Escort missions… They suck the worst because you have to rely on what is typically terrible AI. They get stuck, they go aggro and die, or they do something else that causes a mission fail for no other reason than programming.

  2. Ryan C

I hate quick time events more than anything! When I play a game I don’t like to be rushed and pressured… I got work for that.

  3. Brzooza

oh crap, I pick the wrong one… Escort missions – or they porly made or enemis just gangbang you…or its ashley from resident evil 4

  4. DoggySpew

Quiktime events I like as long as it is done in GOW. A QTE should only used as a finishing move as long as it is survivable. Although the final QTE in GOW2 broke that rule, it was an exception. Still like QTE’s.
The collect anything mechanic is absolutely the most cheap way to lengthen a game. That is just lazy game making.

  5. Aroinak

Escort Missions, hands down. And hey, I like stealth! Stealth is my favorite of game types!

  6. DanBowe

I know I’m in the extreme minority, but the Gears of War style of mechanic of third person that you HAVE TO move the camera, and doesn’t just keep it over your sholder. Ruined RE5 and Ghostbusters for me. A mechanic like the one used in inFAMOUS works for me.

  7. Brzooza

I hate stealth when its the ONLY way to pass a level or stage. I like killing thing Punisher style:D

Random Encounters in final fantasy are awesome, why? XP!!!

  8. atlantis1982

It was either escort or stealth missions; I went with stealth. >.>

  9. Acedian

Escort is crap. I am wondering just how much hate there is for Tower Defense. Go play South Park Tower Defense on XBLA (or PS3? Not sure) it at least makes the experience better

    • Rex Hondo

I don’t particularly care for tower defense games, but at least there haven’t been any tower defense mini-games or missions cropping up in games I DO play, so it avoids my wrath for now.

      • JaFO

Unreal 2 had 2 ‘tower defense’-style missions … but I guess you did not play that game ;)

  10. Rex Hondo

If those being escorted weren’t invariably about as smart as a sack of hair, escort missions might not be so completely onerous.
One not mentioned that I absolutely can’t stand is FPS enemies that spawn out of thin air with no warning, usually right behind you. I tend towards a more meticulous play style, trying for safe vantage points, sniping when possible, all of which gets thrown out the window when something could literally jump out of thin air at any time and start gnawing on the back of my head.

    • Davad

There it is. People being escorted are usually really stupid.

  11. binaryspiral

Escort missions – all the way. I hate them with a passion – I’ve stopped playing entire video games because one level is an escort mission. I almost tossed Fallout 3 to the curb for that stupid escort mission – but glad I just sucked it up and finished it.

Most of the time when I’m on an escort mission I want to kill whatever I’m escorting just for being so frickin’ stupid. Yes, please just run into traffic or walk in front of me while I battle this monster…

  12. fantasyh

Escort missions. Also – long missions with no saves at the midpoint. INCREDIBLY annoying.

  13. evirus

I’d like to see more RPGs letting you go back and find new things in older areas, so long as its not just an excuse to add one more quest before the end boss.

  14. TossTheDice

“Go back to old levels to find new secrets.” Anyone else remember the main dungeon in Phantom Hourglass? *shudders*

    • Rex Hondo

That bloody thing went above and beyond simply returning to a new area for new secrets like in a Metroidvania. Not only did you have to go back through the ENTIRE thing more than once, but it was also TIMED. Toss stealth elements in on top of that and it quickly became almost more of a pain than it was worth.

  15. Jakesully

Timed missions are the worst. I’m a perfectionist and I like taking my time and perfectly executing a mission. When I’m under the pressure of time I just get all sloppy!

  16. Shaymus22

Anything like Mirror’s Edge that makes me not only happy that I’m having fun, but happy that I’m playing the game; happy that the game exists. In other words, anything that is so new, surprising, creative, innovative or well done that it makes me happy that I’m studying to be a game designer.

    • Shaymus22

Hahahaha I misread the question and thought that you were asking what our favorites were hahahahaha. Oops, sorry.

  17. Eric

Escort missions: Because nothing says fubar like a trying to protect a helpless, clueless (AI) idiot from hurting themselves. (If possible, I say, “Wait here,” go kill everything, then come back for the moron.)

  18. NeuroMan42

She combat is the best thing, and it is more sluggish then a Vulcan Frost Worm. Away team missions and character missions are simple a freaking joke. Should have made it just be a space sim.

    • NeuroMan42

I meant to say Ship combat is the best thing… LOL.

      • Brian D.

Suuuree you did. :-P But ship combat is supposed to be sluggish and slow.. like a submarine battle.. but you could always have hit your Evasive maneuvers and get that extra boost in speed if you put power to your engines. Helped me get out a few situations so I wouldn’t have to respawn.

I think the game needs a bit more maturing.. I’ll have to see how it is in 6 months after they’ve worked out the “New MMO-Smell.” :-)

  19. Joe

I was excited to try it out in the open beta but after 2 hours, I had no desire to play again. I know that’s not a lot of time to give a game before deciding, but I just didn’t see myself getting hooked.

  20. Lockefox

    I have MMO rules.

    1) Never beta. Never ever PAY to playtest
    2) 6mo Rule: Is the game still relevant/thriving/growing after 6mo? (case and point: conan)
    3) No clones. If I want to play wow, I’ll bend over and sub to wow.

I have my eye on STO, being an EVE player, but my hopes aren’t very high.

  21. LowlyOne

Why do I get the feeling some of these posts are comments about the wrong question/poll?

    • Chuck

:) Lol, Me thinks there was a tiny screw up in how this poll was created…

  22. Eucep

I put in Heaven and Hell, for a D&D Planescape mmo.

  23. Moobie

Where would YOU set a new MMO? :

The past. We need a Western MMO.

  24. DrOswald

    Steampunk 1860’s England.

  25. The 556 lineman

Two words. Run Shadow. Er Shadowrun!!

    • Atomic

Absolutely! Even more interesting if you tie in the Earthdawn mythos.

  26. Charlie

I think a good WWI MMO would be a lot of fun, plus a lot of low end computers could run it because 90% of the time we’d be in a trench!

  27. puglette

the steampunk idea is sort of at work in a f2p called neo steam. i would love a western theme option with steam punk or the mid 1800’s england version. i have tried about a dozen f2p mmo’s and the biggest problem i have with them is movement and camera angle options. it’s difficult to anticipate your enemy when all you can see is your toes.

  28. mooo

    Roman+Greek mythos setting.
There was a mmorpg (gods & heroes?) in making with that scenario a bit ago, but it got cancelled just before beta :<

  29. Rublore

    Firefly universe.

Do I really need to say why?

  30. sbloyd

    I’m shocked it hasn’t happened yet – and I swear I’m not a fanboy:

Harry Potter: The MMO. Take ‘classes’ to get quest chains from various teachers to earn skillups. Spells. Magical creatures. Duels. Duels with magical creatures. And so on.

    • applejuicefool

      Yeah, Wizards 101 :(

      -AJF

  31. dethmunky

I was initially thinking Cyberpunk, like Deus Ex or something. But I have been jonesing for a Mass Effect MMO since playing ME2. The locations are fantastic. I just want to spend days exploring Omega and Illium.

  32. Rurouni

i don’t like the winter olympics. all the good tv shows stop. it sucks :(

  33. Ole C

Am watching LOST now, and its awesome!!!
Only six episodes in, the final season truly is everything I wanted it to be! Absolutely LOVE the direction the creators are heading for. :)
