I have gotten a ton of emails from gay readers and gay friends saying that they LOVED the recent Sulu strip. I have gotten a nearly equal amount of email from straight friends and readers who are totally offended by it.
Can someone, anyone, please explain this to me? It makes no sense at all from here.
EDIT: Closing comments. I did not want to start a firestorm with the subject, though its not really that bad yet, but I feel like it has already run its course, and I’d like your Thursday to be filled with happy thoughts.

People are too afraid of offending someone and getting sued when in reality, the people being made fun of think that it is hilarious. The reason why there is so much racial and sexual tension in our nation is because straight white men and women, hire their straight white lawyers to sue straight white people for poking jokes. They are the only ones that care because they THINK that it might offend someone. (And they can make some money out of whistle blowing.)
Huh….I would’ve thought Trekkies would’ve been more offended than anybody…”Checkov” indeed…
Sounds like the ‘Jew” Family guy eppisode. It was written by a Jew, performed by a Jew and had two Rabbi’s okay it before it came out. It seems that people just like to be offended on behalf of others

Explanation: All the straight mail came from Shatner.
Yeah, that should be on the Stuff White People Like blog (if it’s not already; didn’t actually research this comment…)–being offended on behalf of someone else. It’s something we seem to have trademarked. We make a point of never PERSONALLY being publicly offended by anything (how unhip would That be?), but are scandalized by the thought it happening to anyone–hell, anyTHING else.
Wait a minute….. Sulu is gay?
@Lifeisaglitch
I’m not persoanlly offended by your comment, but I believe Shatner would be. I am now offended by extention of that fact.
Scott, was it the usual ruckus of:
“I’ve never been so offended, I’ll never visit this site again!!!one!!11! My best friend’s, uncle’s, former roommate once met someone who had a pink hat, so you should be thinking about those people before you create such slander!
It used to be about the comics man, what happened to you?”
Makes sense to me. You’re probably hearing from the vocal minority on both ends of the issue. The vast majority of folks are somewhere in the middle but don’t care enough to voice their opinion.
Personally, I am Politically Incorrect and proud of it. If anyone doesn’t like it, he can bite my shiny metal @55.
Uptight straight (or still-in-the-closet) white people are the bane of humanity’s existence. Get hip, or get dead, that’s my motto.
@Dell
Oh yeah but you computers suck!!!

Simple answer, Scott:
Your gay friends saw you touch on a subject that you probably haven’t done before (I don’t know for sure, I’ve never gone through the whole Extralife archive) and were both amused by it, and wanted to encourage you, because they know it’s a touchy subject and wanted you to feel okay about it.
The angry straight people are either insecure about their own sexuality, or just your typical, vocal minority looking for a reason to complain. I’d say the equal amounts of both is simply a coincidence.
I know you like to make sure everyone’s having a good time, but in light of Diary 116, I offer up some wisdom:
“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” — Bill Cosby
i think people will read more into things than are ment by them. scot drew a comic that made him laugh and his intention was to make people laugh, nothing more or less(atleast thats how i understand it). people will always try and make moutains out of mole hills.
though scot remeber your oscar wilde
“the only thing worse than being talked is not being talked about”!
I thought it was great. I am straight as an arrow, and can’t see why anyone would be offended. Heck Sulu would probably say something to the effect that he’s gonna order his hubby that dress for some cosplay later. If anyone saw the Shatner roast, they wouldn’t be offended on Sulu’s behalf. Sulu is out and wants the world to know it.
Shatner might be saddened a little, since it is probably too close to real life for him. He… might… feel like you… saw right… into his… soul… scotty…
I’m gay, I didn’t “LOVE” it (sure did have a laugh at it though! Don’t mistake that!) and offense didn’t even come to my mind. A gay couple (who at the most intimate are standing a good few inches from each other) in a comic is now offensive? Bull.
In my honest opinion, this shouldn’t offend any person, regardless of sexuality. If you’re worried what “The Gays!” think, I doubt anybody gives a damn, if you want the world to be truly “politically correct” then this shouldn’t even cross your mind, think of it as a NORMAL couple, cause thats what it is… a NORMAL (if gay) COUPLE And if you’re a homophobic prick, then just do us a favor and wander onto the M25 with a blindfold on.
Keep it funky now.
It’s kind of like the “white guilt” that goes along with racism I guess.
