Meh, it’s fun to think about for those who like learning tech trivia.
That’s ALL it is, since they’re all random facts(? – would have to check sources to be sure they’re accurate) with no conclusion or anything connecting them. Even if there WAS a conclusion connecting such far-reaching information together, I suspect there wouldn’t be much we could do about it if we didn’t like that conclusion.
So you don’t like that all the tech jobs are going to places like China? What are you going to do, petition China to stop having any more children? I suppose you could do what has historically been done for America and move to China yourself, if you think you can get over the cultural/racial/political barriers of living there…
So yeah. Fun film to watch, but not a whole lot more then that.
So “broadband penetration” of an island with a smaller population than Salt Lake City, and a smaller land area than Rhode Island, should be relatively easy, particularly if it’s calculated by the percentage of the populace with access to broadband Internet. The whole island could be covered by a dozen Wimax antennae.
Nice find, Scott, if you were just looking for a way to waste time on useless, unsupported trivia.
Now what will happen if in 2013 the more-than-human-brain computer starts downloading music illegally with this superfast connection mentioned? Or if it finds out that trying to cling to a dying market hurts a human more than sharing culture? (Or maybe they managed to ban any Asimov literature from the net by then)
To answer the question: It means that we are accelerating the acceleration in which we humans are overtaking our own species. Heck, our bodies still are not *that* used to walking upright and not feeding of raw flesh and dry wheat and already we can predict when we are going to render ourselves useless…
[I just hope our successors are so nice and send a Cameron to finish me...]
Lol, worst part is, that was made late in 2007. I saw it during school last year. So imagine the current situations… And i disbelieve the notion of computers that can process better than a true human at full capacity. We are not able to create such a machine as the logic of making something smarter than you is illogical in and of itself. What im saying isnt to give up on this now, but to freakin prove me wrong.
I agree most of the “predictions” in this are stretching a bit, but children today know more about technology than most adults did 25 years ago. Can you even imagine an adult in 1984 attempting to use a Tivo or a digital camera, let alone navigate the Internet on “one of those computers”?
Come on.. that little illegal songs download?… … don’t thing so.. I would like to know where they got that statistic, maybe only us but world wide.. thats “turd”
hang on, so if it was possible to download your memories like in that 6th day movie, it would be possible to live for ever as one of these computers sounds more plausible than floating heads in a jar that sort of thing would have to only allowed for people who would actually continue to do something useful once it’s done. imagine still having Einstein still working on the great un-answered questions of the universe
It all means you don’t believe everything you read or watch on the Internet.
Oh and computing capability reasoning ability or emotion. That 2013 computer might be able to figure out pi to the billionth digit in 2 nanoseconds, but it doesn’t know what love is, hunger, or the that you aren’t supposed to fert in church, or that said fert is “stinky.” Heck, it wouldn’t ‘know’ to wonder or ponder why we were all in church anyway. Artificial sentience is like cloning. Sure, we probably could do it, but it doesn’t mean we have to (or should). The Roomba inventors might be making weapons for the Army now, but that doesn’t mean they have to make them fully autonomous. The Predator UAV is scary technology with a tweenager at the controls… I think Asimov did more for human contemplation of robotic sentience (and its pitfalls) than any scientist. Besides, Skynet is already in use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet_(satellites)
Wikipedia would mark that video as requiring supporting documentation.
Oh and the Bermuda is wired thing… Icesnake nailed it. You can find hundreds of jurisdictions of similar size and shape that have just as much broadband. Heck I live in a rural town of 1600 90 miles from a small city (Spokane, WA) and 400 from a larger metropolitan area (Everett-Seattle-Tacoma), yet anyone in town (which is about 0.8 mi^2) has access to 10MB DSL if they want it, and we get it without hurricanes or funny pants. Take that Bermuda!
The guy who came up with this presentation was the computer network guru at my highschool and he came out with this info more than 4 years ago.
The doubling effect is scary and is documented. My personal favorite statistic is that we create more storage capacity (HDD’s, flash memory, etc) every year than the sum of all memory created previous.
Yes, there are a couple of facts that are overblown, mainly the “half of what a technical person learned in their first year will be obsolete by their third”. This is more saying that growth is changing that quickly, but degrees aren’t built like that.
I just would like to put it out there that the song is fatboy slims “right here, right now” and other than the title the lyrics are “Waking up to find your love’s not real.” I am sad that he wasn’t credited… I think he puts out great music but if you cant deal with techno then i suppose hes not for you.
what you learned DOES become obsolete. that does not mean useless. all it means is that by the time you are done with the course, they have already recreated a more efficient and educational course.
“And did you know that 95% of all statistics are made up? Nice polished propoganda.”
There were NO conclusions in that video (and purposefully so) so it can’t be propaganda. It was a collection of interesting statistics finishing on a question. It’s not telling you what to think in any way, it’s just asking you to think.
If you saw something in that which you believe to be foreign propaganda then maybe you should think about where it came from. Reading a neutral statistic as threatening doesn’t bode well for your mental state.
“If it’s on the internet and uses lots of statistics, it’s probably true.”
“If it’s on the internet and is too polished, it’s probably wrong.”
Which of these sounds more plausible? Answer: neither. I have little doubt that most of the fact-based statistics in that video are accurate (they’re too easy to doublecheck if you have the time and desire, which I do not), but it’s the interpretation of those statistics that’s the problem. Half the folks on the web seem to be either uninformed or too lazy to do any fact-checking (I’m one of the lazy ones), and the other half are too cynical to believe anything that they haven’t fact-checked themselves… oh, and by the way, most of the time they don’t bother fact-checking either because it’s easier to just dismiss things than it is to take the time to verify them.
Does anyone who dismissed this video as propaganda really think technology isn’t accelerating at a breakneck pace and therefore couldn’t possibly create some of the predictions made?
Does anyone who views this video as fact really believe that we’re going to have computers that can outcompute the entire human race simultaneously in 40 years?
That video is an eye-opener. It doesn’t matter how acurate it really is – it is the tendency and the direction that information technology is moving. And some of that information is actually quite important. IT workers in Austria have huge problems getting raises because their knowledge and abilities will be outdated in 2-3 years by new students. It is quite valuable to know how important it is to pursue a lifelong learning! Just my two cents!
The computer will no way in hades surpass a human in 2013. The human brain is the single most complicated device the universe has ever shown us. A single cell was more complicated than the most advance super computer of ten years ago. To say that it would surpass the human brain is to ignore the fact we hardly know anything about the brain. We don’t even know if the brain IS a computer.
With a failing economy, essential resources starting to run out, we are reaching the peak of technology+civilization the videos predictions will not come to pass.
“we are reaching the peak of technology+civilization”
I’ve heard that before. We’ve been through economics depressions and our current resources are not our only options. I seriously don’t think this is a far as we will go.
It always cracks me up when blanket statements such as the a computer will exceed the human brain in computational capabilities. If the human brain were to be devoted solely to computational operations, no computer today or ten years from now would come even close to matching it’s abilities. Unfortunately, this cannot truly be tested, since the brain is not exactly a machine that could be told to only do one thing.
Nothing… oh wait was that an actual question?
“So, what does it all mean?”
Well, if there’s a computer coming soon smarter than the entire world population, brace yourself for the robot revolution.
42 off course.
I for one welcome our new supercomputer masters.

