BUMP: We begin with me and the wife on the aniversary trip. Sebastian tells us all about his Amtguard stuff. I had never heard of this but all I can say is GEEK AHOY! We tackle the argument about why we westerners like our graphics realistic, and finally hammer some of your emails. We head out with Nick’s commentary of A New Hope, and another visit from Minister Ben. GREAT fun show! Thanks to Obsidian, Andrew, Brian, and special guest Sebastian! Oh, and Mike too.

Scott had never heard of LARPs?!
I want an orange cream smoothie.
An orangle cream slush?
An orange cleam smush?

Sebastian, do any of you guys get to shoot in medieval themed movies?
Dudes, why do you even talk about Stargate!? There was one good book and one good full motion video. Everything else about stargate sucks…
Hmm – I guess 42 is the universal answe to everything. LOL
42 of what?
Pure, the answer to your question is also 42.
42 of 42 of what!? Meditate and reach the answer out of this universe.
Do any of us get to shoot in medieval themed movies?
Movies? Nah, probably because it might actually be considered doing ‘work’. Anyway, we do this for fun, for some it’s more of a hobby.
Most of us are either overweight, or too skinny, or too ugly to be on the big screen. We hardly look like the stereotypical dipictions of warriors in movies.
Myself, I’m about 5’2″ and weigh about 100 pounds plus change. I’m pretty good with a foam shortsword or spear, but put a real steel longsword in my hands and I would be toast trying to swing it.
If anyone is curious as to how I look or fight, take a look at the Desert Moon (Reno) Promotional Video found in the media section of http://www.nevadaamtgard.com – I’m the guy in the Japanese gear.
Just a sidenote, Scott: 42 + 1 != 42
(Except for very small values of both, of course.
LOL!
…or a reprogrammed ‘+’ operator procedure.
Man that Minster dood was pretty darn smart!
We need to move the Ben segments to earlier in the show…
“Most of us are either overweight, or too skinny, or too ugly to be on the big screen.”
That’s why medieval movies are never really realistic, which actually pisses me off.
Actually, I think it is 42 + 2 = 42.
Lets see if Scooter here actually pays attention to his fanbase, or better yet, actually pays attention.
we do a swordfighting thing in my Hometown too. Its a small town in Kansas, and about 20 of us get together and play. We found out about the game from some college friends of ours. We don’t dress up like they do. We usually just head out to the park, and play capture the flag, or protect the base or something. I like our swords a lot better too. They look more realistic. Not to knock the adamdtat…gaurd… guys. Anyway check out http://www.dagorhir.com …neway..I enjoyed the show though!
Konraden: What the crap are you talking about?

Cory has a good point.
There’s a ton of different medieval combat organizations out there. Myself, I encourage these groups no matter the kind, whether it’s going to the local ren-faire or supporting another group.
With all the organizations that are available, finding the right one is like going to the ice cream shop and choosing the right flavor. If Amtgard isn’t your bag, there’s other things you can try. It’s even possible to start your own group (starting an Amtgard chapter is easy)
Here’s a list of other organiztions out there, with a brief explanation:
Think of it as a spectrum with realism on one end, and fantasy on the other.
On the left you’ll have SCA [www.sca.org], who focus on historical accuracy on medieval reinactment – their combat is fairly realistic, with rules requiring some form of working armor because you hit with rattan weapons (even your head is a legal target).
On the other end, you have NERO [www.nerolarp.com] which focus less on physical combat, and more on fantasy roleplay.
Now, somewhere in between the two, you have goups like Belegarth [www.belegarth.com], Dagorhir (www.dagorhir.com), and Amtgard [www.amtgard.com]. They are all similar in basic combat, but mainly what differs are the elements on the rules of play.
Amtgard is a little more unique among the others because it sits comfortably in the middle of the spectrum. Amtgard has a class (ie warriors, archers, wizards) and level system that grants you extra abilities based on your experience. As far as Amtgard chapters go, you find that they’ll lean to liking either full-class battlegames more or no-ability skirmish games more. Usually chapters will have a whole mix of different games throughout the day.
I’ve tried some of the other organizations in other areas over the past 11 years or so, but I prefer Amtgard a little better because of it’s availibilty throughout the country. The biggest plus for me is that Amtgard offers scenarios and battlefield situations that have not been done on a strategic and tactical level (A guy in 6pt plate armor isn’t the badass he thinks he is when a wizard is tossing fireballs. Or how a healer can turn the tides of war when he heals your army’s wounds).
If you want some advice, the best thing you want to do is find an organization in your area and join the one that suits your personal needs in a Medieval Combat Sport.
Thankyou for atriculating that in a way that I’m to lazy to do.
