After years in development limbo, the “Trek”-themed massively multiplayer online game will engage.
That’s according to game developer Cryptic Studios Inc., which recently announced it had secured the rights to develop and publish “Star Trek Online” from CBS Consumer Products after now-defunct Perpetual Entertainment set the besieged project to kill.
As pumped as I would be for a game like this, I have my doubts. Read the whole thing.

they showing a video of its current state tomorrow on there official website http://www.startrekonline.com/
Sofar i did not like there style where they going, looks like star trek armada graphics, space doesn’t look as great in like say eve-online, hope they will change it or start all over again might not be a bad idea.
It would probably be okay so long as they don’t have “Disposable Ensign” or “Disposable Red Shirt” as a character class.
All I can say is, BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!
Killed by world of starcraft… =(
I like the concept, but I would rather see “Star Trek meets Oblivion” as a concept. Give me a massively single player experience. I’d even pay for expansion like the Oblivion model. IMHO there has yet to be a really good Star Trek video game, and I would rather see that than a really average MMORPG which I wouldn’t likely buy a subscription too anyway. I mean, I managed to stay out of WoW… This will be easy.
I’d like an MMORPG where you can get to be any of William Shatner’s characters; Kirk, T.J Hooker, Denny Crane, that guy from the ‘Twighlight Zone’ episode…the list is endless. Believe me, It’s endless.
In the overall scope of things, most Star Trek (single player) games have ranged from bad to average. So my expectations are not very high. MMOs can have even higher expectations than single player games.
@Rosscoe, yeah I would be game for a ‘Shatnertopia’….we could all get the Priceline profession.
Gotta love the Shatner (…and I’m a Shaman)
Given how ‘Enterprise’ handled the ‘pre-original ST’ history/universe I have very little faith in a MMO for the Star Trek-universe.
The problem with an IP like Star Trek, it means so many different things to a wide variety of people. When they try to please everyone, they get an unfocused un-fun game that ends up pleasing nobody. On the other hand, when they try pleasing no one and come up with something far removed from existing Star Trek, they end up pleasing no one as well. As much as I love it, if I were a Game Developer, I wouldn’t even touch the Star Trek IP with a 10 foot clown pole. Too many pit-falls.
That being said, I really liked Voyager: Elite Force. Although I’m not fond of Voyager as a series, the game really felt like you were part of an episode and it was the closest I’ve seen a game recreate the Star Trek essence.
After watching the trailer one thing comes to mind, that there is a large margin for suckage with this game. Just look at the normal track record for the majority of Trek games. I wonder if it will be like all Cryptic games… after 6 months your bored out of your skull. The only good Trek is classic.
Have to agree with that after looking at the trailer. There seems like some potential, but there was too much that didn’t look like Trek. Even some of the ships didn’t look right. I’d like to hope that the gameplay is good, but I can’t be that optimistic. I don’t think Blizzard has anything to worry about.
The real question though is whether it’ll be any good, unlike the Star Wars game franchise when it comes to Star Trek most of the games they’ve made are pretty close to crap. Indeed, I don’t honestly think they’ve ever made a great Star Trek game. They’ve made some very good one’s, but never a great one. So we’ll see.
What’s a 10 foot clown pole?
I don’t know. I typically hold my game play to one game at a time. I’m a causal WoW player but a huge STNG fan. I’d cancel my Wow subscription to play this. At least for a couple of months anyway. And if it sucks…. Then it sucks and I go back to WoW.
yawn… oh sorry there is another game coming out and it is an MMO…good luck I say.
@Bearbutt: it’s like a 10 foot pole, only it belongs to a clown.
star Trek is a vast universe… i doubt any game will ever big enough for it.
