Not a huge Guy Richie fan, but it seems like his style might be an interesting mix with the classic story and characters of the Holmes stories. And maybe, finally, I can erase the image of Data and Lavar Burton running around in these roles.

I remember seeing some pictures and reading about this a while ago, and I was a bit apprehensive about Downey Jr. playing as Sherlock Holmes, as well as the more action oriented theme. But, after seeing this trailer, it seems like this will be a very good retelling of one of my favorite book series, and I am very much looking forward to seeing it. Are you a Holmes fan, Scott?
I wonder if Doyle’s butt hurts a bit.
The last part was the best. lawl!
Running around like this?

OK, from all I can see it’s a total bastardization of what Sherlocke Holmes is meant to be. But, that being said, it looks awesome!
I always think of Young Sherlock Holmes, when I get reminded of the character. Data and Jorde running around doesn’t come anywhere into my mind… until you just said so Scott.. damn you, Professor Moriarty!
I have to agree with Josh here – this simply isn’t what Sherlock Holmes is meant to be. Holmes was all about deduction and reason over brute force. The intellectual over the physical.
As a light-hearted popcorn-action movie, it’s probably going to be entertaining – but as a depiction of Sherlock Holmes, it sadly looks like crap.
Holmes is one of those things where previous experience will sour the experience for me I fear. Most of the time reimaginings or movie adaptations don’t bother me (see LOTR or the new Trek for examples) but my dear Watson it was elementary (school) where I first learned about Holmes. I observed his persona carefully and as such any deviations will cause me to suspect that we are dealing with an imposter.
It does look really good. I always the Holmes stories dealing with the occult the best.
Jeremy Brett was, and is still, the definitive Sherlock Holmes. Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes remains the most faithful representation that I’ve ever seen, better even than Basil Rathbone, which I honestly never thought was that good.
That said, this looks like a fun movie, just nothing like the REAL Conan Doyle stories.
Trailers are always more action orientated so lets not asses it solely on that. Also pretty much all other attempt at making a SH movie have been bastardizations themselves, though instead of being over the top they have been cartoony with Watson for some reason being a dumb, short and fat guy. Juxtaposed with Holmes who would be shown as a perfect (but eccentric) gentlemen who is always correct in his assessment… instead of the cocaine abusing, violin playing, not clever as his older brother, amateur boxer, sleep until noon, loveable weirdo he actually is in the books. I do not see a deer hunters hat and as always Lestrade seems to be characterized as a prick … So yeah it wont be perfect BUT if ya haven’t actually read Holmes do not judge the movie based on pictures and cartoon shows. Sure they are making alterations but not as many as we normally see, these just stick out because we rarely see changes to the character in this direction.
In short there isn’t a lot of room for deduction in a trailer AND Holmes was a violin playing, amateur boxing arrogant magnificent bastard. And I’m sure he will still be portrayed as a Detective 1st and foremost. Also it seems like they are giving Watson his dignity back, which is nice.
TNG has ruined Sherlock Holmes for me. Now when ever I hear or read the words “Sherlock Holmes”, I instantly think Data & Picard on the holodeck.
I’m sure plenty of “hard core” Sherlock Holmes fans will come out of the woodwork decrying this movie as an abomination. Personally, I loved the Sherlock Holmes books as a kid and have enjoyed the various incarnations and re-tellings. This movie looks awesome. In fact the one thing I hate about it is that we’ll have to wait until Christmas to see it.
So now we have Tony Stark and… hmmm Errol Flynn i guess, in the roles instead
Guy Ritchie doing a Sherlock-movie of all people … it’ll be British alright.
It looks interesting, but it’s not Sherlock Holmes as Jeremy Brett played him.
Then again … a slightly younger version the duo instead of the grandpa Holmes & Uncle Watson doesn’t have to be a bad idea.
It doesn’t look very classic Victorian era to me however, it’s a bit more like Wild Wild West with a British detective duo instead of a cowboy & inventor as the major characters.
ps : what about a zombie Holmes&Watson ?
I am for just about anything with Downey Jr. in it. I had heard that this is one of two Holmes movies being made right now, and that they are both in a frantic race to get it to the screen first.
I don’t see what the fuss is about re imaginings. If its a bad re imagining I still have the complete series on my shelf to comfort me. I will enjoy this movie since I do most of Guy Ritchie’s movies, and have no expectation of it being an accurate portrayal of any of the characters.
And as long as you only count Doyle’s Sherlock stories as canon. Sherlock never said “Elementary dear Watson!”
Really I mean if you want to do a more “updated” Sherlock Holmes you have to look at House M.D.
But this doesnt look or feel like Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is an addict and a genious detective that is bored and needs either drugs or interesting cases (very much like House which is based on Holmes).

My favorite Holmes movie is Murder by Decree, from 1978, starring Christopher Plummer as Holmes, and James Mason as Watson. Though the movie isn’t based on a tale written by Doyle, it does involve Jack the Ripper, and is a great addition to the Holmes legacy.
For me the three best Holmes’ have been Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, and Chris Plummer. As much as I love Downey, I don’t see him as a good fit for Holmes. This looks like a fun movie, but not a Holmes movie.
TRUKK NOT MUNKEY! And OMG, did you see they replaced Brosnan with Daniel Craig!!!1!
….yeah. Let’s see a Holmes who could actually survive Reichenbach, for once. Let’s see a Holmes who knows bartitsu, the gentleman’s MMA. Let’s see a Holmes whose methods are unconventional but effective, whose mind is a one-man CSI team, whose skills are paid at top dollar.
