Oh brother…

They were two of the hottest Christmas gifts: Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s Playstation 3 game consoles.

But these machines aren’t just hot among kids; they’re also compatible with sexually-oriented Web sites.

WARNING: This is one of the worst, most inflamitory, and mis-guided articles you might ever read.

    XDDDD

these people make me crack up.
I love the comment at the end “we have to be careful of games like wii”

oh yeah… the wii is a game >

  2. Dane Bramage

not sure what is inflamitory about that article. i think it clearly puts the owness on the parents. do the research… figure out the parental controls and PLAY a role in your childs development. OOH… SHOCKING!

As I have said about many times before (just not here), it’s not the technology that is evil, it is how people use/abuse it that is evil.

  3. the Geek

I’m just going to make a blanket statment here, just to put in out on the table.

Everything can be used for something some parents wouldn’t approve of.

    Everything.

These parents would probably shudder to know what some kids do with Barbie dolls.

I hate when people let a small chance for evil cheat them out of a good thing. Or worse, cheat their kids out of it.

  4. Rook

I think the simple point here is, a lot of parents won’t have the first clue about what these new consoles can and can’t do. How many of them are actually going to realise it connects to the internet? If it takes an inflammatory article in their local rag to make them realise that maybe they ought to have a closer look at what Billy is doing then there you go.

  5. Velt Cardio

” For Laurn Schroeder, protecting her first grade girls is a priority. “[They're] innocent, and we want to try and keep them that way,” she said.” ”

Yeah, she will be innocent until she is 18 and becomes pregnant because her mother didnt explain her a thing…

    sad.

  6. Rook

I think there’s a difference between being innocent an educated. And watching the latest slap-me and pull my-hair porn videos.

  7. Taellosse

I’m wondering how old the “child” who boasted about DLing porn on his Wii actually was. The idiotic thing about this article isn’t that it cautions parents about the dangers of an internet-accessible game console, it’s that it assumes that game consoles are targetted exclusively to children under the age of 12. The very existence of this webcomic, along with half a dozen others I could name without any effort, and their accumulated thousands of readers, is proof that hasn’t been the case since all of us late-20′s to mid-30′s people actually WERE 12 years old.

I’d be willing to bet that if statistics were recorded on exactly who was buying these consoles, it would show that anywhere from 40-70% of the people using them are over the age of 17, and that a significant subset of those were over 21. Video games haven’t been “just for kids” since the kids who first started playing video games grew up.

  8. Zadoy

    ||But their mom is keeping an eye on an industry that she says tricks and targets kids into learning too much, too fast.||

XD This is so dumb!! It’s not a trick, and they are not targeting!! XD Gawds They need to realize that things like this were designed for adults and adult super vision.

Well it does tell parents to pay attention to what thier kids are doing but the industry is not evil like it is being protrayed. XP w/e.

    Go
    do
    some
    fucking
    parenting.

    Also

“Some porn sites are advertising they are “Wii Friendly.”"
    kekekekekekeke best quote ever!

  10. Gil

That picture is great. I want a bigger version to replace the wallpaper on a friends laptop :)

  11. Dane Bramage

@Triarii – damned skippy. my point exactly. instead of blaming everybody around you, take responsibility for yourself and your kids.

    Also…

I thought all porn sites were wii friendly ;-P

  12. Satan (Rezlow)

AHHHH the evils of my website browsers exposed again!

Next I shall hide the porngraphic imagines in childern’s cereal bowls…

  13. JaFO

According to the article the Wii’s parental controls aren’t good enough ?
How about doing the parenting yourself instead of letting a machine do it for you …

I also wonder how she even knows about ‘porn’-sites being Wii-friendly.
Perhaps she googled for Wee-friendly sites ? ;)

  14. Dave

Fact of the matter is, kids can also get porn from computers but there’s no hubbub about that.

Like someone said, you could claim almost anything you give a child could cause something worthy of complaining. People complain about The Sims, about how the sexual and death aspects just aren’t for kids, but I’ve seen my sister do stuff with her Barbie and Ken that’s equal to what I’ve seen on the Sims, if not worse.

And lol @ calling the PS3 and Wii ‘games’. Psssht.

Also, can anyone hear the pitter patter of jack thompson running in the distance? He’s sure to pick this one up.

  15. Fums

My computer is more porn friendly. Why dont they do something about THAT first.

