While out with the family on this fun little weekend hangout, I grabbed the first two Dark Tower comics from Marvel, and holy crap are they good! I know quite a few of you have been recommending these to me, and being a huge fan of the book series, it made good sense to grab these up. (Special thanks to Meister2021 for the reminder to catch up!)
Which brings up my next point. I am way behind on what is hot right now in comics, and what stuff constitutes a must-read. Post your suggestions.

Hey, I want props for being the one to remind you! (Christopher from Stillwater, OK)
I recommend picking up the current Cap series (to redeem yourself for your previous Nazi-like post about his recent death). Four trades and four issues will give you the run thus far. Also recommend “DMZ,” “Fables” and “100 Bullets” (Vertigo is right now). Finally, Ex Machina (Brian K. Vaughan, Wildstorm) is sweet.
Aside from those, pick a character you love and jump on their book. You’ll figure out what’s going on within a few issues. That’s some great advice I got from iFanboy.com, and they make an excellent comic book podcast. Check them out.
I want props too!
But I wont get props.
What IS it?
We in NZ don’t get much stuff at all =(
(We didn’t even get a GAMECUBE shipped in all the way down in my city! But the videos stores rent the console and games *shrug*)
“Walking Dead” by Robert Kirkman is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ. an ongoing series about a group of survivors living in a zomie apocalypse. it is more about the relationships and humanity of the people than about a few cheap scares and gore(although there is plenty of gore. i recommend just buying the collected volumes. i believe they are up to volume four. trust me after the first few pages of volume one you WILL be hooked.
easy to pick those up still, Kienan?
Oh, that reminds me, I need to go grab the second one.
A quick read over one of those popular websites that covers comics *ahem* will give you a good indication of what is hot and what is not.
That being said, Dark Tower is a VERY popular series right now, so too is Walking Dead (now in trades). If you are a DC fan, the first trade of 52 is coming in a month or two. This has been a huge series. I’m not a fan of Marvel’s Civil War, but it has a lot of big moments – trades currently available.
If you like Hellboy, check out the BPRD trades that are quite good.
I think that pretty much touches on the top items.
Cheers

