I was 8 years old when this thing made it to market. That seems like ages ago.

See that Wii or Xbox sitting under your TV? The PSP or DS tucked away in your messenger bag? That copy of Pac-man on your cellphone which cost five bucks and expires next month? Each of them owe a debt of gratitude to the granddaddy of all videogame consoles, the Atari 2600, which ushered in an era of unprecedented television usage, and which turns 30 years old this month. That’s right, the first 2600 units rolled off the assembly line in October of 1977, delighting both children and kids at heart with games like Pitfall and Pole Position, and helping distract the nation after the untimely death of the King, the tragic crash of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane, and Pele’s retirement.

The rest right here.

When I was like 6 years old, I had an Atari 2600 and an unhealthy amount of games for it. I played the crap out of it. It probably got me hooked to video games more then my Nintendo(which I also had, actually I had 3.. because my family plans Christmas horribly).

Oh the memories. I still have my 2600 in a box under my bed.

Its not worked for the last 10 years but i still have it.

    And about 16 games.

If only i could play hero again.

The model in the pic is the one that was usally sold in Ecuador back in the late 80’s (I guess that the one i had was not counterfeit)

    … so many memories.

Cheers to the console that introduced many to the wonders of electronic entertaiment!!

anybody know were a guy could buy a 2600 in working condition????

  15. Brian D.

Ebay has a quite extensive listing of Atari 2600’s. Dunno if they’re in working condition or not, but still quite cool that some of them range from $30 to $300 for price ranges.

Lifeisaglitch – That’s a pretty damn funny reference to the comic. lol Not to mention the Leeroy Jinkin’s baby strip.

    Will check it out.

Oh man, H.E.R.O. what a blast that game was…

The hours and hours I wasted with a 4 bit console… then 8… then 16… it’s like a wicked evil math problem.
