I kinda thought that the podracer engine noise or the “Wonk” droid would be in there.
Oh well.
Those movies have some awsome sound and music though; that much is certain.
The bits where they talk about how they make/found the sounds for stuff is always my favorite in commentaries and interviews and whatnot.
And I swear, the brakes on the buses here make the exact same sound as the tank going over the cliff in The Last Crusade.
The list is great but I would have liked to have seen the Speeder Bike sounds from Ep 6. not the running sound but that start up and rev sounds was cool. also the echo it leaves in its wake. I remember wishing my BMX bike made that sound when I was a lad.
Trade out Wat Tambor for Podracers, & I’m all over it. Ben Burrt is the man. Artoo should have been #2. I personally wouldn’t have even thought of the tractor beam shut-off or the carbon freezing chamber, but they definitely belong on that list!

Other notable entries,
-Tie fighter blaster fire
-Speeder bike engines (noted above)
-Jawas (and Ewoks too)
-Land Speeder engine
-X-Wing fire
-Imperial Probe Droid
-Taun-tauns
-C-3PO motor noises (and all other droids)
Some source material,
-Lightsaber = old movie projector + back of an old tube tv + mic
-Tie Fighters = roar of a creature (I believe a walrus if I’m not mistaken)
-Laser blasts = taut metal wires tapped and mic’d up close
I don’t remember all the details, but I do seem to remember him mentioning in an interview that for the famous pod-racing scene in ep.1, Ben worked on mixing it alone in his home studio… for a week. The end result is nothing short of INCREDIBLE in a properly calibrated surround system.
I agree with most of these, but the newer sounds were just lazy reproductions of the originals, and lack the same organic quality. Nothing compares to the originals.
.
A couple of the creature voices seem cheesy. But given the comic book style, that’s ok.
Meant to post this before but got busy...the Ubi guy is a really nice guy. I'm excited to chat with him about the DRM issues.10:07:24 PM March 19, 2010from Tweetie
Yeah, who didn’t see #1 coming right at them?

Yeah, I’m gonna have to say that this list is dead on. Completely agree.
But where is the wookie noise?
Alex, my thoughts exactly! And the Tie Fighters should of been higher.
My only addition would have to be some of the pod racer engine sounds. Some classic sound effect work in Star Wars.
I love number 5 and 4…sounds in space
I remember loving the seismic charges the first time i heard them, and still love them to be honest
This list is pretty good – but a couple of changes:
Blasters are too high.
Vader & R2D2 too low – Must be 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Big Misses:
Wookie, Palpatine Laugh, Death Star Rev & Blast
But still enjoyable none-the-less. Lightsabers are the obvious winner, and deservedly so.

I was a bit surprise with the seismic charges, and I thought that was an aweseome sfx.
I’m sorry, but #1 should definitely have been the Ewok Yub Nub song from the end of ROTJ.
Also, I’m sad to say that I have had friends make the noise of the tractor beam being shut down and they say, “Guess what noise that was!”

What, no imperial probe droid?
WRONG.
10. Death Star tractor beam power-down
9. Doors hissing open and closed
8. Podracer engines (particularly Sebulba’s)
7. Landspeeder engines
6. Tie Fighter engines
5. Seismic charges
4. Chewbacca
3. R2-D2
2. Lightsabers
1. Vader’s breathing apparatus
Needs more Millennium Falcon hyperspace.
*nerdgasm*
oh and FYI everyone
Ben Burtt will work his magic on the next Star Trek!!
I’ll agree with the #1, although Tie Fighters and R2-D2 should have been right behind Vader in the count.
1/ Sabers
2/ Vader
3/ Tie Fighters
4/ R2-D2
I can’t believe stuff like the Mouse Droid and the Death Star’s Super Laser powering up right before destroying Alderaan. Those are classics for sure!
Great list still…
Does anyone know how they made the pod racer sound? And could you provide a link?
