its sad when the games look way better then the movies. Star wars needs a reboot..
This game looks so cool, why must it come out… I just finally quit my WoW obsession and now this has to come out… damn you Bioware!!!! I guess real life can wait a couple of more years.
A good number of the people at the SWTOR forums will say “It’s GL’s story and he can do what he wants”… until you ask them if Han shot first. (The only variation anyone there accepts to Han shot first is Han shot only.)
Even the Lucas fanboys cannot bring themselves to defend Greedogate.
We still have to worry about LucasArts, though. Every retcon GL vomitted ended up in SWG as they happened. Obsidian was forced to release KotOR2 at least a year too early (for the Christmas rush).
If SWTOR looks to be drawing too much attention, GL will likely try to break it to fit “his vision”.
BTW, someone at Blizzard has said that Bioware will make a great game, but that it takes more than that to make a successful MMO. They cited their own B.Net experience and manpower to their credit. I would like to cite EA’s manpower and MMO experience with the first successful MMO to exist back when the Net was young (and it still exists). While Bioware is developing the game, EA will likely be responsible for supporting it. Supposedly, EA has no control over the development of SWTOR since it started before EA acquired BW. EA has not been known to have a golden touch in the past, but we shall see if the EA beast with BW at the reigns can create the WoW-killer that a growing number of people are predicting. (WoW-killer is extreme, IMHO, but I do believe WoW will be injured.)
I really hope I get my new Macbook Pro so I can at least play this game.
The cinematic was cool, and I love Bioware, but for me Star Wars is in the Episode 4-6 timeframe. I’m not really into The Old Republic.
Someone I know mentioned how the great movies were not made based on budgets but, rather, made based on the love of story telling. GL has shown that he does not love his stories. Bioware, OTOH, has shown a great love of story telling. They have promised that SWTOR will have a focus on the story.

…
While KotOR2:TSL deserves some notice, SWTOR focuses more on the KotOR story as the reference of its history. That is good because it is pure hell to get KotOR2 to play even in XP and because it is painfully incomplete. KotOR had just one hitch for me to get to run in Vista x64, but once running and past the tutorial, issues were few and far between. There’s some good info in KotOR for backstory. KotOR2 expands some of it, but thankfully again, one does not have to complete the game to get the gist of what else happened out on the rim.
Yeah. I was registered on the SWTOR site within the first month of its public opening last year. My excitement has not wavered since.
@hesit8: You better put Vista/7 on it then. The client engine is Windows only.
They were busy blessing the world with Forgotten Realms PC games at the time
CJMack I thought they only ever released 3 movies for Star wars back in the late 70′s/ early 80′s, what are these mysterious 6 movies you are referencing
Seriously though even though the new movies blew chunks this happens waaay before that timeline, and I really am only nervous about one thing for this game. EA. That and I’m sure it will have an awesome story, but will the gameplay be there to make up for it. Mass Effect is a good example. Highly enjoyed the game despite some flaws in the gameplay. Were this an MMO though I don’t think the flaws would have let me enjoy it for the long haul MMO’s would need to make them profitable. So two worries really.
I’m on a Bioware high. Check out the media for Mass Effect 2, while you’re at it.
That ‘trailer’ looks fantastically awesome. But that being said, it is just a trailer. And trailers seldom reflect actual gameplay.
Case in point WoW. Now don’t get me wrong, I love WoW. But the trailers for WoW and actual gameplay are miles apart.
Well, I guess I have to upgrade my computer.
That looked very nice. But then I went to the site and looked at some of the combat gameplay videos currently availible and I’m rather disillusioned. Apparently most affordable computers haven’t come so far as to be able to sustain masses of high quality images on the screen at the same time (we knew this) so the actual game is much less impressive looking. WoW at max detail is about as nice as these vids. So the game had better be insanely fun or I’m not switching, because of both the time investment I have in WoW (which is no small matter) and because WoW just seems better and is already built up.
But I did like the movie.
Nice trailer… but it’s just a trailer unto itself and is not an accurate representation of the actual game any more than any of he WoW trailers are an accurate representation of WoW’s gameplay.
.
We shall see.
That small video COMPLETELY wipes the crap that was Episode 1 & 2 from my mind.
I wonder if midichlorian level will be stat.
Well the trailer has nice graaaaaphics and all, but I want to see how the game looks like.
I would love to watch an entire movie like that. That trailer kicked @$$!!
The gameplay doesn’t worry me too much. Bioware always delivers. I’m really more intrigued by the story telling because there is none in WoW, and putting a story in an MMO could make it something really special. And that trailer was so much better than the WoW trailers have been, just phenomenal.
I was married once. It was a secret. And then apparantly I mader so sad that she died from it.
Bioware knows how to tell stories. That’s for certain. I am curious, though, about the optional “love-interest” side-stories that may be in the game. That seems too Leisure-Suit Larry-ish. (I smell a comic topic.)