  16. Novan Leon

Scott, exactly what information contained in the article is incorrect?

It sounds like you’re getting a bit defensive.

And yes, there is a hubbub about kids getting porn from computers.

Cmon guys, lets try to keep our “holy” fight for video game rights focused on actual threats and not get defensive on every little thing, especially when they’re factually correct.

  17. Tanukitsune

This is the “Platstation Pornable” all over again….

  18. Melissa

I find it “entertaining” that there isn’t a “comment” link or setup where people can answer back by email or forum post… Preemptive damage control, anyone? It’s like they expect us to take it without a word when it is completley obvious that they make this shit up! That bugs me to no end.

  19. Melissa

    –>Novan Leon

It’s not that the facts are incorrect, it’s the way they are presented. A “child” wrote that he was going to try to get porn on the Wii. What is a “child”? A 17yr old who is legally a minor? A 15yr old? Or a 5yr old? The article obsfucated facts by ommiting pertinant information. The article also gave quotes without mentioning the precise question asked. The interviewer could’ve been asking about porn in general for all we know, or “Mature” video games. It’s incredibly sloppy reporting, plain and simple.

  20. Sly

Porn via the Wii ? – this might sell even more consoles now…….

  21. The Geek

In defense of the reporter. These parents have probably been writing letters to the editor or phone calls demanding that the world be told about this hainous crime against humanity. The probably did it enough that the editor said “Fine” and assigned some junior writer to cover it just to satisfy them. If anyone at the paper (or is it a TV station? I can’t tell) really cared, the story would have been longer and had more than the one source.

Poor Laurn Schroeder, what’s she gonna do when her kids learn that their last name can be used to mean schlong?

  22. Novan Leon

Sloppy reporting, yes; however, I would hardly call the article inflammatory. No outrageous claims are made and all the capabilities of the consoles are accurately portraid.

Sloppy reporting? What do you expect from a little two-bit local TV news program? You want something inflammatory? Take a look at the media’s coverage of the Bush speach… but that’s another topic altogether.

  23. nick13b

sheesh! there focusing too much on the Wii and not the computer! eh? the PC is all about porn and I use it to look up porn cuase it has a better resolution and the Wii is a game machine not a porn box. Only parents who do drugs would worry about their kid looking up porn on a video game system!

  24. I Ludicrous

    Jack Thompson is Satan!

  25. Davad

This just in…a 2×4 can easily be used to hit someone in the head. Don’t let your children practice carpentry.

  26. Corey

Seriously, this is just sad. Don’t these idiots have anything better to do with there time than bitch about problems that already have solutions? How about you try parenting your children yourselves instead of whining about the EVIL GAME INDUSTRY and their “kid’s toys” fucktards.

  27. Triarii

Lmao Davad. Point well proven :d

  28. Dane Bramage

And that’s it exacly Corey. American society has been conditioned to belive that it is not the responsibility of the individual to protect them selves, but the responsibility of the manufacturer or the state, or the feds or whatever. totally assinine, but also totally true.

  29. Triarii

ALSO.. I forgot to mention, this makes me want a Wii more than ever.. to get porn on my xbox 360 I gotta stream from my pc.. it’s just not practical, man.

  30. Wavilines

…I just woke up (sick) and then i see this. These types of articles make me wanna go back to sleep because of their sheer stupidity….

  31. matt

Yea, that’s the stupid local news in my area. I saw them talking about it and didn’t even give them the credit of watching it.

  32. damianlz

Am I the only one creeped out by the porn addict picture?

  33. Flamov

Erm, firstly go and get a brain, also

    - PCs can assess Pr0n
    - Macs can assess Pr0n
    - PSPs can assess Pr0n
    - Phones can assess Pr0n
    etc.

  35. Dan

My buddy showed me his Wii whilst I was on vacation. And the first thing I asked was do you have the web browser and can I see porn on it? That is the only thing woth it without a keyboard. Glorious standard def porn.

  36. Scandinavian

    Ok. That’s just wrong.
I mean, if kids want to acces porn haven’t they ever heard of the PC?
    (which stands for porn central)
I mean, if you’re gonna refuse buying a Wii or PS3 to your kid, just because your kid could acces porn through it, then you pretty much want to keep your kid away from TV, PC, Mangas, and maaaaaany other things.
But serriously, browsing for porn on the Wii?
    Geez!

  37. wawazat71

that chick in the t shirt. Shes freaking me out. Looks a bit insane.

