The main argument supporting movies like this (that unfortunately are crap after crap) is that they aren't supposed to be like the video games. Now I love the idea of expanding any universe with multiple stories, but what you said is 100% right - you have to stay true to the source material or you're just going to piss a lot of fans off, especially when you make a piece of crap movie.
