Been the big talk with CPU’s for a while now, and now they seem to be shipping! DogHouseSystems (the maker of the PC I play on) has a big announcement about what they are planning to do. Check it out here.
The results are pretty impressive. Seems like we might not see an update this big for a while. Gotta say, good on intel for pushing the envelope.

Heh, I’ve got my Core i7 In a Thermaltake Armor case as well… The problem with the Armor case are those two metal flaps on the front. They’re annoying to begin with, but after a while they start to screech intolerably whenever you move them. They’re not functional in any way. I just ended up removing mine.
Intel needs to do something. they didn’t do well this year.
I got my Core i7 system in December, an i have got to tell you its screaming. I got the 940 that clocks at 2.93 ghz with the asus motherboard that you can OC on the fly, and this chip is so fast that there is no need for me to OC. running 6 gb DDR3 1600 mhz. 1 tb 7200 rpm 32 mb cache harddrive. ATI 4870 w/ 1 gb GDDR5. I get about 70 fps in dalaran with full graphics up in wow.
The i7 is something that I’ve been keeping an eye on and I think its something that is going to keep them competitive right now. They needed something to appeal to the gamers and video developers to use their chipsets and I think this is gonna do it.
Awesome that Doghouse is putting it in their machines now too. Now I need to afford one…
Just so you know, for gaming the i7 does almost jack. You’re still better off with a faster/cheaper Core 2 Duo. Where the i7 shines is highly multi-threaded applications. Where it doesn’t shine is price. It has a premium considering the twice as expensive motherboards and memory, as well as the more expensive CPU.
i7 is overkill for gaming currently; but i’d at least get a core2quad. I just put together an i7 920/evga x58/evga 260/6gb ddr3/etcetc. System screams; but a nice c2d would probably give me the same FPS; but I upgraded an Opty 170 w/ 6800gt; so I will hold this system until it is actually taken full advantage of (and I have to upgrade video card)

Bleh, Doghouse needs to fix a few things. If they want want me to buy from them, they need to learn how to sell less.
If I were going to get an i7, I don’t need a video card with it. I don’t need a harddrive. I don’t need ANOTHER copy of Windows. I don’t need a keyboard, mouse, and DVD drive. I don’t need more ram.
I’m a PC gamer, but I don’t have $2500 to toss out every year. I need a cheaper package where they’re not selling me piles of parts I don’t need to replace. Let me save some money by removing some of that crap.
I know you’re not in charge of DGS or anything, Scott, I’m just wondering if anyone else has this complaint.
i7 is better for multi-GPU environments using more than 2 GPUs. (Not just 2, more than 2). I’m holding out for the next QuickPath processor that will learn from the mistakes of this first one (hopefully). No early adoption unless I’m developing. Of course, they could easily decide to abandon QuickPath for something else and it would be early adoption all over again. Early adoption is best for pets and children. (Is it strange that what’s good for pets is often also good for children with some basic exceptions.)
I built a corei7 system for my dad this christmas, ended up costing about 1500$ less than what doghouse charges, of course then you only get the warranty on the parts, but still to me that seems like quite a margin that they are running.
I ended up using a Sharkoon case with Noctua Case fans, not sure if you can get them stateside. Runs almost completely quiet (and I am EASILY annoyed). Also I would always go with Vista 64 bit and 6 gigs of ram on such a system. But that’s just me
High-end next-gen hardware never ever is good value for money.(period)
Always buy the second best hardware on the market, unless you’ve got money to burn.
Oh wow, you’re a little late aren’t you. By the way, because the X58 platform is still young, firmware isn’t exactly at its peak. You should wait a little while before buying a Core i7 machine. Oh, and one more thing; those rigs are overpriced.
You have to wait until mid 2009, the tech is there but it needs to grow in software developers and game developers.
Still, is a great CPU. And if the guy who think Intel is doing “bad” right now, he should take a look at AMD numbers… I mean, have you?
Eric: If you’re sticking with Intel, you’ll be waiting a good long while: they’ve decided to deliberatly delay the next batch of processors because the economy is bad and there’s an over-supply of “old” motherboards their retailors want to sell first. So it may be a good idea to just go ahead and grab an i7 now.
I’m planning on getting the 3.2 Extreme in June with the rest of my new hardware.
Can i remove processor from my current intel motherboard and replace it in a asus mother board?
i have one intel 17 920 i need to sell it please send me offers.
