I dont understand why speeches like these are even needed, the term race is never used were im from to describe human beings. As far as i know it only used in connection with animals over here on this side of the pond
Yeah. I do think the guilt trip put upon Caucasians is a bit much though. There was more ignorance than just white people; and much of that ignorance continues today on the grounds of religious beliefs, among others.
I guess my problem is I don’t see how fame gives you any more or less of an important voice in issues like this.
Of course it doesn’t give you a more important voice, but it makes it a whole lot easier to get people to listen to you.
1st, Edward Olmos is awsome. 2nd, fame gives you no more important voice than anyone else. It simply seems that way due to the false preconception that famous people are more important than the rest of us and the idealistic view with which we see them, especially those with fan bases that see the famous person as a specific character. Furthermore if famous people wish to speak on a topic they feel needs attention it can seem as though they have a more important voice than ‘Joe Everyman’ simply because they have a greater means through which to get themselves heard. I feel that soon this will all become moot and no longer be the case as the internet continues to expand and offer free reign to the opinions of all.

What determins race in biology ? Races are pretty much variations of one species. There is such a thing as a Caucasian race, a Congoid (formerly know as Negroid) race, a Capoid race, a Mongoloid Race and Australoid race. Named after the location where the races are most preminant. (Caucasus, Congo, Cape of Good Hope, Mongolia and Australia.
Difference between the races are almost all skin colour changes.
But that in itself is genetically a very little difference. True races are more separated, in terms of biology. Just look at dogs.
So the only real difference is just a slight fenotype difference. Not one race has a true advantage over another in humans, and the differences are negligible. Thus, there are no races. Just the human species.
So say we all.
Humans have always had the concept of race, even back to the days of the Egyptians. They did not call it “race” of course, but understood the meaning behind the word, if you get my point. Race defined as, “he categorization of humans into populations or groups on the basis of various sets of heritable characteristics. The most widely used human racial categories are based on salient traits (especially skin color, cranial or facial features and hair texture), and self-identification.” (Yeah I copy pasta’d that off Wiki.)
To those bringing up the “white guilt” issue, that is what you get at the U.N. so I’m not too surprised.
There’s more to “race” then color and human typing. In Medicine, some drugs have different affects on different people. Not because it’s a random selection but because of immune system design over generations.
As we get deeper and deeper into Genotyping we are going to be able to not only define the line between ‘races’ of man, but also change and muniputate it. I saw 10-15 years.
There’s already companies out there munipulating pre-born children’s gene’s so they can select blue eyes, blond hair, etc. etc.
10 years, it’s not going to be your color, or the slope of your brow or the way you look. It will be what the code says. Look it up… It is upon us now.
As for the while guy thing…. No one group is greater than another unless placed there but the whole. if you see white guys as better then you, then you are the one that put them there by simply looking at it that way. No person can place themselves in a position of power over another without that other allowing it.
Don’t get me wrong, I am a child of the internet, the void from which thought grows into many different things. I don’t see color or sex from where I sit. I simple hate everyone as does everyone else…. For this IS the Intertoobs.

We wouldn’t be having this conversation if we just used “breed” or “subspecies” like we do for all the other animals, and “the human species” instead of “human race”.

Fame doesn’t give you the right, but it gives you the megaphone. I agree with what he’s saying but if I say what he says, relatively speaking, nobody cares. In that video he got an entire room to care, because he was put in front of a microphone because he is famous. Fame is not the reason for being listened to, but it is a means.
White guys didn’t invent subduing cultures. They were just at the right place at the right time to be the most successful at it.
As for the races themselves . . . I understand completely what he is saying. One human of one race can be anything and is always human. Which is why racism is wrong, because it ignores uniqueness. But there are probabilities associated with inheritable traits. Most of these traits were defined be geographic region, since transportation limited mating, and then everyone in the region gradually became more and more alike. This is why people from Kenya are traditionally fantastic long distance runners, but people from West Africa dominate sprinting (strange how these are considered the same race, though, which leads to another point). First, there supposedly hasn’t been a “pure” racist in more than a 100,000 years. Most black Americans are some portion African and a significant other European, for instance. Next that races are very broadly defined, as the runner example showed.
But denying this exists does not help us. We have to acknowledge that people are different, but understand that everyone is unique, and race does not define them.

not trying to imply that wikipedia is all knowing but there’s a place to start. According to that article it is a question of crossbreeding vs inbreeding and recognizable characteristics that distinguish one group from another.

