Very nice! Not to be “that guy” but I think you meant ‘deaf’…though ‘def’ represents
Hehe. Patches fixes everything!
Sorry, I am just not seeing any humour in that, Scott. Maybe you didn’t intend for it to come off as distasteful, but that is how I see it. ;\
Kinda go with Mercator here. I have to say I do laugh at sick jokes about celebrities but babies and birth defects don’t rock my boat, no matter how much I appreciate the barb aimed at apple.
Cant please everyone in a crowd. I see humor as an art. And art is supposed to affect you. How it affects you is very personal i guess.
Still funny tough.
Really? You realize that I’m not making fun of deaf children, right?
@ Scott. Of course I know your not making fun of disabled children but for a simple joke it’s a pretty unpleasant allusion. Just got a call about a kid who was born black, born a Muslim, who’s family was liked in 9/11, being abused, who’s mother died during birthing, was born quadriplegic.
You are making fun of Apple and the iPhone 4.0 here so I just think you were a bit insensitive, possibly in the wu I’m being oversensitive but as it stands I think your joke belongs on sickipedia rather than here. Not flamin, just explanin and having had my say shall not add more but continue to enjoy this site and all your other works.
Wow people. Sensitive much? Its a joke at apple. Its a cartoon. Not reality. Nothing to take serious. And besides, if you don’t like, don’t look, don’t complain.
This may be a joke about Apple but it is also highly offensive to parents and family of disabled children.
Are you saying that someone who is different than you needs to be “fixed”?
So hold on a second…you say that “this may be a joke about Apple”, but then ask me if I’m saying that someone “who is different than you needs to be fixed”?
I’m going to take it that you’re not really being sincere about your first statement, and trolling with the second statement.
Can someone explain to me HOW this offensive to parents of deaf children? You’ve only told me that it is offensive, and not why…and that’s not enough for me yet.
First of all I would like to say that I’ve been reading your webcomics and listening to your podcasts for many years and I have had no major complaints with anything you have done up until this comic. I do not think that you were being intentionally offensive and meant well with your creation. Neither my first post or this one were meant to be trolls I was trying to get you to understand why other commentors were unhappy with this comic. Perhaps things would make more sense if you were to change the wording of your comic to say that the parents are unhappy with their child’s skin color or maybe the shape of its eyes; then you would probably agree that it would be distasteful.
I guess the point I was trying to make is that a parent of a child with a disability doesn’t see that their child is broken and needs to be fixed. My brother is a special needs child, although he appears on the outside to be your average teenager something somewhere in his brain didn’t develop correctly as he grew. Many genetic, brain, and other tests later, he has been diagnosed as nonverbal as well as cognatively and mentally delayed. Although 19 years old and 6’3″, he is at the functional level of a 2 to 3 year old. My parents do not blame anyone including some higher powers for the fact that he is not and very likely never will be “normal”. My brother is also highly social, he probably has more friends than most people will have in their entire life. He has a bright infectious smile and a childlike innocence that touches everyone he meets. He’s not like anyone else I know, but at the same time I can’t ever remember thinking that he was broken and needed to be fixed. My parents can attest to the fact that being a parent of a special needs child may be emotionally and physically taxing at times but it is very much a gift. If you still don’t understand what we are trying to tell you could I perhaps suggest that you take the time to volunteer at a summer camp or other program for people with special needs. You will quickly understand how special these people truly are and it is an experience that will change your life. Sure they are different from most, but they are far from broken and we could all learn a lot from them. I hope that you take these words to heart and do not think that I am trying to be a troll.
HEAVEN’S VERY SPECIAL CHILD
A meeting was held quite far from Earth!
It’s time again for another birth.
Said the Angels to the LORD above,
This Special Child will need much love.
His progress may be very slow,
Accomplishments he may not show.
And he’ll require extra care
From the folks he meets down there.
He may not run or laugh or play,
His thoughts may seem quite far away,
In many ways he won’t adapt,
And he’ll be known as handicapped.
So let’s be careful where he’s sent,
We want his life to be content.
Please LORD, find the parents who
Will do a special job for you.
They will not realize right away
The leading role they’re asked to play,
But with this child sent from above
Comes stronger faith and richer love.
And soon they’ll know the privilege given
In caring for their gift from Heaven.
Their precious charge, so meek and mild,
Is HEAVEN’S VERY SPECIAL CHILD.

Come on people. Take a chill pill now. Its only a cartoon.
wow, this is the internet and all, so I shouldn’t be surprised, the internet is full of ass hats who take jabs at people and make fun of the disabled. Scott isn’t one of them and if you are a fan of his you know that, so why are you being so sensitive about the concept that God would patch someone who is disabled and heal them? @Art your comment makes no sense, if said baby was healed what would your problem with that be? btw someone can’t be born a muslim, it’s a choice, of course the baby was born black, you aren’t born white and ripen into black like some kind of fruit.
The thought of traditional dieties as uncaring and insensitive makes people mad, and “injury to the innocent” carries a TON of baggage. It makes sense that those feelings would be projected back onto the artist regardless of the editorial intent of the cartoon. (The internet owes me $500 for this therapy session. Paypal accepted.)
Josh… i’m deaf
first off we dont see it as a disability….
and second…. this comic is pure genius
