Annnndddd….they dont really look all that great. Not sure about you, but this looks no better than say Ghost Recon on the 360, or any number of other games. Maybe its the constant greenish, brown hue they are going with, but its just not that impressive to me. Flame away if you must, but I thought this was going to be the game that blew our minds and made us HAVE to have the PS3. Anyway, check it!

You should put up the mgs4 gameplay trailer. The thing is, ehhhhhhhh not impressive. It looks like mgs3 with new moves and new camo options. Shiner graphics. In no way it looks GREAT.

  2. Allen

I creamed over it. And I’m not easily impressed.

    Wow a keyboard!!!

  3. pierski

Yeah, I remember something more impressive at E3.

  4. vlad

I must say I was dissapointed with the TGS MGS4 trailer…. it was… like an expansion pack… if you see how the soldiers move, they do move exactly as in metal gear 2 :/

Maybe it’s just me, but with how far games have come, it still seems they have plateaued at the overly polygonal look. I could appreciate a game with more modest surroundings if it had characters with (gasp) more human-like characters, with ROUNDED CORNERS. I saw these shots and couldn’t help but think that the characters just looked like slightly more detailed PS2 upgrades. Blech. I, like many, am going to wait for the Wii, because it will be a FUN system versus one with masturbatory graphics that just can’t meet the real thing.

  6. JaFO

Considering some developers have already said that both platforms wouldn’t be that different to endusers … these shots kind of confirm that.

btw : anyone else consider it somewhat ‘odd’ that snakes webbing (or whatever the name is for those brown/tan belts) appears to be a mere texture ? For a main character he’s suprisingly low detail.

OTOH this may just be a ‘work in progress’ so there is a chance they may add more detail before release.

the GRAAAPPPPPHHHIIICCCSSS!!!! didnt look much better than some 360 games out there. but the thing with the MGS games is, its all about the story. of what i have seen so far, this is the only game i will buy a ps3 for, if the other MGS games are anything to go by this game will rock.

  8. ITAvenger

I will never buy a game that has mechs walking like a woman in high heels. See if you can dig up the trailer and watch the big mech things. There’s something just not right there.

  9. anubis

Scott is wrong thats not the game that is gonna make us want a PS3, this one is:

    http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=13330&type=mov

Dude i wanted a wii untill i saw that video, im sorry wii but you will have to be put on hold cause i need the 250 to save up for the PS3.

  10. Spanked

its all about the gameplay. most games that first drop on a platform arent that great because its new hardware and the developers dont get used to it right off the bat. MGS has always had great gameplay and an interesting story, thats why i love the games. If you ask me, the xbox 360′s graphics dont look that impressive to me, but like i said, no ones really pushed the platform to its limit, itll be the same way with the ps3.

  11. EMPIRE

Scott… I thinkl this looks better than Ghost Recon for Xbox360. But only slightly.
It’s not, in fact, the deal breaker for the PS3.
Actually, if the 85 dollars game rumor is true, then it’s the last nail in PS3′s coffin, which for me had already totally died at the beach.

  12. Scott

i agree with the gameplay argument. But not if its the exact same gameplay. Hope they try some new things.

  13. The Scatman

I watched the trailer, I saw either a lot of bad scripting or a lot of bad AI (and the whole thing was camp…) he shoots a guy in the back with an unsilenced pistol and and his buddy doesn’t even react to it.

Not that impressed with the graphics really, looks like MGS 3.2

More and more I am happy with the route Ninty have choosen, but this killer app doesn’t seem to be giving anything new or blowing as away with graphics as much as it was ment to either.

  14. Rezlow

I was equally unimpressed with WKS… It looked like a fun cartoon to watch, but I didn’t really get a feel for the type of game it was. I guess I’ll have to try it when it releases.

  15. Fantasyoosh

I only says about you that you’re not a big MSG fan. Most of the fans has theyre minds blown in a mile radius.

  16. Shaymus22

    wow…those are some low-poly sandbags!

And Fantasyoosh…all that says about Metal Gear fans is that their standards are pretty low.

  17. rawker

Looks like high res gamecube graphics, with all the low poly models , and high res textures.

  18. The Scatman

That’s what I though, other than some lighting and the Hi res… it doesn’t really look any better than Resident Evil 4.

Fantasyoosh, it is natural for fan boys to be blown away by any sequel… ;) :P

  19. Trentors

You’re right. They are not that impressive. But I think the game will look at lot better in the final build. It you look closely you should notice that there are hardly any shaders and the game looks very clinical. It looks more like a DirectX7 game than a even a PS2 game with leads me to believe theese shots are from a very early build.

    vlad:
Yes the soldiers move the same. They are motion captured. They move like the military advisors have instructed the mocap actors to move. Since the way soldiers are moving/walking are unaffected by the term “next-gen” they SHOULD move the same (or maybe they should fly – thats more next-gen like).

