Before we start, I would like to offer my thanks to the employees at GameStop for making this review possible. It seems that the employees at my local GameStop are graced with an extra chromosome and without their superior knowledge, guidance, and arrogance; I would have never gone to Target to get my hands on a copy of Dead Rising. And a special thanks goes out to the employee that “totally had copies man” but couldn’t “put them on shelves, bro, because I have stuff to do”. I’ve never seen someone so unwilling to take my $60 plus tax. Once again, GameStop employee you are officially on notice and Target, you are a cool middle-aged guy that hangs out in the bushes outside my house. I finally got my hands on the copy with little to no agitation and then I dragon kicked a giraffe.
What first set my sights on Dead Rising was what pretty much did it for everyone else. Zombies and malls. I can almost feel George Romero being channeled while enjoying this game. I’m sure Capcom wouldn’t mind the comparison but they want to set themselves apart and they get very far with the limited palette they offered. I don’t know what it is about B movies that makes me so happy, probably the thought that people’s careers are ruined by some of them but then, more often the not, you get a jem. A movie that is so bad it’s good. Dead Rising plays out like a so-bad-it’s-good B movie, but that is the exact reason why it shines, it never takes itself too seriously and that is the appeal to it and oftentimes it is a saving grace.. Imagine being placed smack dab in the middle of Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and then just running around doing God’s good work. And by “God’s good work” I mean ruining a zombie’s day, ruining it right in the face.
Your worst enemies, consumers.
The whole game is terrifying but it never lets you forget that it is not to be taken too seriously. To lighten the mood, I took a showerhead and plugged zombie’s head so it showered blood, hilarity ensued. Dead Rising does a great job with immersion and making the player feel like, you know, some guy killing zombies.