  38. Alex

If you have a supposed five or six year old looking for porn then you know that the child is quite likely a little screwed up to begin with :P

  39. Jordy

The ultimate American parent (according to what I read and hear about on the internet) should probably follow these simple guidelines:

In order to keep your children “innocent” for as long as legally possible, you should keep them away from the following:

    Alcohol
    Drugs
    Sex
    Violence
Any religion other than your own

To accomplish this, there are a few steps one has to take:

1: No TV, Internet Access, Magazines, Newspapers or Video Games. All these can possibly show or be used to access pornography, violence and the views of different religions.

2: Keep the child inside at all times. Any interaction with the outside world might contaminate their unspoiled, innocent souls.

3: Home schooling. If the child has to interact with other children, there is a possibility they might be contaminated by one of these children who may or may not have parents who follow these guidelines.

4: No Sex/Drugs/Alcohol/Violence/Other religions in your house, period. Don’t make that second child, because sooner or later the first will wonder where it came from and you will be faced with the choice of lying to them, or spoiling them by explaining. Don’t do drugs (they’re bad, m’kay), don’t fight, don’t discuss current events at dinner, the child just might start to wonder what a muslim is and we wouldn’t want them interested in terrorism, now would we?

5: Once the child is 21, you cannot legally hold onto him/her and the time has come to let go of your innocent, unspoiled bundle of joy and release them into the world.

6: Suppose the child somehow doesn’t make it in the world despite your best efforts, just find something else to blame for that. You did the best you could do, it’s not your fault.

…Looking back on this, it might actually be a fun social experiment!

( oh, and for those of you reading this post on your Wiis, go look at porn, it’s much better than my writing, really)

  40. Jordy

Just in case the feds read above post:

Jordy is not in any way responsible for any consequences resulting from previous post. It was written as a joke and is to be percieved as such. If any parent seeks to follow my guidelines for “parenting,” do not seem surprised that it should not work. If, for some reason a parent wishes to complain to me, they can let me know by e-mail, be sure to include your address, preference of sauce and one of the words “used” or “unused” so I can send them a pair of my shorts, along with their preferred sauce. Upon receiving said shorts, please proceed to eat them.

PS: Jordy is also not responsible for any and all consequences resulting from the eating of said shorts.

  43. Traitorfish

“It’s not just a console, it’s a portal to the deepest, darkest pits of hell, an inferno of pain and destruction, from which a horde of unspeakable terrors will emerge and tear a child’s skin from his flesh, before slowly digesting his still-living body!!!”
    Wonderful.
America never ceases to amaze me. The US, as a society, is obsessed with individual responsibility, and refusing to be responsible for anyone else, and yet, whenever something like this comes up everyone begins a frantic shift for someone or something to shift the blame to. That’s why the religious right always baffles me- they attempted to combine capitalism and moralistic religion, two inherently incompatible ideologies. We have the same problem in Britain, of course (I suspect most western countries do), but it’s not as bad.

  44. J

Nobody even mentions that Nintendo has built in parental controls which can restrict the usage of the internet channel. Why not just block the internet channel from being used from your children, and make them surf the internet on a PC that has protective software on it? Why do you HAVE to let you kids use Wii’s internet functionality unattended? People are ridiculous.

  45. Propane

Mother from artical: WII PORN OMG WORLD IS OVER! MY CHILDS INNOSENCE! THE WII IS FOR CHILDREN AND PORN! AAAHHHH

Good mother: What’s what, Bambi? Kids are using the Wii to look at porn?! Oh no!! This will not do at all! I know, I’ll disable the internet on the Wii and maybe even go into my wireless router and set up a 128 bit WEP just so the little tykes don’t try to guess their way in! Thank you Bambi!

  46. RaXha

“they’re also compatible with sexually-oriented Web sites.”

so? so is every other thing on the planet with a web browser in it :P geez… stupid stupid STUPID!

  47. Kimari

    HAHAHAHAHAHA… I can’t stop laughing :)

  48. Eli

    someone. please. kill. this. BITCH!!!

  49. JaFO

I’m just wondering why no one has been able to use the Wii-mote to control ‘stuff’ on a website …

I mean … it even buzzes for *beeps* sake. ;)

Kinda reminds me of this thing here (Japan) a few years back where people were having to go the hospital to have the vibrating cellphones…ahem, “removed”…
