Anyone worried he will focus on the undead too much? hehe…
I almost had a geek-gasm when I read the headline that director Sam Raimi will direct the World of Warcraft movie. Unfortunately, this will not be an animated feature done by the folks at Blizzard. Fortunately, the live action feature film will be directed by Army of Darkness creator Sam Raimi. Raimi will oversee pre-production, and shoot the film after he finishes work on Spider-Man 4.
Check the whole skinny out.

the plot will be special effects.
Hopefully we’ll get the director of The Gift and maybe The Quick and the Dead and not the director of Spiderman 3…well, any of the Spidermans. I am sad that it won’t be all-CGI done by the Blizzard cinemas crew. That would be unbelievable to watch.
I stated some years ago that this project had probably been canceled. I’m still not convinced it will move forward.
.
WoW is now an old game and with its replacement in development, a WoW movie seems ill-timed to me… unless it is an attempt to breath new life into what will likely be a declining franchise in 3 years (assuming it’s completed in a timely fashion).
.
A wiser move, in my opinion, would be to begin production on a movie having to do with Blizzard’s NEXT MMO. That timing would be much more auspicious & profitable.
All I give a rat’s patootie about is:
1. Do the dwarves right.
2. At some point the heroes MUST go to Ironforge. (i’d kill to see the live action version of that!)
That is all.
WoW?
Worlds or Wonder?
A live action Teddy Rukspin?
I’m confused.
It’s a *Warcraft* movie, not a World of Warcraft movie. Sometimes I think everyone forgets there were these games before the MMO came out
I too am sad that we won’t have a fully 3D animated movie. The cutscenes are always epic with the action packed into them. The only “real” people that should be in this live-action version would be every race but the Tauren and Orcs. Unless they can find a whole bunch of body builders to play Orcs. Hopefully we get the same action framing, and not so much of the Raimi flair thrown in. (ie: camera turn-zoom in…)
I definitely see Darrell’s point. Still, I see Warcraft as a 15 year franchise that is now stronger than it’s ever been. I think the new expansion and continued international releases will help it keep momentum worldwide (if not necessarily state-side) for at least a couple more years. I’m thinking that Blizz MMO 2.0 is still at least 5 years off.
At the very least, even a mediocre film should be the kick in the pants that will help the aging game shake a few more pennies out of the sofa cushions.
I, for one, think that Sam Raimi is a brilliant choice for director. I’m really excited to see what he’ll do with it. Personally, I think a lot of the source material is pretty weak. I just want to see a rogue mess somebody up at some point in the movie, and I want to see familiar locations on the big screen.
On a side note, I have my poor wife trained very well. When I told her Raimi was directing, she said, “does that mean Bruce will be in it?”
I’m so proud!
It may be a Warcraft movie, but there’s a reason we forget that – and the studios should use that to their advantage.
I’m not familiar with Warcraft, other than it seems to be rooted in Tolkien’s works and expands on it as a role-playing game should. I’ll go in blindly to see this movie on Raimi’s name alone–you just know it’s going to kick ass.
Now if he were to make Clive Barker’s Imajica into a four-hour movie… hey, one can dream!
Not that excited about the film (I think an animation would’ve been better) but I’m looking forward to the Bruce Campbell cameo.
Too bad the movie isnt on the horde side. Many Nerubians will be sad.
I hope that it will be Warcraft 3 – The Movie. That’d be awesome.
Since it’s live action, they should be able to crank it out pretty quick. I’m sure there will still be plenty of CGI though.
.
As long as the writing & story are good, I’m not worried much about the director.
I just hope the Orcs and Horde are presented in a decent manner, and that it sticks to the Lore of Warcraft. Im confident Raimi will deliver.
I keep reading about people saying that Blizzard should do a Warcraft movie using the same animations as in their CGI movies. They need to understand the sheer amount of time it takes to do a rendering of a CGI animation with that quality. Blizzard is really good making a 1-2 minute movie with limited or no voice at all. Even when they do a short movie the spend months and months refining it.
It’s not the same to make a full feature movie that needs plot, character development and dialog. I submit that Blizzard would suck at making full featured CGI movie because they are not a movie studio. You need people that know how to make movies.
I’m really excited about Raimi as a Director. Granted the latest Spiderman movie sucked but Drag Me to Hell was awesome and having the backing of Legendary Pictures ( the studio for the Dark Night movies ) is a very good thing.
I’m sure the lynch-mob will be hammering at my door within the hour for this, but I honestly can’t say that Warfcraft strikes me as the most interesting franchise to turn into a movie. It is, at heart, a fairly generic fantasy setting. I’ll credit it with trying to change things in recent years, and there is some more unique stuff here and there, but, when you get down to it, the franchise has always sold on gameplay, and not on the setting, which is, whatever they do to it, chained, however much, to it’s poor-man’s-Warhammer origins.
Of course, I’m just be ranty and cynical, so ignore my prattling. I fully expect it to be entertaining, if nothing else, and that’s probably good enough in the end.
Not sure exactly what to think of it. So far I’ve enjoyed most of Sam Raimi’s work, but Legend of the Seeker does tell me he can take some HUGE liberties with the source material.
As far as I’ve heard on the rumor mill, they’ll be focusing on the Alliance perspective during the first war. Which makes me kind of sad because Warcraft is one of very few IPs that could be very well used to finally show a story from the perspective of the “bad guys” because the Horde are every bit as noble as the Alliance as far as I’ve seen. Going with the Alliance, to me, suggests that there will be a number of other fantasy cliches.
If you ask me, I’d have liked it best to see the movie fully CG’d. If you opt for a (mostly) live-action deal, get del Toro, he can do some amazing things with the genre so that it doesn’t end up looking like the same medieval European world we’ve seen over and over and over.
I do believe that Raimi can pull off a good movie, but the prospect of this becoming another clone of Hercules/Xena doesn’\t sit well with me.
In b4 Blizzard pulls plug on movie in post production for quality control.
Why would Raimi even want to direct a movie that can’t possibly hope to have the US flag forced in?
Weird vibes over this… I would rather see a full CG movie honestly.
Kinda agree with NeuroMan. Plus Warcraft has suge a huge are of lore…where do you focus on. Are they gonna tell the story of Arthas? Or Thrall? Or something/one else?
What not Uwe Boll? Awwwww…
