When someone mentions a vending machine, I instantly think of an over-priced, slightly warm beverage. But in the land of the rising sun, they’re thinking fishing and fried foods. It’s no suprise that they do things a little different over in the far east, but they’ve really gone all the way with their vending machines. PhotoMann has managed to capture a good few images displaying Japans wide variety of ‘interesting’ vending machines.
Prepare yourself to be amazed.

Wow, having Some of those Vending machines in the US would be awesome. The exception would be the egg vending machine.. yuck. Can you say Stink Bombs…
I bet these work better than the Lowes or Home Depot self-checkouts!
I always get my beverages nice and cold from vending machines….
Just about everything can be found in vending machines in Japan. The “kids toys” aren’t like what you would get in the quarter machines over here. They’re not just kid’s toys, but a lot of anime and video game merch comes out of Gashapons.
Also, the article is a little misleading. Pachinko machines give you balls in which you trade in for prizes, not money. It’s illegal to give out money, so what they do is they give out prizes and then you can go around back and sell the prizes (usually ladies lipstick) back to the same store (but not really the same store) for money.
I saw on the Travel Channel that they can turn in the Pachinko balls for prizes or these coins that you can turn in for cash in some back alley. But I am sure that they are all not the same…
BEER and PORN from a vending machine! I always suspected that the Japanese were more enlightened… now I know for sure
But what I really want to know… is what the he11 is a water salad?
I liked the “fancy Coke vending machines” found on the parking Lot next to Hard rock cafe tokyo.
the other sections of this site are worth a look as well

I mean come on, coffee in a can. I don’t why that’s awesome, but it just is.
Did you guys see what one of them give out? “This vending machine has truly bizarre contents… ‘used’ schoolgirl panties!” Now, I for one think that that is just insane!
We Dutchies have some nice ones too:)
The fastfood chains have special walls with slots for different burgers. They just put a load of ‘m in, and you can get them without waitning. hurrah!
and of course, condom-machines in every pub, bar, street corner, alley, et cetera, et cetera
why would someone need dry ice out of a vending machine
The only problem with the canned coffee is if you accidentally push the button for HOT coffee… and discover it the hard way.
Another cool thing I saw over there was a kiosk in a 7-11 that had a whole bunch of blank CDs and data for recent Playstation games (this was in ’01). You put in your yen, make your selection, and out pops a fully legal (AFAIK) game. 7-11s also sold Playstations.
And those toy dispensers? For about $1 or 2 they have stuff like anime and video game characters, which end up $10 or so at anime stores in the U.S.
