This is interesting and insightful, indeed.

    And I laughed. Several times.

For the right reasons, mind you.

  2. hobson1975

    That is pretty amazing!

  3. Eric

It shows how little that guy knows to think that the reverend is somehow unique. (Idiot.)

    • Beantwig

If you look up the history of those two, Clary ended up becoming an anti-racism preacher and became close friends with the reverend. So, yeah, of course that guy is always going to stand out in his stories as being a unique individual– Clary is recounting the tales of his history with an old friend.

  4. Atomic

Eric, it was unique enough that in spite of all the other people he victimized (and your naive if you believe there were not others) this one reverend’s response made an impression on him.

    • Eric

So, Atomic, what are you saying? What I said is that it proves this guy’s even more of an idiot for being somehow impressed with this one man who’s no different than any of us out there. It shows how this guy believed that the KKK was some elite organization when it actually proves the exact opposite when ordinary people can bring them low.

      • Atomic

I’m saying that type of character is unique and you are very blessed if you do not know otherwise.

      • DrOswald

He never said the KKK was elite in the video, but the fact is that their tactics did inspire fear. The KKK knew what they were doing, even if it was an evil organization. The point is that the KKK, with all their experience in creating terror and hatred, were defeated by one man who used his brain instead of responding with more hatred. This situation is not unique, and he never said or implied it was. It is an anecdotal example of how hatred can be defeated by intelligence and kindness.

I personally question how you can not be impressed Reverend Wade Watts. It is a very rare individual who is able to respond with kindness in the face of hatred and violence. I wish I could say that I am a good enough person to respond similarly, but I cannot honestly say that I would.

      • The_Julian

So you’re saying that if he KKK came to your house, brutalized your property, burned crosses on your front lawn, and did everything in their power to make your life a living hell, you would respond in kindness and caring towards its leader? I’m surprised there’s anyone who would act that way let alone the individual reverend.

That is truly great. This guy probably didn’t have a change of heart about his “values” but it made him think a little. Maybe that’s how it starts.

  6. Jason

It would be interesting to see what that same preacher tells his congregation about homosexuals. Yeah, I just went there.

    • Atomic

How would that be relevant to this discussion?

      • jackson

yeah i agree with atomic….not relevant

    • Biff

Because he’s now a Christian now, right? So that automatically makes him a homo basher.

    • DrOswald

What I don’t get is why you went there. You imply that he is encouraging hate crimes against homosexuals without any basis at all. What you should have done is actually compared the issues and stated how we can learn from past civil right movements and apply them to the current situation. Instead you encourage hate between religious groups and homosexuals. You are not the champion of homosexuals with that comment. You are detracting from the cause through further hate mongering.

I hate double standards. Why is it ok for you to hate on Christians? Why is it ok for you to stereotype and make offensive blanket statements against this religious group?

    • DrOswald

Also, had you bothered to check, Johnny Lee Clary’s stance on the issue of homosexuality is that Christians cannot accept homosexuality as a correct lifestyle, but hatred toward homosexuals cannot be justified. He states that “Most people in society look upon homosexuals with disdain and disgust. It is important that we do not do that.” He is sticking to his religious convictions without hate mongering. As admirable a stance as anyone could possibly expect.

That, sir, is what that same preacher tells his congregation about homosexuals.

  7. applejuicefool

Amazing to me how some people are condemning Clary here. I think it’s great that this preacher made such an impact on him that he changed his tune and now is brave enough to come forward and tell his story and admit his former stupidity. Good stuff.

  8. Kara

And all these comments prove why you can’t have a good/civil dialogue about anything serious these days.

Take the message to heart -> Kindness defeats Hatred – and move on.

    • Spam

It’s more like Kindness BEFRIENDS Hatred…with a smile.

  9. Nakoma

This is all sorts of awesome… thanks, Scott.
