Well, this is sort of disappointing, if not a total surprise.
“Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms is shutting down, according to Shacknews. They cite ‘a reliable source close to the company,’ who said the developer is finished and employees have already been let go. It looks like all of the Duke Nukem Forever jokes are turning into reality; DNF might turn out to be the ultimate vaporware after all.”
Get the full skinny here.

Wasn’t this already vaporware like…. 5 years ago? Who seriously thought they *might* still make it?
This was confirmed by Gamasutra yesterday as well.

I thought they would do it, I had hope! I figured X-mas season this year was gonna be like the summer of movies this year…
This is way too sad, I live in So Cal and most of my friends all work for gaming companies and sadly half of them have been laid off this year alone, only to find another programming job for… wait for it… companies developing iPhone Apps? Ugh!
Blah, Blah, Blah, I’m just sad that this will not come out for some time or ever now… What will this recession take from us next…
I do blame the company a bit, they should have dropped a Duke Nukem XBLA type game for a few MP’s to keep the company afloat… jus’ sayin’
It’s an extremely sad day in the industry. 3D Realms made a lot of great titles in the past. They shaped the importance of environmental interaction in games, and were one of the driving forces in the transition to 3D gaming. They created one of the most badass, yet likable characters in the genre.
what have they been doing all this time? i would love to see the alphas for what ever they did
I blame the iPhone. No reason, I just hate the iPhone. Well, I hate AT&T, but it’s the same thing, really.
It’s still in Development. :S 2k still owns all the rights to development and publishing, and does not effect the game at all.
“It is the Company’s policy to not comment on its contractual relationships, nor do we comment on rumors and speculation. That said, we can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title. In addition, Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever.” – Alan Lewis, Vice President of Corporate Communications & Public Affairs for Take-Two.”
@Flamov – QFT.
It’s really much more bizarre than that really…. http://gamingisstupid.com/2009/05/06/the-chair-story-revival/
Is any human on Earth remotely surprised by this?!?
It’s only 3Drealms that’s dead.
There’s no official word on the alive/dead state of DNF.
So it could be … undead …
Can we have an ‘Undead Duke’ as the next zombie, please?
Well when it takes you 10 years to work on 1 game – the money runs out eventually. Too bad 3d realms made good games a decade ago
Well. I actually had hope for it. The new Guns ‘n Roses album was being done for like, 17 years. When that released, alot of people were proven wrong.
Someone should just do a Duke Nukem total conversion for Half-life2 or Unreal Tourney
this is like some chick telling you shes gonna have sex with you and then she vanishes into thin air while laughing at you for bein so stupid and naive
DNF is a shorten “did not Finish”….. it was not ever ment to be.
I think I realized this was going to happen when I saw Fury3 was a licensed clone of Terminal Velocity. Microsoft money always changes things for the worse.
Don’t be fooled! It’s all a prank by 3Drealms! They are going to make a huge announcement and give out the release date any second now!
Yes they will… Yes they will! T-They won’t disappoint us … N-No they won’t…
SHUT UP SHUT UP!
ALWAYS BET ON DUKE
ALWAYS B-BET ON DUKE!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Duke? Duke?! Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuke?!?!

I was shocked by hearing the news. I lived my life beleving that one day, one day far in the future that game would come out…
Release the source code! One of the developers must be pissed enough to let it “leak”. Fans would pick it up and it would be finished within the year.
I would help!
Aw come on!!

3D Realms was not just working on DNF (if they were ever really working on it in the past few years) but they assisted other development houses on other games.
As far as I know they kept themselves busy but you can only bring in so much cash helping other studios without producing your own title.
Prey was the last game I recall them working on and that was released in I think 2006
@ LaVaGoD
oh.. then who was working on duck nuckem?