I also move the same like I did 5 years ago, but now in higher resolution ;-)

  20. Jorg Dr.D

i also really hope i dont have to use that stupid little gimicky robot thing that rolls around on one weel. Ughhh metal gear what happend to you?!

Scott you should do a comic about metal gear.

  21. duken

    what scott!!! your CRAZY!!

    those looked insane….

    PS3 FTW!!!

  22. Triarii

There goes my last thread of desire for the ps3. Maybe it’ll look better when it’s moving, but if thats whats supposed to blow the 360 out of the water, then I’m gonna take my chances with the 360 and save myself a hell of a lot of money.

  23. Sebastiaan

Guys guys. it’s an unfair equasion in any way. you should not forget that this is a 1st generation game for the PS3. when the PS2 came out there weren’t a whole lot of games that could even match the graphics that Polyphony were thumping out on the PSX with GT. now. a few years later you look at GT4 and you think “Huh” give the developors a chance to churn out some games after the console is launched and people get a feel for what the machine can really do.

If you don’t want to wait andwould rather have a 360, or a wii, go right ahead. but re-evaluate your opinions come christmas 07 at least. to see if you would still make the choice that you would make this holliday season.

I’m going to buy all three consoles – coz i’m crazy, but not this year for any of them, coz i’m poor.

I’m very much looking forward to getting my paws on all three machines and playing games on them, and as such find it annoying that people keep blasting away after seeing some tech demo months before they have even played a game on the machine.

Maybe the sixAxis is a piece of rubbish, who knows. but at least give it a try. Will everybody who thought that wii was a bad name raise their hand please? and now raise your other hand if you like video games. Now that we’re all sitting behind our computers with our hands in the air looking like complete idiots, let us all just give it a rest. for most it’s only a mere 2 months until you can play the demo-units in stores near you. reserve your judgment until you’ve experienced them all.

that’s all i gotta say.. sorry for ranting people.

    *Gets back to mashup*

  24. The Scatman

I have to disagree, this generation has made no where near as big a step up GFX wise as the last did…

The first time I saw last gen gfx compared to the GFX before that I was impressed, This generation has done next to nothing for me really…

Aside from HD, a slightl boosted Poly count and one or two lighting effects not one game has impressed me so far in terms of GFX when compared to last gen consoles.

I’m sure HD is very nice, I don’t know how it is in America but in the UK… most of Sony’s Audience still have 4:3 14 inch Cathode Ray TVs… never mind HD TVs… so it’s pretty much wasted on every one but ethusiasts, of which Sony doesn’t really have any more than Xbox or Wii.

With the stupidly high price Tag, yet another Delay, best thing going for it being an unproven disc format which may fail and HD technology most gamers here can’t take advantage of… sony are really loosing the main stram over here.

  25. Kritz

Personally, the backgrounds don’t look all that flash either.

I think that it’d look a lot better with some wind effects. I mean, there’s lots of sand in all those pictures. Why’s it so stationary?

It seems that gamers are getting rather picky now. I suppose we know it /is/ possible for developers to make amazing graphics, but they’re cutting themselves short.

I’m not really going to complain about it. It’s not like I’m going to buy a PS3, so I don’t need any more reasons to justify my decision.

  26. JaFO

It is not unfair to equation. In fact I’d wager it is unfair to compare the guys that are making MSG to almost any team that’s working for the Xbox 360.

MSG is not made by a bunch of guys that just got there first Playstation.
It’s made by the crew that’s been making games for the PS-series for ages.
If even they can’t do ‘good’ graphics at release then there is something seriously wrong with that console.
This is the 3rd generation Playstation.
This is a 3rd generation high-profile team developing.
One ought to expect these guys to be able to deliver on day 1 (or week 1 at the very least).

    Or are Sony’s tools for console-development that developer-hostile ?
I sure as heck get the impression that Sony is still in the pre-historic era as far as development tools are concerned, because learning to do neat tricks with new hardware is a piece of cake if the tools are even slightly user-friendly. I’m not a fan of MS, but those guys sure have learned what developers need. Sony by all acounts just hasn’t ‘got it’.

    Trentors:

I have the MGS documentary, I know they did use motion capture ;)

However, my point is that even if the soldiers LOOK better… still looks like mgs2 and 3 :P

    No substance on this :P

  28. B33b3s

    “No substance on this”
Quite an ironic choice of words considering that the xbox port of MGS2 was called Substance :P

Hehe fair enough. But then again, MGS3 looks amazing. One of the best looking games I have ever seen on ANY console – even XBox360 :-)
