This is a pretty interesting and down to earth article that had to happen following E3. Well worth the look!
It was a GREAT article, and it really shows how much smoke is blown up our whoopsie-daisies. I personally have always loved Nintendo, and I have NEVER been disappointed in them. I really liked how at least THEY did not choke us with Smoke and blind us with Mirrors.
What is interesting is I had forgotten about most of that pre-2000 stuff and this article has some great examples of still un-answered promises.
I also completely forgot about it too. It just goes to show the Smoke blowing that goes on at the E3 Shows. Hell, I remember the Sega Genesis console box. There were ACTUAL pics of games on the box that NEVER EVER came out in the entire life of the console.
Um, alot of that info was inaccurate or misleading. While there is ALOT of “smoke and mirrors” at E3, let’s call it how it was. Starting from the top, MS said there system supported HDTV resolutions… and some games did. They never said it was standard like the XBOX360. Let’s face it, support for a feature and developers utilizing the feature are two different matters that everyone should be aware of for any console launch. This is the same for MMOs on the XBOX utilizing the HD. This is also the same for graphics in ANY console. Just because a console can DO something doesn’t mean the developers won’t sacrifice that for something else that has to do with gameplay. You ended up seeing the best graphics in the smallest of worlds, like fighting games. (DOA3, anyone?)
Also, The graphics chip in the XBOX was not just a Geforce 3 but in fact was a mix between a Geforce 4 and a Geforce 3.
Console makers do this all the time, but it’s partially the viewers fault for not understanding the context. If you want to know what the next-gen games will really look like, wait until you actually SEE the next-gen games. There are videos and pictures of such games already, though some don’t seem to utilize the power of the consoles full yet.
