You have to be freaking kidding me.

“What we love about this is we hopefully get the best of both worlds,” Mr. Howe said. “We’ll get the heritage and the track record of success, and we’ll build off of that to build a broader, more open and accessible and relatable and human-friendly brand.”

Bleh!

I don’t know if this is stupid because they’re copying apple or because its just stupid.

  2. Cyberwasteland

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! sYfY! HAHAHAHHAHA! *snort*

    What are they thinking?

    Horrible name IMO.

  3. Metal_Link

    It’s just stupid. It’s like they’re going with a more kid-friendly image.

  4. Allen Stergess

Good lord! Expect to see reality tv shows on this station soon. What total and utter crap!

  5. G. D. Curry

Well, if they go through with this at least I won’t need to hear my friend’s wife call it “skiff-ee” anymore. Still, it’s pretty stupid and will alienate their core demo.

  6. Murpdjs

How dumb is this. It’s still the same phonetically >.<

I think Stir Fry when I see the logo now!

  7. koko

it’s really cool for us polish readers- syfy is plural for a word meaning “junk” or “crap”

  8. Tom Silk

For some reason I see that and want to pronounce it so that it rhymes with “Jiffy.”

  9. Shaymus22

“SciFi Channel Aims to Shed Geek Viewership Through Removal of Everything Cool and Terrible Scheduling and Hiatuses”

  10. Sherri

Please tell me this is an early April Fool’s joke, like the Microsoft buying Dell thing. :-/

  11. Ceiynt

They want to lose their geeky image? They are the Sci-Fi channel, a genre of which partly requires geek. I don’t really see the tween crowd going for it, unless of course, they start showing the Twilight movie. Sci-fi = robots. Robots have been proven time and again to be not human friendly. Bah to them, bah to this new exec person.

  12. Edge

I don’t care what they call themselves as long as they still play twilight zone, crappy Stan Lee movies, and Stargate “X” all the time.

  13. Masterwabbit

Allen: *Start* seeing Reality TV on that station? By any chance have you heard of “Who wants to be a Superhero?”

  14. PHUQT

All because NBC wants a name they can own.

  15. enrique

    Hey, SyFy:

    uSuk

LOL. They need to stop the denial and embrace the geekdom.

  16. Hawk

They tried to get away from their geeky image, but I see it as more geeky because when I look at that logo, I think “The integral of y*f(y)”.

  17. Grant

Ugh. They need to re-think this idea.

  18. FiendishThingy

I suppose this means more nights of pro wrestling.

  19. Atlanta Jones

Utter nonsense. Scifi is apparently going the way of other networks like MTV, AMC, etc where they are abandoning their original, core focus in order to cater to the dumb masses.

Oh well, now that BSG is ending, I don’t have much need for them anymore anyway.

  20. Land_Knight

SYFy, short for syphilis, a horrible alienating social disease that includes sores (talk to fans after they cancel some great shows), rashes (recieed from watching such thrilling hits as “Vampires Eat Manhattin” and Jello Mold”) and leads to brain damage (ECW ftw?) dementia (Sci Fi is being watched by too many geeks… lets fix that) and Death (Hey Kids, lets watch Spike instead)

Really guys? Am I getting too old to remember the days when Mtv Played music? Or when SciFi played… Science Fiction? We’re Here, We’re Geeks, Get Over It!

  21. Davad

Meh. After Battlestar wraps up this Friday, it’s not like I will have any reason to watch on this channel anyway. Instead of worrying about the name of the channel, why don’t they worry about the quality of the “movies” they produce on it.

  22. JT

As a designer, honestly, this logo is about 150 million times better than their existing one. The name change is a little hokey, sure.. But its an attractive mark.. miles beyond the 90’s swoosh saturn planet (how obvious is that for scifi? its cheesy as hell) with the awkward type.

I suppose I’m in the minority here in being optimistic that this could actually improve the channel if they extend this level of design across the board.

But yes, I would be disappointed if the channel became too watered-down.. to kid-centric. I’m with the majority there.

  23. Darrell

Most of what they create is and has always been total crap, so I’ll have no problem calling them “Siffy” from now on and continuing to not watch them.

  24. Josh G

@Allen Stergess, they already do. WCG Ultimate Gamer

  25. McLovin

After Friday’s BSG finale I’ll have no reason to ever tune to that channel anyway…

  26. Punkrawk Bbob

Wow. It’s not often you can pin-point the day a brand dies.

