I wonder if he can sentence you to death, that would Rock.

  2. squinky

    Yeah, thats a little different.

I guess he is still a judge, and they can detain you for contempt like nothing.

  3. intercollector

man, I think the funniest part is the way the girl is clapping at the end

  4. Molly

They are real judges and it is a real court although the people don’t actually have to pay the fines, they network does it.

  5. squinky

My understanding is that it isn’t a courtroom, it is considered “mediation”.

But Judges have far reaching authority, I could see it.

  6. Fett101

They my be or usually have been real judges but it’s not a real court and they are not official judges inside it, just mediators.

He was arrested for threatening someone, which you can be arrested for anywhere. If this was a real courtroom he would have been arrested for contempt of court probably the second time he cursed but Joe Brown had to wait for him to actually do something illegal before having him arrested.

    *armchair lawyering FTW*

  7. Darrell

It’s a fake arrest in a fake courtroom by a fake officer initiated by a fake judge upon a fake defendant.

  8. spencer

This is a real courtroom and he is a real judge.

  9. beerninja180

so who would win Judge Joe Brown or Judge Judy?

  10. Someoneyoudontknow

I don’t know who would win but I do know it would be a blood bath.

  11. JaFO

It’s fake ’cause real female cops don’t look that good ? ;)

btw : why were there no white people present ? I say that is racist ;)

  12. DoggySpew

I find court TV to be a mockery of the Judging system per se.
But then again, the US court system in general I find laughable and amaturistic.

  13. darkanders

They aren’t actual judges but they are legally appointed arbitrators. As such they have legal authority, that is why he threatened to take it to the DA.

  14. Nakoma

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit to find out that these shows are completely scripted. Not one bit.

  15. drewmeister

I find these judge so-and-so shows a mockery of the justice system, yet at the same time if they made a Judge Phoenix Wright show I’d be first to watch it.

  16. PurrNaK

The judges are real and do have authority. It is a real court case and it is a real small claims court. The porpose of the show is to get information out to the people too dumb or too lazy to look up ways to protect yourself in and from agreements.

Seriously the #1 thing they all say is write your agreements down and sign them. Then stick to the agreement. And don’t agree to something without reading it.

#2 don’t make stupid agreements. “I will lend you $20. You will pay me back $300 by the end of the week” Illegal agreements like this result in $20 pay back. Ways around it are to “I will buy your car from you for $20 Then I will sell it back to you at the end of the week for $300 after I’ve put some work into it.” Wash the car and check it for leaks and now you have added value to the car and get the full $300 back.

*Grin* this is how I lend people money now.

  17. JaFO

 … these shows are not for the information but the entertainment-value of seeing dumb people do stupid things.
Especially scenes like this are what attracts audiences.

It’s fun to laugh at stupid people.
It always was and it always will be.

  18. Darrell

The purpose of the the shows is to make money.

  19. GlennKM

I learn about the US legal system by watching Judge Joe Brown just like I learn about the US railway system by watching Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, learn about astronomy by watching Star Wars, and learn about cartography by watching the Miss Teen USA pageant. If you think this is an accurate representation of the legal system, then you have been skipping out on jury duty – and civics class.

For those of you who keep insisting that this is real court: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_Joe_Brown

“Judge Joe Brown cannot properly be referred to as small claims, contrary to the show’s setup. Like all television ‘Judge shows’, it is actually a form of binding arbitration. The producers maintain the pretense of a civil courtroom.”
