On February 13, 1970, the Birmingham quartet known as Black Sabbath released their self titled debut LP to the world. Fourty years ago today Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler & Bill Ward began a music revolution that would breath new life into the world’s bastard social scene of the time. It came to be known as heavy metal.
Interesting look back.

Are you kidding??!! Forty year ago??? Man I did not expect to see something like this, it slapped me in the face like kicked foot pedal. ok, that doesn’t make much sense, but still, I’m only frickin’ 41!!! Seriously, I thought it, and I guess I, was much younger.
Welcome to my world, Chuck. That time FLEW! Plus, I’m not too sure Ozzy knows he was even there.
Very cool. I remember reading that “Ticket to Ride” by the Beatles was actually the first song to incorporate heavy metal elements into the song.
Hell Yeah! So now that heavy metal is 40, will it get respectable? Or maybe go into a middle life crisis? Anyways, I’ll be listening to it, me is going to indulge in some sweet Dark Tranquillity the rest of the day
Not quite, see it hit the midlife crisis when Metallica decided to start creating the godawful music also known as everything post Black album. When everyone else started imitating them the crisis was on
Good point! Its what i got from their documentary. Midlife crisis indeed
Wow! 40 years! Seems like only yesterday when I listened to my first heavy metal album “KISS – Destroyer”. I was 6 years old! (turning 40 this year.) Hard to believe that bands like Black Sabbath, KISS, Iron Maiden, and the likes are still popular to this day. Without Black Sabbath, we’d probably not have DIO; without KISS, no “Runaway” movie villain, and… we’ll, I won’t go on. Happy Anniversary Heavy Metal!
Ugh. My thoughts upon reading this were summed up perfectly in the first comment. Also 41, I always tell people that I came out around the same time as the first Led Zeppelin album.
Ugh. Led Zep is not and was never heavy metal. Never. Like, not ever.
Well, right. But they are considered highly influential to the birth of metal as we know it. They pioneered a series of elements that became staples of the metal sound and imagery. So, they can me mentioned in the context.
True. If if weren’t for bands like Led Zepplin, metal probably would developed from Donnie and Marie! lol
err.. dang spell checker… Led Zeppelin!
Very interesting… Led Zeppelin is listed under… Heavy Metal!

I know it’s because I came along a little later than that, and my intro to metal was different, and so my definition is a bit different, but I don’t consider about HALF those band on the wiki page to be metal AT ALL. Contributing factors, perhaps, but not metal themselves.
Well, I’m only 21, but I’m not looking forward to the day when Britney Spears is looked upon as part of the “Golden Oldies”.
I hear ya! It’s almost like when Carrie Underwood sang a remake of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” and all the kids were saying what a talented writer she is for coming up with something so “Original”! You know that “Metal” from our day is quickly becoming “Oldies” when the songs start getting makeovers!