  27. q3c

In Polish “Syfy” is a plural of the word “Syf” meaning “stench, dump, crap”. Also used as “zit”.

Besides that, I dig the new look, but the new spelling of SciFi is just a disaster.

  28. q3c

Now I am gonna turn up my stereo and listen to some music in HyFy.

  29. oldscool

I worry that new viewers may pronounce it “Siffie” in stead of “Sigh Figh”?

  30. Icesnake

Funny, I stopped watching when they started cramming eh schedule with non-SF crap.

This is what happens when Marketing MBAs take over running… Well, anything. Come the Revolution, first the lawyers, then the Marketing MBAs!

  31. ScottyD

Another reason for me to stop watching their channel after BSG is over.

  32. CJMack

    Rejected taglines:

SyFy – The SciFi Channel. Only cheaper.

SyFy – Where Dean Cain lives forever.

    SyFy – SpikeTV + Highlander 2.

  33. Erich the Mad Bassist

Oh man, tell me this is a joke!
    .
    *looks*
    .
I’ve never regretted dropping cable in 1999.
    .
“…a broader, more open and accessible and relatable and human-friendly brand.” – perhaps, if they’re aiming for the crowd I’ve seen in AOhelL chat rooms and the Yahoo games lobby. They can’t spell either.
    .
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,” – I associate the term with intelligence and literacy. I’m guessing Mr. Brooks the TV historian didn’t grow up reading Asimov, Bradbury, and Clarke. As for women, weren’t they (the average non-geeky women) doing okay when they were showing Quantum Leap all hours of the day, or at least the hours I tried to tune in? I could only take so much of “dropped into yet another life” hell.
    .
Warehouse 13 sounds more like X-Files meets Friday the 13th: The Series, and takes none of the better qualities of each. Then again, I may be a bit prejudiced by the name of the network it’ll run on. :-Þ
    .
This feels like MTV when they became eMpTyV – adding commercials, canceling Headbanger’s Ball without warning, and creating retarded reality shows. SciFi just had their most successful year, and they’re shooting themselves in the foot by insulting their core audience. Then again, if they attract the masses, they may make more money–stupid people are everywhere, and to be successful in this world, one must realize that fact. Perhaps that explains all the infomercials.

  34. zark169

I sure hope he used quotes or rabbit ears when he said ‘track record of success’. Otherwise it’s just complete BS.

Also, ‘Scare Tactics’ was a reality show they did before ‘Superhero’. I can’t think of any other earlier ones, though.

  35. Peruchito

    sigh…

  36. goodmatt

Why don’t they just halt production on “Python 3″ and “Reptile 2″

  37. prion

JT I completely disagree with your designer perspective. The old logo at least says WHAT IT’S ABOUT. This new logo says exactly nothing–it’s not even a real abbreviation.

  38. Rob Dalton

What the hell are they smoking? It’s not like they actually air anything good except for syndicated programming.

  39. tyler

LAME so does this mean more snake, spider and other crap movies

  40. MXC

Doesn’t bother me. Once Battlestar: Galactica ends I’m done with the channel.

  41. Rezlow

When asked what they would be broadcasting now, a spokesperson answer: “Science Fiction mostly… oh and some fantasy… fantasy too. SyFy! We’re new!… sorta.”

  42. Izaak

They want more “human friendly”!? That’s like racism against nerds or something! I’m human too!

  43. Majere

Surely the new tagline should be:
“SyFy- where the marketing department can’t spell!”

  44. Carl

I really expected this to be from The Onion. I knew they were going down hill when they added Wrestling a while back. The terrible movies of the week (I really tried to watch a few of them, and every single time I was mad at the fact I’ll never get that time back.) were bad enough, but at least they [sometimes] were science fiction. But Scare Tactics? And Who Wants to be a Superhero? And ECW? They are watering down their demographic and this will cost them eventually.

  45. Nakoma

That channel became dead to me the day that they cancelled Farscape.

  46. Tolwyn

    Styl Shyt.

  47. Peruchito

and they wonder why people torrent…

  48. mercator

    SyFy: Youthenizing America!

Why not stick two bad taglines together and hope it works.

The way they are putting the axe to good shows, they could go with HzBn or BkRpt

  49. Emily

    This is bullcrap…

  50. Brian M.

    @Izaak
That’s the first thing i thought of too. They’re insulting their main demographic, but like others said after Battlestar Galactica i do not see a reason to tune in anymore. Until Caprica maybe, unless it’s crap. I’m hoping that turns out to be good.
