Was going through some old boxes in my office and ran across my old press pass for my high school newspaper, where I served as political cartoonist and special features editor. Good times. Anyone else work for the school paper?

i currently work for my college campus paper
Brighton Bulldogs?
Where exactly was this High School?
Yeah. I did the tech article and political commentary. Ahhh.. the good old days…
I used to make a whole lot of “disciplinary assignments” (when I annoyed people too much or something) which were absurd at best. Once I had to write something about “Whiped Cream Cupids” which worked out quite well and eventually was an attack on blind commercialism and fake holidays. Most of those assignments got published.
ok this is not a joke. My school paper wrote an article about me and the group of people I hang out with (the geeks) and how we are different and should be treated different. It was funny, my friend had it framed.
I work for my school paper as a cartoonist, movie reviewer and as one of the editors of the entertainment section. The call me “the mary poppins of southwords (our paper).” I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.
We didn’t get any sweet press passes though…
High School Newspaper! Nice… Never had that.
The only thing we had in our high school was a soccer team, which I was part from 6th grade til I graduated
Good times, good times!
where did you get bulldogs? We were the Bengals…and the school is in Sandy, Utah…just south of SLC.
Aweeeeesome~!
Our school doesn’t have a paper. Bleh.
It’s only got 600 people too, so *shrug*
No. But however…
I did work on my Middle Schools TV news thing. My Middle School had a TV in every class room and they would do national news, local news and announcements using the TV system. The best part is, it was run and operated by the students. I got to be the anchor for that internal news system. Which for me was really really cool. Up until I went on to high school I was the primary color man for that service.
I think its really where I got my interest for media projects that I work on, video and audio.
TV!
Duuude!
My school doesn’t even freaking have intercom…
I was Lead Graphics and Layout Editor for our school paper. the Yucaipa High School Epigraph News Magazine. Won a Few national awards for our school with it while i was on the staff
That is so cool!!!
That’s your kids college fund right there.
With your fame and ebay…
Not such thing here in Uruguay… I did once, like seven years ago when i was in this catholic high school started a webpage like a diary at the time of things that the school did.
They menace me to expel me if i didnt erase the webpage (let say that some priest doesnt like the publicity about them with school girls), of course i did not erase the webpage and they couldnt kick me out… eventually the thing of these so called “priest” went into a newspaper, so my webpage was the smallest of their problems.
But im such a badass that when they call me for the webpage thing i said “do your worst, this is the internet and you cant do nothing about it”, man i feel good.
Those paws looked like dog paws. I figured Bulldogs because it starts with a ‘B’, and somehow Brighton Beagles didn’t fit.
Bengal, not Beagal!
I believe bengal isn’t a type of Dog either?
Most schools were I live doesn’t have school papers, mine included, dunno why.. probably because no one cares about what happens here anyways
Nerd
Hey I was a Brighton Bull dog!
I used to be a photographer for my school paper in Bahrain. Coolest thing I did was photograph a tennis match with Bjorn Borg.
got ne of the old toons u drew??
Hey, I went to Brighton too! Cottonwood Heights Elementary and Butler Middle School as well. I attended Brighton in 10th grade which would have been in 84/85. We moved to Minnesota the summer of 85 so I didn’t graduate from Brighton but if we had stayed I would have been part of the class of 87. I’ll have to look you up in my yearbook, lol.
Crazy how small the world can be sometimes.
Fellow Bengal alumni here, graduated in 99, I’m not sure how it was in 86, but the barb pretty much wasn’t allowed to write half the articles we wanted to. The principal censored a lot of the stuff and we’re not talking about anything that offensive etc. either.
Whoa! Check that out…more brighton peeps in the house!
Craig, how old are you? Gotta be close to my age. I was in 10 the same time as you.
Ben: Mrs Borrup still teaching art when you were there?
Okay… now you’ve admitted to being a cartoonist back in high school. It’s time to break out some of that old artwork! We want to see it. I’d even be willing to go back and dig up some of my stuff from younger years to share if that helps.
Brighton SUX!!!
… At least you weren’t a BEETDIGGER… Yes I was a beetdigger, with the stupidest mascot ever, a guy named Digger Dan… It was awful. It was so coool, when we would make the pep-banners it would say things like… “BEET Alta” and “BEET Brighton” it was SOOOO awsome! YES!
I was last graduating class of the old school before they tore it down, we got to vote on a new name. Of course everyone kept the name, I personally voted for gravediggers.
Hey Scott – I’m 38 and a Graphic Designer in Minnesota. I always thought it would have been fun to graduate with the same kids I grew up with but life is good so I can’t complain. Anyway, those paw prints took me back! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
BTW, did being a Beetdigger leave a permanent scar Psychon?
LOL!
I am 37, will be 38 in July…you graduate in 87?
Scott
I went to Alta High School…who knew you were going to turn out to be my high school rival! Hawks rulez!
lol, class of 87′ rocks!
I’m sure I’d recognize your HS photo but for the life of me I can’t place you. Been a long time. I lived literally 7 houses from Brighton, towards the mountains on Bangle Blvd. Green house with a “u” shaped driveway right across from Cottonwood Heights Elementary. I’d even bet we had mutual acquaintances and/or friends. It wasn’t that big a class.
Who did you have for an art teacher in your years there?
Would have just been that year, and honestly I don’t remember who, I don’t even remember taking art which now that I think of it is a shame. I remember shop, PE, Math, Aeronautics, and English. English only because of this girl with black hair I couldn’t take my eyes off of. She didn’t transfer from the same middle school so I guess, besides being hot, she was something new, lol.
Did you go to Butler Middle School too?
Nope…they had me right on the border and I went to Union Middle. I think I could have gone either way but you know how that goes. I lived just off Creek Road in a place called Royal Lane.
Borrup was no longer there, I went to Butler as well, all 3 houses I’ve lived in (both my parents and my own) are just blocks away from Creek. Many of my close friends went to Union.
Heh, I was was the assistant editor of my high school paper my junior year in Mexico City (American School Foundation – Go Bears!) and the assistant and layout editor my senior year outside San Antonio, TX (Smithson Valley – Go Rangers!). We never had press passes, though. We just let our awesome do the talking.
i dont know of any school in aus that has a school newspaper
tho our schools are tiny compared to urs …least thats what im guessing
think my highschool (8-12) had bout 1000 students tho it was only a 4 yr old school when i was in yr8
biggest primary school i been to for prac (doin teaching at uni) was about 600 or so kids thats kindy – yr7
I wasn’t with the newspaper, but in four years defeated six of my teammates to claim my rightful role as Captain of the Monroe High School Chess Team.
(I refrained from getting a letterman-jacket for Chess, though.)
Well my school is modern, we run a school blog, radio podcast and video podcast.
So you guys should get with the times, I’m currently serving as a writer and producer of the podcasts. Spend stupid amount of time checking up on people and beating them with my jebas stick when they don’t do what they have promised they will get done. I enjoy it though especially the writing side.
