“Inner Adult: Okay, so everything is black and then Optimus’ voice fills the room, except that no effort has been made to tone down its cartoon melodrama. The result, cheesy from the start.

Inner Child: Uh, hey, big guy! You’re watching a movie about Autobots and Decepticons from a planet called Cybertron. We’re not exactly in Serious Land here. Try to just relax and take it for what it is. “

This is good stuff. Thanks, Marcus.

A perfect review of the movie if you ask me. Although my inner child would have even thought that movie was garbage. Bravo.

  3. Alter Ego

Hey Scott, are you disappointed that he called the special effects, “Graphics”?

Thats how I set my mind when I went to see the movie. It was really good.

Hey Chedder, have you even watched the G1 cartoons recently at all? Because if you had and you’re trying to convince me that it was better than the movie, then I’d say in all seriousness that you have the worst case of double standards in the history of mankind. The original Transformers cartoons were pure fluff to try and sell kids toys. Like it or not, cheese IS true to the subject matter.

    “Me Grimlock!”

Wow, now THAT is inspired writing! Or perhaps the fact that the constructicons have 3 different origins told in the span of 2 seasons? Or that they had characters come out of nowhere? SO much better.

I loved the graphics but had major issues with the story and characters.

    hehe, graphics

The fact that your “inner adult” made it in to see the movie in the first place proves that your ability to make cognizant value judgments is severly impaired.

In other words: If you thought this movie was going to be “high art” then you fail.

Perfect summary well done (but i did love the random cop scene) both funny and true review i just about completely agree. And I’m not even a grumpy old 20 yldr …. Yeah I’m not going to get of your lawn so take it like a geriatric :)

Ahh, the advent of the Internet, where every issue requires a discussion and every fool can be heard. How did pop culture ever survive without you. *sigh*

Every single aspect of my psyche loved this movie. I am like Professor Frink.
“No you can’t play with it. You won’t enjoy it on as many levels as I do.”

@ Ballistic. Actually yes i have seen a G1 cartoon recently. I totally agree with you they are total fluff. I was actually surprised after seeing them recently that i watched them at all. LOL. However, the content of the old shows inspired emotions. Thinking back to when i was a kid, i remember the emotions i felt while watching Transformers, not the content. The movie didn’t inspire those same emotions.

But you have to agree with me that the movie is total fluff also. The movie is a way to sell ebay subscriptions and the NEW Transformers toys. At least the old 80’s fluff was about giant robots, instead of the 00’s fluff about cliche human characters. Am i right?

    @ chedder

    Yes you are right… though I don’t think e-bay sells subscriptions. ;)

I loved transformers as a child because of the characters and, no, I don’t mean spike and sparkplug or the token kid in the wheelchair. I mean the transformers. The show survived and excelled because of the characters. Every person who says “I just wanted to see giants robots blowign stuff up and that’s what i got!!!11″ just makes me sad. I loved and still love optimus prime because of his ability to see the good in anyone and his true strength that he expressed through compassion. I loved ironhide, not because he thought killing annoying humans would be funny, but because he was so passionate about his cause and so willing to put the safety off others ahead of his own. Ratchet and wheeljacks curiosity and love of science. Jazz and blaster just cause they where cool and good guys. What better roll model than a character who is cool and a good person. A modern day Fonzi.

I accepted a while ago that this movie would not be the film I want and was honestly impressed with it after watching it only because they managed to portray optimus relatively similarly to how he should be. Everyone else was off including bmblebee who felt more like jazz and jazz who felt like a caricature of 50cent.

Why does LotR get to be a best picture quality move and transformers couldn’t? Cause it giant transforming Robots? Oh, so elves and omnipotent glowing eye towers are believable. There is nothing inherently silly about a species of cybernetic organisms from space. If people think terminator and t2 are believeable whose to say that a thousand years post those same robots owuld evolve and travel to space? Develop morals and feelings? Yes most people who actually read this post will think I’m retarded but it’s that sort of skepticism that keeps us form recieving the quality entertainment we all desire. If LotR can be an event movie and best picture then why can’t all even movies strive for such excellence?

    Cause you buy the tickets.

I don’t know about anybody else. But I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve been to it 4 times already and I plan another trip this coming weekend. I loved it. I don’t have a problem with how they changed things. I rather enjoyed it actually.

  14. Chedder

    eBay Shmebay. :)

  15. Linkage

    Wait,wait,wait…
You were expecting Transformers to be a serious movie? Were you also pissed that TMNT isn’t “Best Picture” quality?
This is an action movie, pure and simple. Moreso, this is an action movie aimed towards young adults and teenagers. I love the Transformers franchise, but don’t be stupid and compare it to The Lord of the Rings.

    /agree with Cheddar

The G1 series was definately fluff, and they were inspiring emotions while they were selling toys. A lot of heart went into those characters, even though the dialog was a bit lacking, you knew how every one of the characters would react, what motivated them, how they interacted with each other – it’s something I miss seeing from some of the “modern” cartoons, you just don’t get as attached.

I mean really, who all cried when Optimus Prime died in the animated movie?

    /raise hand
    /sniffle

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’m not going in with high expectations when I do. Really, reading the various mixed comments about the movie made me understand that, being a huge G1 fan, there’s no way they could ever do the original cartoon justice in a 2-some-hour movie, so why should they even try? A fresh look at it and try to make it entertaining is all they could do – look at how many people gripe about the Harry Potter movies for crying out loud. No way they were going to satisfy all the book fans, no matter how much involvement Rowling has with them. Same case here, I believe – there’s just so much to each character from G1 transformers, how in the world could you possibly make it a true fan movie and not have it last 8 hours? :P

  17. Lupos

    @Brother Barn

Just saw it in theater last night (After having viewed a bootleg first to decide if it was worth it) and I can safely say I really enjoy it an it’s totally worth almost anyones time. I honestly thing the people with me, gf for example, who are not trans fans enjoyed it more. As I said above i;ve got a vision in my head of how it should be and could rattle of a rather lengthy list of what I think should have been done different but judging it on what it is rather than what I think it aughta be I have to say it’s pretty damned good. Few jokes are a little groan worthy and the sector 7 guy is way over done but all in all its totaly fun and has just enough “optimus prime talking about honor and courage and other inspirational stuff” to get me chocked up.

Unless your an absolute fanatical nut that doesnt even liek the comic book reimaginings of the story then you should have a blast at this.