Oh – and how could I forget Marvel’s Ultimate line? Check out Ultimate Avengers (old now, but still really good), and the Ultimate Spider-Man series.
The images of the comics is backwards…as if it was taken through a mirror
Regarding the mirrored images: I know the iSights on Apple Macs do this by default, and I would assume other camera software too. Either way there should be to turn the mirror option off (I know you can on the Mac).
For someone not into the tights and flights scene at the moment, I would take a look at some of the great trades coming out of the Vertigo line from DC. Definately make sure to check out trades of Y the Last Man and Fables. You can’t go wrong with either one.
Way to be late. Hahaha. I’ve been making sure to get down to my comic shop the day they get the new issues in because I checked the day after the first issue was released and the clerk said it sold out that day.
As for comics, you should check out The Darkness (they’re making a hot looking Xbox360 game based after the comic) that they’re re-doing, starting with The Darkness Level: 0. They’re up to Level: 3 and I’m digging it.
If you like vampires too, you might want to check out 30 Days of Night. Those are all the series I’m currently following. I’m not huge on superheroes, but I like those kind of anti-heroes like Spawn and Estacado in The Darkness.
Hey scott, next time before you take a pic go to: shift+apple+f. It’ll auto flip.
doood…they are soooo gooood!!!!
Y: The Last Man. If you go and buy all the copies now you can catch up as it’s just finishing.
DC: Shadowpact, JSA, JLA, Flash, Detective, Action, Manhunter
Marvel: Runaways, Spider books, Ultimate books, Punisher (MAX series)
Image: Invincible, Walking Dead, The Darkness (actually Top Cow)
Misc indies: The Boys (previously Wildstorm, going to Dynamite), Emissary, Chronicles of Wormwood
To name a few must-reads off of my current pull list.
Bone, Strangers in Paradise, Fables, Crazy Papers, Scott Pilgrim, Malcolm Magic, Flight Anthology
I’m a huge fan of DC’s revamped Blue Beetle, and the unfortunately soon to be canceled Firestorm. Dini (from the animated DC shows) is on Batman right now, and each issue is stand alone, so you can pick up any of his run. In Wildstorm, I can’t recommend Welcome to Tranquility strongly enough.
On the Marvel side of the fence you should look into picking up the recently ended Nextwave. Punisher: War Journal has been pretty strong so far. If you like dark, get Moon Knight. If you want more light hearted fair, go for Spider-Man loves Mary Jane. The target demo is thirteen year old girls, but I’m twenty one and a dude, and I love it to death.
I don’t pick up many indy titles, but Loaded Bible was a two issue mini last year about Jesus having a second coming to fight vampires. It was a blast, and if you can hunt that up, you should.
When was the Firefly comic supposed to be coming out.
That’s on my must have list.
Get everything by Christopher Shy. Silent Leaves is awesome.
Anyone know if you have to have finished the books to get the comics? I’ve only read the Gunslinger then I got distracted by Bernard Cornwell books.
Not really Triarii but imho it would help.
I need to go buy the second one but I’m soo poor. Yes poor enough not to be able to spare the money for a comic.
What, no love for Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men? Volumes 1, 2, and 3 are available as trade paperbacks and i think they’re, what, two issues into the fourth story arch.
it’s not hot right now, but it’s a bi-monthly read at least: SQUEE! and Jonny the Homocidal Maniac! Jhonen Vasquez is GOD!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and V for Vendetta, and look up the old bloom county comics. They are still some of the funniest comics I have ever seen… AND the Death Note manga!
hot damn! I just have to get that, I’ve read the first four of the books and those are pretty nice…
Nevertheless, since topic is hot comics, I have to mention Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles and The Filth. Both of the series has been finished for quite a while, but don’t let that distract you. They are a tad bit different from the mainstream and quite a must read for anyone who likes comics and weird stuff.
NERDS!
bloody hell, that’s a coincidence. I went out too to get these! Still haven’t read them though, but will today.
If you want a good overview of what’s up in comics, just check out IGN.com comic section. If find their reviews are pretty spot on.
Plus check out the review for 300!!!

Y: the last man is a definite must read. If you do read it make sure you start from the first issue.
Vertigo is always good, i always get the latest 100 bullets and DMZ but the rest is amazing as well.
I also recommend The Escapists from dark horse, a 6 part mini about a group of people trying to revive an old golden-age comic based around the escapist from the The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. It’s a nice diversion from all the dark and hero type comics and written by Brian K. Vaughan of Y: the last man fame.
I’ve read comics steady for about 30 years. Here’s a few of my current favorites: Astonishing X-Men, Ultimate Spider-Man (most of the Ultimate books are good), Justice (Alex Ross art alone makes it a must buy), Runaways, Amazing Spider-Man (Strazenski has done a good writing job on this). There are many others (some others above are great like DMZ) but this is a start for you.
I know, I know…everyone’s said this already, but it can’t be said enought.
The Walking Dead.
It’s great.
It’s not about zombies…it’s about people…and that’s why it’s great.
Plus, there are zombies.
Get the trades…mmmmm, trades…..
Ooo, ooo…
And Girls (Image Comics) is pretty good too.
Sorry for the double post.
The first Nextwave trade is out if you’re looking for something new. Really, really hilarious over the top superhero stuff.
I really like some of the new Virgin comics: Snake Woman and Devi for instance are really good. They’re quite dark though but have terrific writing and very in depth plots rooted in Indian/Hindu lore. And I know that John Woo has teamed up with them for a comic called Brothers.
Y THE LAST MAN
Y THE LAST MAN
I am sort of in Scott’s position, behind in the comics, but I will defidently be catching up with all these suggestions. One that has not been mention is WE3. It is about a weapons division that uses runaway house pets as weapons, but get their comupins when they try to decomission them. Good stuff
I agree with kbilly. I am really looking forward to the Firefly comics! Does anyone know when they are due out?
