Thought this would be fun to talk about. You have to figure that Skynet was based on some OS, however heavily tweaked to get where it got, but the basics are there. Thanks to Daniel for the poll idea. :)

How do you feel the summer movies have been so far?

I’d say windows, because it’s plain f****ing EVIL

  2. Fuzz

I always figured it was based on the Commodore 64.

  3. Stormspire

Probably not Linux ’cause of the year 2038 bug.

  4. Me

I say DOS because it went live in 1997 originally

  5. RaXha

A quote from some old crappy movie of the week sprang to mind! :)

    “It’s a Unix system!” :P

  6. infernoacid

    Unix, most logical choice :P

  7. disciple83

I would say Linux, but then of course nothing ever seems to go right with Linux, especially if you consider video driver failures…Can’t have a blind Terminator can we? OSX seems logical, they are always making hardware updates to match the software, and it’s always a closed system, and just when you think the newest version is available, another bastard shows up with more gadgets and crap that makes the “current” one look ridiculously outdated. But then, Windows seems logical as well based on T3′s method of corrupting operating systems by simply putting a twitchy finger on it and whispering a few naughty words.

  8. Jake

Obviously it’s how Steve Jobs takes over the world.

  9. Matt`

hmm… Linux is too non-evil to become SkyNet
Windows almost took over the world but is already in decline so I’m guessing not that either
OSX might just manage a happy middle ground – its source code is still closed off from prying eyes, and it hasn’t yet demonstrated itself to be full of fail (well.. not so publicly anyway)

Hear ye oh pretentious coffee-shop inhabitants and college goers, beware the coming OSpocalypse, repent now before it is too late!

“I’d say windows, because it’s plain f****ing EVIL”

    Exactly, lol

  11. Taellosse

I figure it’s got to be Linux or Unix. They’ve got the presence in large data centers, and the stability to manage a global evil empire. Microsoft has the requisite levels of evil, but Windows has too many bugs and security issues to do well as the nucleus of out evil robot overlords. And OSX doesn’t have the market penetration to be likely. DOS is just laughable–it’s too primitive at this point to be at all likely. Given that I don’t even know what BOB is (though I’m nowhere close to a computer uber-geek), I doubt it’s sufficiently popular to be even as likely as OSX, however well it runs.

  12. Taellosse

Oh, and RaXha, I’m pretty sure that quote is from Jurassic Park, when the girl is in the operations center and is trying to lock the doors. Example number 10,463 of Hollywood having little to no clue how computers actually work, though at least it wasn’t a whole movie predicated on those misapprehensions, like Hackers or The Net.

  13. Hoodoo

I know for sure it is not Windows. Yes, Windows is evil, but if SkyNet came from Windows, all I would need to take SkyNet down is a simple USB device. Plug it in and instant BSOD. Thanks Windows!

  14. AmarilloMike

anything apple and mac related… so OSX then lol – skynet an the terminators/robots etc are so… organised, logical – an osx is sooo much more logical than windows – ‘you will hurt us now, so we must kill you first’ – the logic in that is astounding! even if we don’t have time travel tech yet… as far as we know lol

  15. digisam

I agree, window, cos it is pure evil and quietly corrupts and destroys all things good in this worl

  16. Zero_Out

Windows, of course. What other OS would be so buggy as to allow sentient programs to exist? It’s only in bugs, holes, etc., where homicidal code comes to be.

  17. Mark Dell

    Bah! Workbench ftw

  18. Jeff S.

I should change my vote… It’s obviously running on OSX… even if skynet didn’t start that way it would surely have switch soon after becoming setient and snooty as hell. ” SKYNET : the ultimate elitist a-hole “

  19. teenk

Gotta be Windows. I mean what other OS would have a built in capacity to take over the world, never mind that’s already running the majority of the world’s networks.

  20. mario66

OSX- latte sipping mac assh*les. ;) T100 likes to sit in Starbucks

  21. LarryMcTroll

As always linux fanboys, who keep using windows 99% of the time.

  22. RevFry

Why, Sky OS of course! http://www.skyos.org =)

  23. peruchito

windows? if it was windows, the terminators would be crashing all the time. hell can vista even be installed on a T800? might need more RAM, perhaps incompatible AK47 drivers.

