Got this message from Jack today, and man is it cool! Just a great example of how far we have come with various imaging technologies and such. Check it here!

With this technology we could forge just about any picture we wanted to. I could put George Washington in a room playing poker with Jesus and Bob Dole. Or animate a person saying something from real life, much easier. An example would be something like the Ghostbuster’s video.

Very cool, and I can’t wait for applicaitons of this.

Simply amazing. Imagine the possibilites, not just in film, but in law enforcement. “Artist rendisions” just got a whole lot more accurate.

  3. Benny

    FREAKING AWESOME!

  4. Rodrigo

My god Scott, that just great… Wonder has long would take to make that kinda thing available on The Sims :)

  5. Kainti

    Wicked cool.

  6. Mr Bill

they could do some really interesting stuff with this tech’

  7. Konraden

Chris, I want you to do that. I want you to do that now…Infact, put Bush in there, and make him with a sad face, losing. Totally freaking awesome.

Oh, you can get the software yourself if you want… http://www.facegen.com/

Its pretty amazing.. but I had never really thought of uses past just fooling around with it, or extracting a face from a photo to be used in an animation.

The one thing they SHOULD’VE done they DIDN’T!

    …Make that MonaLisa crack a big-ole toothy SMILE! :)

  10. Mark

    Awesome. Wonderful!

  11. Gil

    WOW!

Next step is animation of the face beyond basic facial expressions and then the posibilities are endless.

BTW the you can pretty much kiss any photo or video evidence goodbye

Think of crime stopping. You get a partial image of someones face at an odd angle you can then make a 3d example.
If you could do this in real time within a game, you can have almost infinate peoples without having the model each one.

Casino’s already use something like this though. When you walk into a casino, 15 pictures are taken of you and run through a computer. If your face matches one on record, They snap another 50 before you get to a machine or a table and security is alerted to your presense.

How do I know this? I was on a list of card counters and “system” users for blackjack/roulette. Whenver I go to the casino, I have 3 guards near me and the pit walks over to watch me play.

I do not cheat, never have and never will. I am extremely lucky and I make the casino nervous.

Example: I would play my system at roulette. if my system begins to fail I walk over to blackjack and make back any money I may have lost and go back to roulette. ALSO I might play blackjack and get a bad feeling for the table and go put money on roulette and then go back to blackjack with winnnings. Anyway. I was talking to one of the guards one day to find out why I was always being followed and he told me they had me on record to be watched. I asked him how I could make them more comfortable and he told me a few ways. “Ask the dealer to make the bets for you”, “Don’t lean over the table.”, “Keep your hands in view at all times”, “Stop running over to blackjack and getting a BJ every time”

I don’t go to the casino very often anymore. They think of me as a cheat and it pisses me off. So I was able to buy a car on winnings. big deal :)

er… sorry for going off on a tangent. My point was the casino’s do bone structure and facial feature checking and have started letting the airports use that technology. They were hesitent because they didn’t want too many people know they were checking in this way.

Wow awesome! Could have some potential for face-recognition too.

  15. Kreachure

    Very impressive. Many applications.

Surveillance video of your favorite celebrity robbing your local drugstore, anyone?

The facegen thing Shenkhar mentioned is something I played with a bit on the run up to Oblivion, thanks to a tip off from Tim Buckley that it was that tech for making your custom character on the PC :d

Doesn’t work quite as well as the one in that vid, theres a lot more manual stuff to do to get it working, and the texturing is a bit shoddy.

    Good fun nontheless, though.

Yeah, the technology isn’t quite there yet. That is, what is commonly known/available. I’d wager that the more secretive sectors have something far far more advanced. Does make you wonder about any “grainy” video you watch on the news that just coincidentally appears when their impact is desired.
