Yeah, nice camera tracking software. They were showing a “hologram” of the Senate and House chambers when discussing those seats this morning. Looked like a 3D graphic, but with live camera tracking to make it look holographic.
I wish they wouldn’t call it a hologram, though, because it most specifically is not one.
@Venom no, its not actually a hologram as far as I can work out. The guy in the studio can’t see her at all, its a “virtual projection” that only exists inside the TV and not in the studio – if that makes sense
It’s not. He couldn’t see her unless he looked at a studio monitor. It was maybe the stupidest thing I’ve seen on the news to date. Way to go CNN, what kind of fluff is FOX gonna try now to top your theatrics?
Their man won, so they don’t have anyone to shill for now (or shriek against)… stay tuned for this and other ratings boosting nonsense now that they have nothing to talk about!
This might or might not be a hologram. If it’s not, then they are using Greenscreen or precomputed stich on cable. Do you remeber (if you have seen) the holographic projection aparatus invented a few years ago, that heats air (it might use ionization, but i still count for air overheating) and projects an image onto it? (the image was half colored as the heated air had a blue tint)
Either way, i am expecting anything from CNN. Sheesh, capitalists.
I hate this. I don’t care if the technology is cool, just report the darned news and keep this “filler” material out of it!
And it’s not a real hologram!!!! It’s like those yellow lines during football games. The TV viewer can see it, but not the fans in the stadium. It’s CGI. Well, almost…
Gizmodo had an article up about it last night. It’s a collection of 24(?) HD cameras in a ring around the reporter, capturing them from all angles. This information is then overlaid on the signal from the cameras in the studio (heh, almost typed “stupido” there >.> ), giving us this hologram look.
Like someone mentioned earlier, nothing is projected, it’s all only viewable on monitors.
Meh. The technology has been around forever. The fact that they’re using it for a CNN broadcast is just silly. It’s just clever use of camera-tracking in Real-Time. Which goes to show ya how much money they blew on the technology just to make it “LOOK” like she was in the studio with him.
It would have been more impressive if she was being projected into the studio to be captured that way instead of overlayed into the scenery.
It may not be a hologram, but it IS very cool. It’s be a nice way to get people into a studio from across the world. It’s be slightly odd for the presenters, but very cool for the audience at home.
This was just for show. To show off what they learned and what they could do. and to me, it looked like crap.
The one station’s effect that I did like was MSNBC’s tracking board, which was also live CGI mounted in real space. It was clean, it was functional, was not intrusive and was well-thought out. Tracked in real time which states were declared, and it was interactive, so that whoever was working with it could show “what if” scenarios. The best one was when Obama was at 200 EVs, they showed IMMEDIATELY what states he could win to put him over the 270 mark. I’m not usually one to put over news networks, but they did this right. They showed what they could do and how they could use it in a functional manner. CNN was just flaunting their new toy.
This was the biggest let down. I actually thought there was some kind of holographic technology being showcased, but its just a superimposed image =\ Mega let-down.
I’ll admit, it’s really cool technology, but I have two problems with it:
First, it’s NOT a hologram. It’s a camera trick. It’s a green screen style trick, albeit with synchronous cameras to maintain perspective.
Second: One word: “So?” I can’t see the point of it.
As a relevant aside, in the Star Trek book anthology “Gateway,” an Admiral and several captains had a meeting through their holodecks, so that it seemed that Captains Picard, Solok, Calhoun, Shelby, and Colonel Kira were all sitting at the same table, even though they were lightyears apart.
If CNN did something like that, where several pundits/reporters are in different studios across the country, and they’re spliced in so that they look like they are in the same studio at the same table, THAT would be awesome.
Nice, I want one of those for work.

Does she disappear when her ship collides with an asteroid?
You just made my day Spudnut. Thank you.
I Don’t get it. so is it a hologram? Like Leia Organa hologram, or not.

Ok, I’m apparently missing the part where using a piece of unique camera trickery (NOT A HOLOGRAM) has to do with the election?
What’s next in the bag of “Watch us and not our competition”?
Free candy sent to every viewer?
Celebrities boxing?
Two strippers dressed in red and blue who remove a piece of clothing based on which states vote red or blue?
(Actually, I would watch that last one….. never mind.)
Their man won, so they don’t have anyone to shill for now (or shriek against)… stay tuned for this and other ratings boosting nonsense now that they have nothing to talk about!
What I liked most about the CNN coverage was the almost Minority Report type screen they had. That was AWESOME. This is to.
Help me Obi Wan!
Why can’t this be done with just a greenscreen and a few synchronised cameras?

“Two strippers dressed in red and blue who remove a piece of clothing based on which states vote red or blue?”
Politics just got super interesting.
Hologram.. no, but cool… yes.

Actually, she was there, live and in person; only her clothes were a hologram. She was nude.
I am ashamed to be a television viewer. They really DO think we’re stupid.
“Help us Obi Wolf. You’re our only dope.”
This was just for show. To show off what they learned and what they could do. and to me, it looked like crap.

Help me Obi Wan Kanobi! lol that was cool!
Amazing what you can do with just 35 cameras and 20 computers!
This was the biggest let down. I actually thought there was some kind of holographic technology being showcased, but its just a superimposed image =\ Mega let-down.
More on the technology they used here: http://thetechlunch.wordpress.com/2008/11/06/cnn-cisco-teleportation/

holy crap. I know its not a hologram but it is a step in the right direction and it is pretty kick-ass.
Dick Cheney has had this technology for years, that’s how he gets Wubbya to do his bidding.

Point to it, No but what would be cool is if we could get all of our tv projected like that in our house
