Yeah, I wondered that about Mike Tyson too. I so need to get a Wii back. Just got a Gamecube lately though, but if I ever see a Wii in stock (after awaking from the fainting) I will make sure to get it.
I freaked out when I saw this yesterday. I was convinced it was 2D for a split second, the art is great.
@Sokkratez: Maybe there’ll be an option to use the remote NES style.
Well, I don’t think they’re going with “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out” for this game. So they don’t have to cut into their profits by including his likeness into the game. But man this version of Punch Out looks fun.
I wonder how many more TV screens might get punched out by people trying to play this game?
Meh… as much as I have always been a Nintendo fan, they just rehash crappy over and over and over. I love the Metroid series and Zelda, but damn there is only so much you can take of playing the same crap every few years. Nintendo has MANY different gaming avenues, but keep going down the same damn streets.
Just getting around to this Scott? All I’m worried about is the controls, but aside from that I’m sure this one will rock.
Funny to see someone complain about a game that’s only had 2 titles released and yet enjoys the ones that see much more frequent iterations, go figure.
I dunno about this… I’ve never played the original, so I don’t have that nostalgic “Oh I remember how awesome this was!” feeling.
To me, the outsider, this looks like a cartoon-y version of Wii Boxing (which IS awesome). I don’t see how they could add much more to it that would really make it super awesome. Wii Boxing is hard enough work as it is.
@NeuroMan42 : It’s not like Nintendo is the only company to have that, just check the Xbox with it’s Halo and Sony with it’s GTA, Final Fantasy and now God of War. The only difference being that MS and Sony barely make any games. There’s a reason why they’re still making these games, it’s because gamers want them. I also don’t see how this is milking considering there’s only been two Punch-Out games, excluding the arcade game, and the last one was on the SNES.
Well Mike to be fair Neuroman is right in the sense that Nintendo hasn’t created many new franchises and most of the new ones gamers might regard as spin-offs even though they feature new ideas and gameplay, simply because Nintendo use already known characters…
***It hard to say if this is really a bad thing or if the problem lies in most gamers not being able to distinguish. ***
Its like this: a lot of companies make games that are almost carbon copies of each other with “new” characters and stories. Nintendo seem to get flak for doing the opposite and creating new games but with the same characters and story..save the princess AGAIN, you play as Mario, Wario AGAIN etc etc.
But people do not notice how the game itself changes.. use the stylus, use the wiimote, 3d, 2d both at the same time, sportsgame, racergame, partygame, action, platformer, brawler.
But while i do believe they get way to much flak for not being inventive…I would still like to see what Nintendo could do if they decided to create a game with a more complex stories and characters…something which Miyamoto (Brillint game designer) doesn’t like…But i believe that gameplay and story do not have to “kill” eachother… Unfortunately (maybe) Nintendo likes to keep it simpe, more is less etc etc
In conclusion Nintendo are inventive in some ways and very conservative in others, but we have to analyze and distinguish…Before we give them flak for the wrong thing..Yes a punchout remake isn’t a hallmark in storytelling (something i believe ninty needs to try) and neither in gameplay something ninty rocks at. But the original game is OLD and people have been begging for a remake, so don’t give em flak for the wrong thing. :p
Hoo – bloody – rah.. yet another in the LONG list of really really (no seraiously) REALLY old franchises that has been drug out of the tombs, reanimated, and given waggle-control …
*Pass*
PLEASE Nintendo.. go and spend somemoney on an actual NEW game.. then i would be impressed.
I think is unfair to compare Sony and Microsoft with Nintendo in the way they milk a franchise. Halo and God of War only have 3 games (so far), and GTA and Final Fantasy are not even Sony’s games (blame Rockstar and Square if you want)…
However, Nintendo makes slightly updated resets of their games every once in a while. Mario and Zelda games all have a similar story (although the execution might be different). How many “different” Links have existed over the decades?… And many games are even worst. Pokemon games are all the same with slightly new pokemons, different versions and the same story. Really, the Pokemon franchise makes the Madden and Fifa look like innovative.
Like said above, it looks cool til I think about swining my arms around like a hippie on crack in a break dancing comp. Seriously. I think I’ll just put the Wii on ebay and break out my orginal Mike Tyson’s Punch out.
No kinda about it
If they’ve done it right I think it’ll be one of the top selling WII games to date.
The translation from 2D to 3D really clicked well for this one, and of course the sound effects were awesome. I like.
Looks nice, but when I imagine playing it I just picture arms flailing about. Then I’m depressed.
I loved the original punch out, and i cannot wait for this. (Wonder if Mike Tyson will be in this one)

No thanks. -.-
Never was a fan with the Punch-Out series, and this looks NO DIFFERENT at all (Except its in pretty 3D graphics) on how it plays.
For the record, I highly doubt Mike Tyson is going to be in it. Get ready for Mr Dream if anything.
(Btw: Sin and Punishment 2 is awesome)
I freaked out when I saw this yesterday. I was convinced it was 2D for a split second, the art is great.

I’d have to agree. I will be getting this awesome game. I used to play the original for hours at a time, in the olden days.
Haha, I loved the original one. Guess they brought all the same characters back lol. Music was great back then, hopefully they’ll keep them.
I’ll probably rent it for one night of awesomeness, but not much beyond that.
Totally pumped about this. Loved the Punch Out game and still play it occasionally on an emulator. Would love to own this version!

Cool to see this relic brought up to date. What the heck is up with the fruit (and croissants) orbiting their heads?

@Neuroman
This is not milking, fans have been begging for this and the boxing goes nicely with the chucks n mote. Color me excited!
I’m just glad they’ve announced something for the Wii I may actually want to buy.
Needless to say I’m stoked.

RANT OVER
Looks nice, I just hope that the control isn’t nearly as bad as in wii boxing

Didn’t say Nintendo is the ONLY company that does this, but they do run their franchises into the ground MORE then most.
If it’s as good as the first two, I’m sold.

Mike Tyson can’t be in it unless the game has a “bite ear” move and animation.
How about “Kimbo Slice’s Punch Out”?
Like said above, it looks cool til I think about swining my arms around like a hippie on crack in a break dancing comp. Seriously. I think I’ll just put the Wii on ebay and break out my orginal Mike Tyson’s Punch out.
I do like the new takes on the old people.