…
Also, this is blessedly ~3500 years before midi-chlorians were realized. At this time, everyone can be a Jedi (like everyone wanted in SWG, but it didn’t make sense in that setting). The Force is still sorcery and faith-based. The Sith Rule of Two has not happened. These Sith hate the Jedi more than their desire to rule over all. The Mandalorians are not clones. Since it is also ~300 years after the Jedi Civil war, the presence of the Jedi in the Galaxy had just recovered when the Sith, who as explained in KotOR2 were amassing in secrecy, attacked.
…
Members on the site have assumed that the Sith and their allies stopped their advance when they had spread their numbers to the point of balance with the concentration of their opposition in a smaller area, but they had already sacked Coruscant and forced the Republic into a Treaty to help stay the coming rebound of the Republic when the Republic stopped reeling from the onslaught and organized themselves. Currently, we know of mercs, bounty-hunters, Jedi and Sith. They told us there are more.
PS and OT, I am receiving a time from this site’s server that is 15 minutes ahead of what it should be.
I love how they just beat the shit out of each other while sword fighting. When I used to fence my coach used to tell us about the “good days” of fencing when the ONLY way to get out of a sword lock was to punch the guy in the face, then he would look off into space reminiscently.
I wonder if he knows that the “good days” were 300 years ago.
I love Star Wars (even the prequels, I don’t care what anyone says), and I’ll definitely be trying out this game! It could be my WoW-killer.
“@hesit8: You better put Vista/7 on it then. The client engine is Windows only.”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I hope this changes. This is not cool. If I can play WoW on my Macbook Pro, why not this game?
I just forgot about WoW.
That made episodes 1-3 look like low-quality pre-production previews of amateur home movies made from fanfiction by people who hardly knew anything about Star Wars and all spoke different languages.
OMG
@Nancipants: They picked the client engine to jump ahead in development. The client engine is Windows only. Most people are assuming that an OSX engine is in the works but that it will not be available at launch since it has to be created from scratch instead. The only promises made are Windows at this time.
I hate it. It’s more historical redundancy crap. I would love for them to flesh out a different era with something that didn’t involve the Sith nearly wiping out the Jedi and the Jedi rebounding. *rolls eyes*
I mean, seriously, why can’t the writers ever come up with anything fresh and different for a change? We’ve done this tug of war thing like, what, 5 or 6 times now?
That was shamefully-great. I’d watch 90 minutes of that. My new question for movies is now “How were the PHYSICS?”
There was so much awesome in there that at the end of that i realised i hardly took notice of what the narrator was saying…. even after watching it 3 times
I’m not anti The Old Republic but I am not impressed by this cinematic. The women could have come from any cinematic in the last 5 years. Look at WoW and WAR and see their cinematics – they are really cool but no indication of the game as played (although the gameplay fottage released so far for this does look nice).
As for this cinematic – we have a Darth Vader ripoff turn up with a cute sidekick added with a bounty hunter who looks as boring as hell. What happens? The bad guys look and act ‘cool’ and they kill the good guys. This has formulaic written all over it. Even while I watched it I had the theme from the Darth Maul fight in Phantom menace going through my head. I guess the smartest game to make would be a game outside of the time lines of the films that took all the best bits of all 6 films and put them into a game modern gamers would like.
It looks like they’ve done a good job but my concern for a Star Wars MMO is how do you make a Jedi or Sith look badass and leet? People like to look special in MMOs they at least want to look fashionable and that they have the latest gear. What will the latest gear in Star Wars be? The Star Wars universe is about beaten up technology, not the latest coolest looking thing the only heroes with sleek looking spaceships looked out of place or were just plain lame. But for me it was never about wanting to be the bad guy. My generation wanted to be Han Solo or Luke Skywalker now this game just wants to tear the jedi apart. And it’s as predictable as a fanboy who’s favourite character was Boba Fett before they made the prequels.
Personally I want to play one of Yoda’s race as the gnome equivalent in The Old Republic and bounce of the walls chopping limbs off the Sith because obviously you can’t be a real Star Wars baddie without a few missing limbs.
Also I just wanted to add that when the good Jedi died he looked kinda like Scott.
*girlish giggling* *bouncing motions* *Faints*
Amazing. Too bad it’s going to be MMO…
too bad the trailer was not game play code. it was a pre-rendered cut scene. will wait till i see the game to pass judgement. although trailer was totally awesome.
Well, even though I am a starwars geek I think my defense of the movies is pretty reasonable:
The entire series of KOTOR and this magnificant-looking MMO could not exist without the films, and yes, in particular the prequels from which they seem to get most inspiration. Without the prequels, there’d be no KOTOR. So you could argue that they make a better job in telling a story (which they probably do), but it’s undeniable that the rich material they can work with is here thanks to Lucas, and I think initially this amazing universe is what he set out to create.
Just my thoughts.
