Thought this would be fun to talk about. You have to figure that Skynet was based on some OS, however heavily tweaked to get where it got, but the basics are there. Thanks to Daniel for the poll idea.

Btw there is a Belgian company Belgacom that has Skynet as a product name for their internet services.
They use Windows and Unix. So maybe a miltiboot, so the OS used depends on the mode the machine is in. The internal struggle between good and evil within the machine, Windows vs a Unix based system, hell even apple osx is based on Unix so let the battle continue….
Could be windows, think about it. ‘Sky.NET’…..
Also the outdated T-800/101/850 ‘defeating’ the newer T-1000 and T-X models, makes the older model more reliable than the newer ones. Sound much like XP and Vista’s relationship?
Has to be Windows…Everything uses windows as it is nowadays…
@Jehuty: (spoiler)The so-called “virus” was actually Skynet infiltrating other systems after it had become self-aware. There never was any virus. It was always Skynet from the first symptoms. Skynet had already evolved, and it locked everyone out of all its internal systems from the inside and closed all doors.
i say windows but still scott, POWER TO THE MAC USERS! amen brotha….. O will soon be converted…..(*maniacal laughter for 12 mins*)
Skynet couldn’t use linux – the open source community fixes bugs too quickly and wouldn’t collectively write software that would end the world. We all know it couldn’t run windows… too unstable and heavy.
DOS isn’t sophisticated enough and development fell off a long time ago.
The only other option would be UNIX – a privately developed real time embedded light weight OS that can be adapted for many different platforms.
Plan 9 from Bell Labs. Nailed on.
What else would you run if you were going to take over the Earth?
It’s evil, so it must be Windows !
Although the suggestion from ThePriest is worth considering.
@ nick: No one can take you seriously, you’re only about 8 years old. Tell your Daddy Scott to give you back your Optimus Prime doll, and stop bothering the big people.
I agree with binaryspiral – Windows is too buggy and bloated, linux is way too closely monitored to go all psycho man-killer without there being a huge movement in the open source community toward the idea that humans should be destroyed, *BSD kinda faces the same problem as linux, OS X doesn’t have sophisticated enough programmers to make such a malevolent AI, on purpose or otherwise…
Yeah, it’s gotta be some variation of unix, created in secret by a cult of satanists or something.
And to disciple83: if you couldn’t get linux working in this day and age, with advanced distros like *buntu floating around, you either have an ATI video card, or you have a strong lack of computer-wisdom. Seriously, my grandma is running ubuntu, and she has proprietary video card drivers from nvidia working properly, her sound is perfect… I can’t think of anything that doesn’t work.
So, now that Linux is winning, lets try and guess what distribution it was forked from… I’m saying Debian because the idea of Terminators running apt-get cracks me up.
Windows isn’t unstable, you guys are just doing it wrong. I’ve never been BSoD’d.
Anyway, I’d have to say Windows XP, though heavily modified. It’s evil; (I can’t deny that, BSoD or not) and most everything uses it nowadays.
Linux, because Linux users (and open-source in general) annoy me to no end. Go capitalism!
Windows Vista – An application is attempting to access nuclear launch codes, cancel or allow?
OSX – Now with TIME MACHINE! (it’s fate I tell ya!)
Linux – Skybuntu?
Unix – People still use this? Well, maybe in the military.
Bob – You’ve entered the wrong launch codes 3 times, would you like to choose a new launch code?
DOS – You do not have sufficient memory to launch nuclear missiles.
Another thought – I seem to recall that the original terminator was running 6502 machine code, so whatever OS it’s running would have to be 6502 compatible.
GOD I’m a geek!
Skynet obviously comes from the Web. We all know the Internet is based in Linux. Now if we go by the Agent Smith theory of machine take-over, it is to protect us from ourselves. Linux will take over to protect the world from Mac and Windows.
Well Windows would explain the 120 second reboot…
Windows isn’t unstable, you guys are just doing it wrong. I’ve never been BSoD’d.
You just hacked your fault error page color to something else… don’t even start with me, I don’t BSOD either… mine is pink just to humiliate the computer when it dies on my desk.
Although after the last round of vista driver updates from Lenovo… it’s been pretty solid.
What about Google’s newly(-ish) acquired Android operating system.. sure it’s for phones now.. but think about it.. ANDROID…
picking windows b/c it is evil is way to easy. Skynet is far to advanced to be anything from Microsoft. If Skynet was run on windows all of the terminators would constantly crash and all resistance would have to do is install some adware or spyware and their whole network would come to a crashing halt.