Myself and many others have far less power but we are constantly and quietly pushing the idea that judgement is spelled with an e in the middle. Firefox even just now highlighted it and I added it to the dictionary. WE SHALL PREVAIL.
He is culturally right but biologically wrong. For a long time I’ve been thinking exactly like him (and I still do it on a sociological ground) but science proved that there are some important differences into the human specie that are not only cosmetics, that’s how we evolved and we can’t deny it, what we have do deny is to give the right to some wacko to pretend that his group is superior to another.

edward james olmos is not just an actor but a HUUUGE human rights activist. those that know him well would probably think him as a political activist first, actor second.
he’s done some great stuff, and is definitely worth listening to.
in fact, i wish i had an opportunity to sit down and talk to him. the man is a vast ocean of knowledge.
but enough butt kissing.

True racism in America has largely disappeared among my generation, and it would probably disappear even more (I don’t believe it can be completely elimitated) were it not for a certain group of people in this country who have centered their entire livelihood around race and racism.
In America people just happened to choose race to alienate one another and justify their prejudices. Other countries and cultures might choose something else. In the middle east it’s religion and tribe. In China it’s regional. In Africa it’s tribal and political. It’s always something, and often it’s more than one thing.
The white/Caucasian racism guilt-trip is WAY overplayed. In Africa they’re slaughtering one another for belonging to a different tribe/ethnicity. In other parts of the world it’s bad too. American white/Caucasian racism is trivial in comparison.
Perhaps he prefers the word ‘breed?’ I celebrate the differences among people, whatever they are.
I mean come on labels suck is the gist of your argument, but I hear Olmos touting Latinos regularly, and guess what. Latino is a label too.
I won’t be guilted or talked down to because of what my German, Norwegian, or English ancestors might have done. I wasn’t there. I’ve never had slaves, never killed another person, nor have I cheated anyone out of their land.
Go lecture at the cemetery, where those people are. Maybe you are just batnuts enough to think they will hear you.

IMHO guilting one group of people for the sins of their ancestors is not helping anything, and if anything, it just drives a wedge.

Point is we demonize those we want to kill because it makes it easier to kill those who we think of as “them”. “Race” is just one permutation of that demonization. Nevermind that it furthers all the exclusionary tendencies of a class system.

but your existence (education, lifestyle, etc) is a direct result of your ancestors. my country was turned into a wasteland, the gold and other resources stolen and taken to fund the wars and other colonial efforts of your ancestors ambitions. i don’t blame you. in fact, i don’t think it is bad that your ancestors established a superiority for the education and well being of offspring. its natural instinct to do so. all animals do. but i think as humans, i think, these new generations should show a bit of compassion for the fact that their ancestors doings, and the suffering they caused for GENERATIONS to this day.
let me put it in perspective. what if i went to your house. killed most of your family. raped your sister. put you and your sister and children to live in the crappiest part of the house. some closet in the basement. i take all your stuff to increase my progress. hell, i even tell you you can speak your language, practice your religion and put you down all the time. i try to ‘assimilate you’ despite the fact that i will never really let you in. after a few generations, i might give you the right to vote. then my children do this to you and your children. etc etc. you are telling me that after a few generations, your children’s children have no right to be pissed off? in fact, their addictions, and self hate, and often criminal lifestyle is their own fault and have nothing to do with my children’s children as they live the high life. after all it wasn’t them that did it.