No citations for the “facts.” Think of this as “Trivial Pursuit for the Gullible.” Might be true, might not. Oh, and Bermuda having the highest broadband penetration? Bermuda has a population of 66,536 according to https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/print/bd.html – the rural small town where I live in the USA has a population around 20,000. The USA has a land surface area of 9,629,091 square km, versus 54 square km for Bermuda according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_outlying_territories_by_area

Hehe, LOL’D at 42 (The meaning of life). Interesting. Can’t wait for the smart PC of 2049.

Shut up your ignorance is showing

I’m glad I didn’t waste my time on a college degree. So useless. I feel so insignificant with all those numbers.
The predictions seem stretched, but a lot of technological predictions that were done in the past have actually happened.
I knew it was all a “Don’t download illegally” skit.
my brain hurts now, roll in the super computers to think for me!
Come on.. that little illegal songs download?… … don’t thing so.. I would like to know where they got that statistic, maybe only us but world wide.. thats “turd”
Is that song saying, “Hang up the fighting-Hug my rear”?
Wow, that was… the most annoying music I’ve heard in years. Interesting statistics, but annoying music.

Sounds like a lot of the information about computation came from Ray Kurzweil’s: Singularity is Near book…

Scientific America’s podcasts for source.
cool video, where do you find these kinds of things?

Nope, the answer is not 42. As you might know, the answer and the question can“t exist in the same universe.
The singularity is near
