According to these guys, it is just what Blizz plans to announce this month. (If it’s true, I won’t lie to you…I will play that game.)

although this does sound flipping awesome I would much rather have StarCraft 2. If you think I’m stupid for wanting that, thats ok. But I need something newer than Frozen Throne to play all day.

    LONG LIVE DOTA!!!

  2. Kainti

Eh, Science Fiction. The genre hasn’t really…been…good. I enjoyed Star Wars Galaxies…trials. Never played it for more then that.

But hey, it’s blizzard. They poop gold. Who knows?

  3. Felix

I would have liked a RTS more. StarCraft hasn’t even been 3D before… MMO is fine too, though

  4. Rock Strongo

    yeah……right.

    Thes don’t even cite sources…

  5. NeuroMan42

Would love another Starcraft game… but would love a great Sci-Fi MMO which the genre is seriously lacking.

  6. MacAoidh

I very disappointed nobody is putting 1 and 1 together…
It could very likely be an rtsmmo! I have been speculating this for a while and it seems more plausible as we get nearing to the announcement.
    What we know:
    - We know they are working on a next generation MMO, suggesting it will be wildly different from any past MMOs and they have said they wanted to break free from WoW’s traditional style.
    - There are rumblings of fundamental changes with Starcraft.
    - They are announcing it in Korea. This is KEY, if they announce world of starcraft at this Starcraft tournament after building up a new rts, they WILL be riots :) .
    - And Blizzard aint stupid, but rather ridiculously ingenius.

Watch this space. This is pure speculation but I would put money on it being a RTSMMOG. If it is I really can’t wait to see how it works… – and to say ‘I told ya so’ ;)

RTSMMO? That sounds intriguing. I’m not quite sure how that would work, but if someone could figure a way it would be Blizzard.
A solid FPSMMO (MMOPWFPS) I think could suit the franchise. But then again, Blizzard does not have any experience in FPS-making.

Somehow i don’t think it’ll work out too well, think of the zerg units, in the RTS they drown the opponents by swarming, i don’t see how someone playing as a zergling is going to kill anyone, they’ll need to be in a HUGE raid.

Doing a StarCraft MMO at this stage doesn’t sound like a very smart move. It would cannibalize WOW sales at a time when WOW is still going strong. It should be introduced when WOW shows signs of waning. Koreans love the StarCraft RTS. Doesn’t it make more sense to announce a sequel there. I think MacAoidh’s idea is very possible. Actually MMORTSes have been around for a while, google it and see for yourself. They haven’t taken off, Blizzard could be the ones who can really make it work. It would be truly something new instead of a WOW clone.

MMO can go good with RTS, look at shattered galaxy

  11. C-H

With all the years they’ve been working on StarCraft Ghost I pooh pooh on your non FPS statement

  12. Dan G

Blizz has actually denied that they would be making a Starcraft MMO for some time… be interesting to see what this really is.

  13. brnz

Um.. last thing I heard last year was Blizz trashed it due to the wild popularity of WoW. Ghost would have been an awesome Sci-Fi MMO, but they were worried that they wouldn’t A) Have the resources to do it right. B) Steal from their own subs.

I won’t hold my breathe. (But I have REAL sources that work at both Blizzard (Fertbert) and SOE (Speedman) – so if I get some tidbit to share I will)

  14. NeuroMan42

RTSMMOG… yeah, I want to play a gas collector for 4 hours a day.

    *blech*

  15. Scott

How would a SC MMO cannibalize the WoW market? There are plenty of people out there that would much rather play a SciFi MMO and are not really into the fantasy thing.

  16. kylekrane

a starcraft MMORTS looks like the most likely scenario. i mean look at dream lords, thats an awesome MMORTS.

  17. Ace N.

An MMO in place of an RTS would really make me sick. Blizzard would just be alienating all of their fans that enjoyed their RTS’s, and they’d basically be saying “MMO’s make a lot more money, screw the fans!”

But of course, all of this is moot if Starcraft 2 comes out.

  18. Propane

Starcraft MMO? I freaking hope not! How to you balance a Zergling to a Zealot? You can’t.

    StarCraft 2 imo

  19. Ted

Lots of speculation. . .but 2 things are certain of a new game from Blizzard:
    1. It will be very good.
    2. It will be years before we see it on the shelves.

  20. Luminouscow

IMO, Blizzard isn’t good at innovating. They’re good at seeing what others have done and taking it to an all new level. That’s Blizzard’s forte. I’m on the fence until I hear from Blizz what they’re doing.

  21. NeuroMan42

SC2 would be fine with me, but I would still love to play a Zerg as they were my favorite race in the game. There is even a new novel too to expands the story AFTER the games… I wonder if this leads to the second half?

  22. Rezlow

Blizzard milking a franchise?!? Say it isn’t so!

  23. Greth

Rezlow … Milking? Starcraft – 2 not “Final Starcraft XV” or something :P

Rumours are rumours … With the upcoming announcement in Korea I’ve heard a lot of things … I think it’s almost sad to see an actual gaming website making up a hoax like this …

I’ve got a confirmed report from Blizzard HQ that SC2 will actually be ‘Spore’ set in the Starcraft Universe.
Players will begin as a single unit of a race. Combining RTS and FPS a player will climb the ranks of his race, eventually becoming capable of commanding his own army!

    (That’s actually not a bad idea :O …. (c) Greth 2007 )

If they’re just announcing it now, then it’s probably several years from release. By the time it comes out, WoW may very well be waning. Even if it comes out much sooner than that, I doubt it would have a major impact on their bottom line. A large number of players will more than likely maintain subscriptions to both, they’ll get new customers who are interested in a scifi mmo, and they’ll get customers like me back that don’t play WoW anymore. Sure, there will be people that leave WoW in favor of a Starcraft mmo, but that will still be cash in Blizzard’s pocket.

If it is an mmo, though, I think the idea of some sort of mmorts is much more likely than an rpg. Hmm. Of course, they could set up some sort of system where if you get a high enough level, you can roll up a Zerg colony of your own and start taking over territory with it. Or they could do what LotRO did and allow you to play high level evil characters in war torn areas.
