Well this image shows where they THOUGHT we would be in the year 2000. Pretty interesting how some of these ideas are here, more or less, and probably read like sci fi back when this was made. Click the thumbnail to embiggen. (Thanks to Scott for the link.)

Seems to me that almost all of them are integrated into computer gaming today though not always in the way they imagined. Minature radio transmitters and recievers *snicker*. The only thing missing would be the ultimate videogame they mentioned though I doubt it’s from lack of technology but more that the arcade industry isn’t really as alive as it was once.

  2. Fraggy_the_undead

Hm, interesting how many things they got right. Except for the radio transmitters *g*
And the ultimate videogame – well, some people redecorate their basement to a realistic airplane cockpit, and play Flight Simulator. And at computer and video game conventions some companies have you sit it a racecar to play TOCA Race Driver, or Need for Speed or whatever. So, it’s not that far off…

  3. Fraggy_the_undead

oh, and I forgot: what year is that from?

  4. jim

what year is that from? late 70s?

  5. TheKeck

Echo snicker at radio transmitters. :)

  6. Matt`

    hehehe.. radio transmitters
hmm.. maybe not so crazy, although of course DS also does wi-fi to the internet

more silly looking is the multiplayer dome with controls sticking out at all angles

  7. Doctorsoul

Yup, by reading this I felt like a ten year old again…
Actually I was talking with a friend of mine about this: we keep on being amazed by the World of warcraft. The way it looks, the way it runs, everything…. And stil there are 12 year olds online complaining about blizzard. I understand that they are not the atari-generation, but hey, again this shows we’ve come a loooooong way!

  8. Gil

Wow… they got almost all of it right. Kudos to them

  9. Pirateguybrush

You can get arcades that have virtual reality setups where you fly spaceships and shoot things, and they’ll rotate and shake according to your movements, that’s pretty much what they’re saying.

I wish so hard that adventure games remained as popular as they predicted. You can’t honestly call yourself a gamer if you haven’t experienced the magic of Grim Fandando or The Longest Journey, set foot on Monkey Island, or brought justice to the unwashed masses as Sam & Max.

    Pirateguybrush:

Go back in time and show the author of that article ANY of the Myst games … And a trailer of Unreal 3 :D

  11. Triarii

    Quadrophonic sound eh? :D

  12. Pirateguybrush

    Ahhhh, Myst………*eyes glaze over*

You’ll be happy to know that at the tender age of 16 I have done all of the above.

    Several times.

(Wondering if I should finish Dreamfall)

  14. Jaramide

Dreamfall is awesome. Granted there isn’t much real game in there but who cares!? It’s the greatest story in a game since the original came out. Maybe even greater.
I could never get my groove on for Myst though. Ever time I tried to play it I almost got depressed from the pure lonelyness you felt as you romped around the abandoned island.

    @ Pirateguybrush

Uh…I call myself a gamer, but I never played Grim Fandando. Does Grim Fandango count? With that said, I’m off to take over Munkey Islond!

  16. Irghen

We did have The After Burner Arcade. That was amazing.

  17. Doctorsoul

Grimm Fandango is my all time nr.1 adventure game. But I’m scared to replay it.. It might not be THAT great… yknow… ehm… pooh!

  18. Traitorfish

Yet again, those old-timey-people were both amazingly over-optimistic while at the same time guessing far short of reality- they had a photo-realistic Gameboy, but still had the dam thing looking like an etch-a-sketch. It’s like those old movies where they have super-intelligent AIs using magnetic tape.

  19. Ceiynt

freaky accuracy. Yes, I wish adventure games were popular again. I’ve tried playing some of the more popular ones recently, but with piss poor control, I felt it was a bit hard to play, and thus lost interest after a few hours.

I do enjoy playing with my radio equipped chess set playing with someone hunreds of miles away.

“Most computer games will be able to handle more than 2 players”

if only they could have seen world of warcraft back then in a vision, i think their sanity would have cracked.

  21. Coconut

    Etch a sketch Gameboy!

  22. Devilbob

I don’t have a Wii— do they have an etch a sketch type program— if so, I might have to get me a Wii– that would be way to much fun

  23. Pirateguybrush

You know, it would be cheaper to just buy an etch a sketch…

“Grimm Fandango is my all time nr.1 adventure game. But I’m scared to replay it.. It might not be THAT great”

Play it again, Sam. It gets better every time.

  24. I Ludicrous

@ All of you people dissing the “miniature radio transmitters:” You’ve never heard of Bluetooth? Or wireless RF mouse or keyboard?

Maybe whoever came up with this projection so long ago is a little smarter than you are – he had to project forward, while you can’t even project things that happened a couple of years ago.

    Sad. So very, very sad.

  25. DoggySpew

    Beautifully and quite accurate.
Althought not in detail, but at least not as clunky as some predictions of the future from the fifties.
