audio is good…now we just need a visual genius to make life grand.

If you want to give this a shot, here is a snippet of audio from the show that you can animate around. We will watch EVERYTHING we get, but not sure we will repy to everyone. And if something is pretty good, even if its not the one we choose, we will still show this stuff. We will give ALL donations connected with the shorts, and ton of exposure to the guy who does this for us. (As well as a guest chair on ELR.)

I personally can’t animate, simply because I lack the software to do so. I can, however, say that http://doogtoons.com/ is extremely adept at animation.

  2. Aliasanimator

Awesome, I’m going to give it a shot.

  3. Rick

woo. Im sure you asked ages ago about this, and I replyed saying me and a mate wouldnt mind having a go

  4. Reric

Does it have to be Flash? Could we do up an animated short in some other format and submit it via mpeg or such?

  5. Scott

Certainly! The format is not the big thing…MPEG is perfect…which would be cool since we can get it on YouTube as well.

  6. Reric

one more question, what is the deadline for submissions?

  7. Scott

hmmm…good question. I would love to have it in the next few days if possible, but I am flexible.

  8. Reric

k, well I asked because i’m currently visiting family for 4th of july weekend, but im hopeful that i can get back to my computer and crank some work out by midweek

  9. Scott

no rush…I will probably not do any sort of picking for more than a week or so.

  10. meekar

Scott, are you looking for any specific art style?

  11. Shaymus22

Yeah, meekar asks a good question. What if my art style is for me to ask you to close your eyes and imagine what it would be like if I had expensive software like Imageready and Flash? It works on four-year-olds, why not podcaster webcomic artists from Utah?

  12. Len

Dude. If you find someone good, send em my way. I have another project that I’ve been looking for a good animator for.

  13. Jon

Yeah I was about to say that the guys at doogtoons do exactly this–they animate an ‘interview’ with the ask a ninja guy or animate a cartoon version for their Nick and Haig cartoons.

  14. Mattyuk

Oh man I wish I cud animate!!!

So what your saying is, at the end of the show the animation starts. Great idea.

  15. Marcus

I would love to give it a try but you want it in a couple days?! A quality 3 minute animation takes a great deal of time. How about a 30 second clip? That would be more reasonable.

  16. Scott

I wont make any decisions for a good week or more, so no big rush.

  17. Sigma_Crow

Scott, you are turning My Extra Life into a multimedia extravaganza.

  18. Joshua

    ‘An’ animator… and an editor.
    I could be your editor/proofreader.

  19. Mark Larson

Too late, Josh. I’ve bugged Scott about his editing skills since we were teenagers. :)

I guess those of us that can’t create, edit. :)