  24. WindupTurtle

It doesn’t actually have an OS; the programmers died before making one because everything sucks in the future.

The robots gained sentience after contact with a large black monolith.

  25. WindupTurtle

“windows? if it was windows, the terminators would be crashing all the time. hell can vista even be installed on a T800? might need more RAM, perhaps incompatible AK47 drivers.”

    Heh, good answer.

  26. Amadou

“And OSX doesn’t have the market penetration to be likely.”

Am I immature because I find this sentence to be tremendously funny?

  27. eugaet

It’s a custom Unix/Linux variant. The terminators are just physical manifestations of the following command:

    root@skynet> find . -iname “johnconnor” -exec rm -fv {} \;

  28. dude

    Bob, of course!

  29. cyan

Al Gore has yet to invent the Skynet OS.

  30. Jehuty

It cannot be Linux because from what I’ve been able to tell Viruses don’t infect it or OSX. That leaves unstable windows.. Well that sure as hell isn’t happening. For a system like what they have, it would of been custom coded by the military.

  31. Eric

Has to be Linux. Only in Linux can it happen that a hacker cuts himself off from his own system without a backdoor. You can always find a way to break in through Windows. (Ooh! Pun!)

    Sun is too expensive.

DOS freaks when faced with multitasking and doesn’t like to play with other systems/subsystems very well. Just ask GLaDOS.

OSX. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHA! Oh. You were serious? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :D

    Bob. That’s not even funny.

  32. Eric

@Jehuty: Skynet wasn’t infected with a virus. Watch the movies again.

  33. Richard

If Terminators were based on an Apple OS, they’d run their mouths quite a bit more.

  34. Robot Chicken

HAHA WINDOWS SUCKS GUYS IT WAS DEFINITELY WINDOWS BECAUSE ITS A BAD OS AND IT CRASHES A LOT WHY I MYSELF HAVE GOTTEN 0 CRASHES ON WINDOWS IN MY ENTIRE LIFE IT’S JUST THAT BAD

  35. Taimou

    FreeBSD

  36. Cory

OSX, user friendly my ass. Just luring us into a false sense of security if you ask me.

  37. Glader

Windows man, its got to be windows… its evil designed by the anti christ Bill Gates…

  38. Icesnake

    It’s Linux. think about it:
    1. It’s stable and scalable.
    2. It’s relatively secure.
    3. Source is freely available, so that as soon as adequate AI is available, it can modify itself.

If SkyNet ran on Windows, you could take it down by simply putting up two wireless access points on the same channel.

  39. Udabac

You know, I voted Unix because “It’s a Unix system”, but the more I think about it, the more I think the answer is… drumroll…. BASIC. Who would suspect it? It’s the perfect cover.

    RUN
    10 Terminate JohnConnor
    20 If JohnConnor = Dead goto 40
    30 goto 10
    40 Victory Dance

  40. darkness

must be windows LIVE (mainly because live|evil and windows keeps trying to correct itself… but also because windows doesn’t have any bugs… they’re new and undiscovered features!!

  41. Josh

I voted Windows, simply due to its natural and innate sense of malevolence towards humanity… it made sense.

  42. Pansa

    voted windoows..

    pro:
    -evil
    -paranoid
    -constantly rebooting

    con:
    windows and intelligent?

  43. Pansa

    grmlgrml
to add , i hope every programm for skynet is written in lolcode
    http://lolcode.com/specs/1.2

  44. nick

why is everyone bashing on windows, i have never had my windows xp crash. i don’t even know anyone whose windows has crashed more than 3 times, and i only know one person who has had windows crashed more than twice.

  45. Robot Chicken

Well obvious Nick Bill Gates is the anti-christ, I mean the man gives to charity. What a douchebag.

  46. Scott Fletcher

BeOS. Or maybe Apple System7. Possibly AmigaOS from Commodore International?

  47. Jehuty

    @eric

Skynet was activated and connected to the other military systems in order to take care of a virus that had been infecting them, it was then infected by the virus that it could not destroy and evolved you could say into a system that became self aware.

  48. Spencer

You know that Bob is not an OS right?

  49. Nianna

    Who cares?

We know that the only one capable of finish them is not J. Connor but Obsidian (since he has the ability to crush any OS) XD

  50. Dol

    Windows.

Since its the most evil of them
