There’s been plenty of talk online the last few days about the 40th birthday of Sesame Street, and it’s given me a chance to relive a huge chuck of my childhood, and well beyond it. Not only was I raised on this stuff, but so are my kids. And who knows, perhaps their kids too one day. It really was / is / will be something special. So much more than simple children’s programing. It’s cultural impact smacked me right up side the face, and I am better for it.

One of my favorite musical things they ever did. Love this too. Honestly, I could post a hundred of these things…they all had an impact. (I love this one too. Still makes me laugh today.)

We bought a DVD of old Sesame Street shows including the original pitch. Pure pure awesome. There are certain things we force upon our kids, and original Sesame Street is one of those. Pre-Elmo. Pre-Sniffleupagus.

Pre-Snuffleupagus? That’s seriously old school. He was already around when I was watching in ‘79-’83 or so. At least, that I remember. Loved that show so much.

My kids actually did not like Sesame Street. Elmo really turned them off. I could watch the old ones but some of the stuff through the 90’s was unwatchable and I have not turned it on since 98.
Would like to add some classics to list of favorites.

I know that for myself and I guess most near my age (41), it was due in part to growing up with Sesame Street during the early years, which then molded into the slightly more mature “The Muppet Show’ and then ultimately into the various Muppet movies as we grew up.

I also can remember some of the contemporaries of Sesame Street, like The Electric Company (Morgan Freeman and Spiderman FTW), Zoom, and Mr Roger’s Neighborhood, but none grew with us the way the Muppets did.

To everyone that’s posted links to Sesame Street videos: Thank You!!! These have made my day. And also made me realize that my 4-year-old hasn’t seen some of the best children’s programming ever.

Part 2: This time Kermit’s lecture is interupted by the lecture subject itself.
